9 Year old Live Oak Tree: Should it stay or go
Comments (18)zookeeper, that is not enough space (the circle of bricks)for a live oak. In the next 10 years it will probably outgrow that space and you will have more patio paver trouble. Which do You want, the patio as it is or the tree? Not sure exactly how close the tree is to your house, but if there is one oak tree that you could have close to your house it would be the live oak. It is very wind resistant and the wood from these trees was used to make Old Ironsides because of its physical properties. They usually survive huricanes very well. That said they also can die of a fungus depending on where your are at. Then you are faced with removing it. We have two 12" diameter ones at 24 ft. from house. Every other year I prune lower branches to direct them away from the house, other wise they would grow over the roof. Eventually the upper limbs may do the same, but we're not there yet. There are hundreds of houses in Waco built just as close to large live oaks as yours seems to be without too much obvious hassle, so it can be done. If it were me, and you need the shade, and tree is in open with no other competition for sun, I would leave just the middle fork so you can have a balanced tree, one that grows limbs out in all directions and doesn't lean toward the house. With every other year pruning you should be able to keep limbs off of the house without much hassle. These trees typically don't get over 45' tall unless they are in a lot of competition for sun. If you're from a drier part of the country where trees seldom exceed 35' you might leave all 3 forks....See MoreOak Wilt and Sudden Oak Death
Comments (5)I believe the trees in SE Mass are finally succumbing to years of successive defoliation (winter moth), which over time renders them vulnerable to any number of secondary infections. I drove down to Newport RI from Boston a month or so ago and noticed all these dead oaks dead or with wilting leaves and wondered if this was oak wilt. There was a Boston Globe article subsequent to that that indicated that this was the problem. Winter moth, which is worse than gypsy moth because the larvae get inside the bud of the leaf before it unfurls so that the leaves look like swiss cheese from the get go. We've been getting hit since 2003. It is rather disconcerting to see, however. princetonfan...See MoreSudden Oak Death in redwoods?
Comments (8)From what I know, it causes bits of die back but doesn't take out most trees. Might be whats killing so many madrone trees north of the bay area, though (they really look awful, lots of black spots on some trees and serious dieback on others). Man, Phytophthora is REALLY nasty. The whole genus. Killed the Irish ( phytophthora infestans). Killing the Wollemi Pine (phytophthora cinnamoni. Killing the oaks ( phytophthora ramorum . Little flagellate bastards. Only possible treatments seem to me to be ones that would have to be systemic and self-sustaining...i.e. bacteria or viruses that are engineered/bred to feed on zoospores or something of that nature. The way that a virus is thought to have made the chestnut blight weaker, etc. All the chemical spraying in the world won't do a thing to remedy this problem....See MoreI'm in mourning for the death of the trees
Comments (20)The trees were on her property, behind her fence, so probably not in the road setback area. My depth perception is not good, so I really can't judge. She had a licensed tree company doing it, so I don't know why they would do that unless they had a permit. I wish I had gotten the name of the company. It had a huge truck and had to come back three times to get all the debris. She tried to buddy up to me once, called me over to the fence and tried to get information on my ex-maintenance man and my manager, so maybe I could just ask her, tell her my friend needs some trees removed or something. I did find out that instead of planting more trees on her property, she can have one planted somewhere in the city, at a park or public place. I don't see any new trees going in, so maybe that's what she's doing. That's not part of the ordinance, but it's something the city allows you to do. I guess the ordinance just says you have to replace the tree with one they choose, but it doesn't say where you have to plant it. I don't understand people who go to that much expense to destroy nature, but then, I'm a literal tree hugger....See Moreonthebrinck
