Apple thinning question.
Comments (3)If those were my trees they'd carry some fruit. How many is the question. You seem pretty conservative about the number so I'd say go for it. I've found that if I thin to what seems about right and then take off every other fruit now I'm getting close. The fruit seems much thicker and heavier after it gets full size. And on a small tree it's as much about the weight as anything. The tree should easily support what's left at full size or it's too much....See MoreCattlepitters all over my apple trees!!! see pic!
Comments (6)I would have suggested Bt, except I think they're getting kind of large for that -- doesn't Bt work best on younger caterpillars? I believe that's what I've read. Oh, an FYI, and you'll probably think this is gross -- if you singe the hairs off of them with a propane torch (yeah, I know, kind of mean), then chickens will eat them. Cruel, but why waste a protein source?...See MoreOver-producing apple tree ?
Comments (1)You likely overpruned this tree, stimulating too much shoot growth. When this happens, there is a lot of new fruiting wood, and a lot of fruit is produced, often smaller and more numerous. This leads to broken and bent branches. You can reduce the number of these new sprouts, and reduce the length of the remaining ones. This will reduce the number of apples produced, and will make the remaining branches stronger. Also, by thinning the apples in their early growth, you can make larger apples. Pull one apple off of clumps of two or more apples. Good luck!...See Morepossible apple tree?
