Please give me opinions on my contractor's dealings (very long)
Comments (15)We are experiencing something similar. My husband retired from the military 18 months ago. We had enough equity from the sale of our last home to finance this build. The builder appeared to be very professional and claimed to be in good financial shape. The house was started last March, and still not completed. Due to the economy the builder started borrowing from Peter to pay Paul. He has a couple of unsold, unfinished spec houses as no one is buying at this time. (We suspect he used our first 3 draws to finance these 2 houses). Since July we've had to take over the payments to the subs, after we'd already paid him $140k plus! The subs show up only when they feel like it. The builder has not shown up since August, does not return phone calls or emails. The building supervisor, DH and myself are trying to get our house finished. It has been a painful, expensive experience. If your builder is avoiding you now, and hasn't been upfront with you, what will it be like once you start building? Your husband may like this builder but this is not the military where personal accountability is front and foremost! Have a good think about things, interview a couple of other builders, ask friends and acquaintances for references and take it from there. As nice as it would be to have a new home ready by July, I'd try hoping for the end of the year!...See MorePlease help me with my step child!
Comments (14)I am in a relationship with my boyfriend who has a 5 year old girl. She comes from a VERY privileged family who think they are above everyone else. When she can't have something she screams and gets what she wants. Recently my boyfriend has had the 2nd court case and alot more access to her and instead of 2 days of play he is having much more time with her and has given her discipline where needed but she screams and carries on until he backs down because he doesn't want to be the bad guy. As for me, I try not to discipline her because I want to create respect, but last night I broke when it felt like all my love and fun and kindness was thrown out the window when she said to her Dad in a fit of fury that she wanted him to get rid of me, this all stemmed from her not being able to sit in the front seat of the car. Once in the back, She kicked the back of my car seat and had a tantrum. My boyfriend disciplined her then took her back to her mother and they had a talk and she wants them back together, which is a normal thing, but my dilemma is HOW do I treat this child now. The daughter is learning bad traits such as racism and high class traits that are turning her into a spoilt brat. Should I just not give her any energy wether it is good or bad and just step back? I talked to my boyfriend about it today and he said to try that, but it is harder to give nothing than to give love and support and then on the other hand be emotionally effected when she turns her anger on me. I welcome any thoughts on this subject please. Thank you Megan...See Moremoving the kitchen? need some layout advice
Comments (23)Well, I don't know that this works perfectly, but it gets at least somewhat of everything you want. Perhaps that is enough? The family entrance to the home is in the side. Enter there, and you'll pass the 5' x 5' half bath (with a window!) and a closet and hooks on the back of the pantry and/or on the long stairwell wall. Not the most elaborate mudroom or half bath ever, but it's more than you have now. If you would like to trade traffic flow for a bigger closet, you could always close off the entrance to dining/kitchen areas from the mudroom. (If you're carrying groceries, you'd probably enter the house through the deck doors anyway.) Like this: In addition to the half bath and mudroom, this plan also gains you a big kitchen with an island that is not a corridor kitchen. Moreover, though you cannot see the entire living room from the island, you can see the entire dining room and about half of the living room: Note that, though the living room does not change in size, it has a new traffic pattern running into it from the new hallway. This will shift any natural living room furniture layouts to the right. Does that leave you enough room for a decent furniture layout?...See MoreHELP! Am I making an expensive exterior mistake?
Comments (12)Metro, in my area there are several designers who will work with you on an hourly basis. Two that I have used have a storefront, but do mainly custom work. I had a designer come to my house to evaluate and help me with paint color selections. For about $200, she helped me fine-tune selections for four rooms plus my front door paint. It really helped that she saw my home with my light, my brick and roof colors, etc. And she was spot on with her color recommendations, recognizing undertones that I hadn't considered. If you can find a designer like the one I used, it may be worth investing a bit to create a cohesive plan for your exterior....See Moresummersrhythm_z6a
