Hey Annie! You're a Double Blue Ribbon Winner!

Annie's Salsa which I made in August, won a Blue Ribbon, and went on to win another Blue Ribbon for the TOP PICKLED FOODS. It beat out the other salsas, chow-chow, pickles, cucumbers, pickled fruits, pickled veggies, etc. Isn't that wonderful?! Accolades Annie!!! A DEEP BOW to you! (I hope it's OK that I hold the ribbons for you...)

You may recall my post about it being the first time I ever worked with jalapenos as I burned my fingers by not using gloves.....this was my 2nd batch and I did use gloves (used a mix of lime juice and vinegar on this batch vs. all vinegar by the way).

My Caramelized Red Onion Relish won a Blue Ribbon in the Pickled Foods group as well!

I just made it on a whim, late this summer!

No winners for the Roasted Tomatoe Garlic Soup, the Chunky Basil Tomato Sauce or the Ba-Da Bing Cherry Jam.

I'm so surprised as it's my first time ever entering something like this. I just want to give a sincere thanks to all you good folks for your patience, guidance and wonderful recipes! You are ALL as much a part of this as I am. Without you it would not have been possible.

I agree with several others here that Geo Seeds may be the best source of flower seeds. Excellent selection and good prices. Yes, the catalog is simple and the seed packages do not have growing info, but that's OK if you are experienced. This past summer was one of the hottest in SW NH. The weather did affect some of the annuals, but we still have a very good year for cut flowers. We grow a lot and even if some varities fail we have enough back up. One problem we've been having is with tall Marigolds (Crackerjack, Lemon Mum, Jubilee). Normally they grow very well for us, but the past 2 years they have failed. We rotate crops, but even that didn't help. The annual Asters were not up to snuff, either, but the Snaps (Rocket, Madame Butterfly, Tall Deluxe, Brazilian Carnival, Snappy, Chantilly) did well, even with the hot weather. Rudbeckia Cherokee Sunset is always a winner, Blue Horizon Ageratum also. Anise Hyssop provided us with non-stop blue spikes of fragrant flowers. We grew Cramer's Amazon for the first time and it was HUGE with nice spikes of red flowers. Alas it didn't start blooming until mid-Sept. and by then the market was ready to close. I'll grow it again but in the border. We've tried a wide variety of sunflowers and have always had good success. This year we grew Golden Cheer, a large double sunflower. It was fantastic and sold out at the Farmer's Market. It was very productive and gave us bloom from mid-to-late summer. A definaite winner! We may concentrate more on the doubles (Giant Sungold, included). They hold up better and last longer. Scabiosa (Blue Cockade & Imperial) seemed to be affected by the heat but produced enough. The Zinnias (Benarys, Burpeeanna, Cactus, State Fair) seemed to take awhile to get going but once they did we had more than enough for our bouquets.

I'm not sure about the amount of canners and any increase in participants, but I do know the Cooperative Extension had to have two more canning classes this year, in the evenings, as all her classes got full and there was much more demand. The co-op lady is the one that pushes me to enter the fair. Originally, I wasn't going to do it this year. But I did, and I won again. I've got my eye on Linda Lou's SWEET APPLE RELISH for an entry for next year! I think the judges are intrigued by something new and different. Everyone on this forum deserves to play a part in those ribbons. I'm just bragging on you guys all the time. How you push to do it correctly and properly, keeping safety in mind, along with the hard work and joy from it. Cooking is an art, canning is a science. You've taught me that and I love the fact that you don't deviate from that. Canning is addictive and we are all duly warned when we wander into this site. Ribbons are just the 'icing on the cake' and reflect on your safe, great recipes! You deserve to be recognized. June Lynn

My advice would be if they aren't spreading enough then there is a bit too much flour. Try cutting down 1/4 cup and do a test cookie, if it's spreading too much then add a bit more flour until you get it how you like it. Betty Crocker cookbook has this tip in their old cookbook. I think most people are trying to figure it out when it's really just as simple as too much or not enough flour that affects the spread of the cookie. Try not to over-think it so much. EDIT TO ADD: The cookies in the picture look good though...they don't look like they didn't spread enough to me. Here's a thought too, why not use a round cookie scoop to form them and flatten them out a bit with the bottom or a glass or something? Happy birthday to our very own pioneer woman :-> And to think last night as I was dragging the ladder to the mango tree, I got such a kick out of the bunny eating a mango under my tree. Congratulations, June, I'm so happy for you. Well, for me too, LOL. However, you are the one that made the salsa, canned it, did all the work. Those blue ribbons certainly belong to you and you deserve them.

I'm glad I could help you out at all with that recipe.

Oh wow, you'll be at the same fair? Now THAT would be awesome.

If you are at different fairs, so much the better, then you could both take top prizes in your respective areas.

Congrats! It's great when you get blue!

I am getting frantic here with getting over 54 entries ready for our fair. I want in the Circle of Champions this year, lol.

Chunky type spagh sauce never seems to win here either and spagh sauce is a big entry, like strawberry and peach jam, gees everyone seems to enter those.

Busylizzy.....What constitute the "Circle of Champions"? Sounds impressive! My goodness, 54 entries! That's amazing! Let us know what the results are! When is your fair? And where?

Circle of Champions is a 1/2 moon display inside the front door of the Ag Building where the Giant Pumpkin is shown and other superior items from the Agriculture Department. It's tough to get there, only 7 or so make it out of 1,000's of entries.
Here is our 2nd place Scarecrow from 2007. Didn't enter last year or this year because I have so many others things I enter, actually 54 is smaller list cause I have company from London arriving Thursday so I had to scale back. I do preserved, plus displays, bread, veggies,fruits and flowers in the Hort building. No xmas wreaths this year either
Our big fair here, one of the largest on the East Coast is The Bloomsburg Fair, opening day is September 26 this year till October
3rd.

You Go Girl('s)! Great work! What a feeling! Just went to the Kentucky State Fair, I would love to enter my watermelon rine. That will have to wait for another time, but one day! I would love to try those recipes and any others you might like to share. I love to can, I haven't done it in years and I am trying to get back into it but all my recipes are gone so if I can get any recipes, hints and tips....I have just moved to Kentucky and don't know anybody that gets into this, so any body have any hints? Thank's so much ahead of time!

Silvercook...there are plenty of recipes on this forum! Just do a search, on pickles, let's say and many links will come up. Many of us 'newbies' have learned a lot from the wisdom of these folks in addition to using certified, SAFE, recipes as well. We also have many that teach canning, involved in canning research, or are way advanced in the world of canning on this forum. You are in good hands!
You can also do a search on the names of the foods that I won ribbons on. They are all here.

We do use the BALL BLUE BOOK and the NCHFP, see link below. They even have an online class to learn about canning! I took a refresher class a few months back at the local cooperative extension as I had never worked with a pressure canner before, just boiling water bath. I'm sure KY has coop. extensions as well. Call your local extension and you can find out a LOT!!

Junelynn: Firstly congratulations. I love the sight of those ribbins. I so badly want to enter a fair but believe it or not, the Calgary Stampede does not have food judging apart from cake decorating.

I was wondering - does the onion relish taste predominantly tart? I made it last night and don't think I carmelized the onions long enough.

Also, can the recipe be doubled or tripled?

I did DOUBLE the recipe, as you don't get much with just two onions. It's hard to tell when the onions are caramelized due to the brown sugar and the dark color, but I just let them cook down till they tasted decent-more than the time specified in the receipe. It is a little tart, but with a touch of sweetness in the background. To me, you don't taste the caramelization, just that hint of sweetness.
