Sod front, seed back - first few steps to maintain

Another new home owner, and first time lawn post. I've searched a few sources, jotted down some basic plans and products and due to the crazy weather, have a few questions before I begin. Crossed posted on a few places I gathered my research.

Zone: 5b (Chicago suburbs)

Lawn: 1/2 acre lot, 15,000 sq ft grass (10,000 seed in back, 5000 sod in front/sides)

Grass: Sunny grass mix: 50% of Kentucky Bluegrass, 30% turf-type perennial ryegrass and 20% fine fescue

Planted: October 2016

Goals: Year 1: Maintain sod and continue to help seed fill out. Future years: Soil samples and really dive into the hobby

Water: Expensive ($153/month) 2 people regular, every day usage in the winter

I've checked the gddtracker and my zip code is showing in the green starting today (3/7 - 3/12). The lows are in the teens over the weekend though. http://www.gddtracker.net/?model=7&offset=0&zip=60457

My main questions are sequence of events.

  • Since the sod and seed are new, is it safe to start with a pre-emergent application this week, or should it be skipped? (Scotts Turf Builder Halts Crabgrass Preventer with Lawn Food)
  • Should I be using any new grass starter food (Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food For New Grass)? If so, before or after the pre-emergent?
  • The seed is coming in patchy. Should I over seed in the back this spring, or wait until fall? If so, before or after the pre-emergent or new grass starter?
  • Lastly, it sounds like Milorganite is recommended going forward for fertilizer applications. Any suggestions on when to start this (maybe with over seed?), taking in all the points above.

Excited to dive into this new hobby!
