A wonderful subject! I remember the first time I suggested this idea to a client with a big front yard - they were shocked! But it really makes sense on so many levels. Having a variety of places in which to be home and outside makes it possible for the homeowner to choose the best location to relax at a particular time of day or year.

I have not yet tried cardboard to prevent weeds, see above, but routinely have used layers of black-white newspaper on top of grass to smother it in places I want to have flower beds. I lay the paper down, cover lapping edges, about five sheets thick. I then pile dirt on top if it and water it so that the water will ask through to the paper. I then dig holes to plant perennials. Add more dirt,if needed. Spread a two-inch deep layer of mulch, re-water it all and that!s it. Weeding is kept to an amazing minimum. This does not work well for self-seeding perennials. To add plants, just wet down and dig down through the paper. Every year or two check to see if you need to relayed the paper.
