Hey, where will all your houseplants be going in the Fall?
Comments (28)Hey Mike..you always pick interesting topics. :) Jeff, love your LR. It's sooo big. Large windows, too. I thought you lived in an area where plants could be wintered outdoors??? Mary, nice room. Your Begonias are doing fantastic. Wish mine looked as nice. Started cleaning the front 'plant room' at 10am yesterday morning. Washed windows, in and out, walls, and a large shelf most of my succulents will be placed. A few other shelves, too. Watered every plant in that room that weren't outdoors this summer, and scrubbed floors..but will have to redo. Finshed at 7pm. Today, I plan on finishing the other half, then the back plant room. Since the majority of plants go in both rooms, they'll be ready when plants come inside. The LR will also be cleaned, after dh and ds remove the a/c from the window....yes, Mike, we finally got an a/c. lol. Smaller succulents go in the LR windows which face south. Afterwards, the bedroom needs cleaning..wash windows, relocate tables, and two shelves most Hoyas will go on. The upstairs bathroom window will also be cleaned..hanging Hoyas are placed on the curtain rod, lol. I also have a small green house which needs cleaning and additional stones on the ground...it's emply right now, so cleaning will be a breeze. Unless a spider moved in..then it's war!!! Large trees and Agaves go in the gh. Trees that no longer fit in the house. I can't believe we're discussing hauling plants in so soon. What's going on? In past years, my plants were outside as late as Oct/early Nov. But with nights dipping in the 40's, 'which is too early for Sept,' I guess bringing plants in before days and nights stay in the 20's is mandatory. The WC's predicted today, Tues the 25th, would be the last semi-warm, 78F day. I prayed we'd get a few more wks of, well, a little warmth. This morning, while watching the news, they said this week will be in the high 70's, 50's at night. Think my prayer was answered. Thank You. I'm now wondering if bringing plants in is too early. Does anyone leave certain plants outside until frosts, and if so, which plants? I normally leave Thanksgiving Cactus out until buds appear, and some Kalanchoes. What about Jades? Since cooler temps promote red coloring, what's the lowest temps Jades will survive w/o freezing? Charlie, wait until you adopt over 100 plants..lol. Here are pics of last winter's plant rooms. front plant room, south and west windows front plant room, north and west windows Kitchen window, facing north Bedroom Can't find last years pics bathroom pics or second kitchen window. lol. But, I'm sure you get the picture. Toni...See MoreHey Annie! You're a Double Blue Ribbon Winner!
Comments (16)Silvercook...there are plenty of recipes on this forum! Just do a search, on pickles, let's say and many links will come up. Many of us 'newbies' have learned a lot from the wisdom of these folks in addition to using certified, SAFE, recipes as well. We also have many that teach canning, involved in canning research, or are way advanced in the world of canning on this forum. You are in good hands! You can also do a search on the names of the foods that I won ribbons on. They are all here. We do use the BALL BLUE BOOK and the NCHFP, see link below. They even have an online class to learn about canning! I took a refresher class a few months back at the local cooperative extension as I had never worked with a pressure canner before, just boiling water bath. I'm sure KY has coop. extensions as well. Call your local extension and you can find out a LOT!! Welcome to Kentucky! I am in NC but was born in Lexington, KY and really miss it. And welcome to the Harvest Forum! I'd love to know where in KY you are. Click on my name, and you can send me an email. Good Luck and Happy Canning! Comments (11)Get dressed as soon as you get up and get out of the house for whatever reason! I find myself wanting to hibernate this time of year now that the holidays are over. At least 3 days a week, I meet my friends to run - we meet after dropping our kids off at school. But on the days that dh takes the kids, I find it very hard to get motivated. Only thing that saves me is if I don't let myself sit down after they are out the door (either putting on my exercise clothes as soon as I get out of bed and make myself go to the gym or immediately get started on whatever chore needs to be taken care of). Of course, here I sit on my computer while I should be finally taking my tree down LOL, however, I did run 5 miles this morning, got my car washed and went to the grocery store b/f coming home. I sat at my computer while eating my lunch, and now can't get motivated to do my tree.... Make a list before you go to bed of what you need to do. When you get up, get dressed/showered, so you are ready to go and then get started on the list. I find that when I take the time to make a list, it feels good each time I cross something off. I have a list for immediate tasks and long-term tasks. I do find there are days when I need to take a break and just hibernate though. I have four young kids so some days, I feel like I'm on the go the entire day and don't rest until they go to bed but by then I'm exhausted. So every once in a while, I do have a day that I don't feel guilty if I don't do a thing (that was Monday this week for me, though I did run 4 miles first, then came home and folded laundry while I watched Downton Abbey and The Good Wife since I fell asleep on them the night before!). But I felt extremely guilty as I had planned to take down our tree on Monday and here it is Wednesday and it's still here. Ugh!...See MoreHey CL shoppers! Odd ad wordage trends in your area? Comments (73)I found this one to be quite funny. This guy hopefully didn't quit his day job to become a salesman!! Really, really ugly coffee table - $5 (77065 Cy Fair) Okay, this coffee table is ugly. It's REALLY ugly. I can't even believe I'm trying to sell it, it's so ugly. But it's also VERY sturdy. You can sit on it without even worrying about it collapsing beneath you. It'd be really a great thing for someone who just needs SOMETHING to put a big TV on, who wants to bedazzle furniture, or who doesn't want to send the "good" old coffee table to college with her son. I mean, hey, we all need some utility furniture at one time or another, right? Maybe you even want it to refinish it and sell it for megabucks... I promise I won't judge you for buying it if you won't judge me for having it to sell in the first place! We will be home tonight (Sunday) between 6 and 8 if you want to come see it. If you can't come then, just drop me a line and let me know whenuld be a better time for you, and we'll work it out.Disclaimers: As is. Cash money only. No refunds.
