I purchase Dave Austin's online from David Austin in Texas because I love these roses and find their price in the local nursery to be just too high.

On the other hand, I purchase Weeks roses locally from a nursery because they get in many good plants, a huge variety, and keep them full and healthy and because I like Weeks roses.

I have also ordered from a smaller nursery in California because they had "Rainbows End" mini roses I wanted and I could not find them anywhere else at the time.

So for me, I guess how or where I buy depends on who has the rose I want.

I have no problems buying stuff online, though Jackson & Perkins screwed up a bare-root order for me and I didn't find out until the roses bloomed proper the next summer.

The roses were tagged "Rio Samba", which I wanted, but I am going to guess they are really "Peace Hybrid Teas". I planted them next to existing Rio Sambas and when they came in I thought, something ain't right here. I should probably contact J&P and complain, but have yet to do so.

Sharon in addition to some mentioned I've ordered from Regans Nursery as they have a page of own root roses. I never new this before and was happy too find them. Then of course Northland but I like them best for the hardy roses that they carry. The same goes for Jung Seed as their bareroot own root roses do well here.

I purchase my roses all over the place, on line, Costco, HD and all the other big box stores, but I also do try to patronize all of my local nurseries too. I usually go there first and then if there is something in particular I want that they don't carry (mostly minis) I'll order. The big box stores are mostly fill ins of old favorites that most everyone carries. We've lost several good nurseries lately and I want to do my part to see that the rest stay in business!

I agree Seil. Now that I know that Cool Roses is around the corner, I go there for several of my roses. Plus it is nice to actually have them on Fortuiana. I don't mind driving to places like Pops either because I want to support them. Have you ever wanted something bad enough to order out of the country.

Patty, I never thought about purchasing (looking) at Jung seed. I know my father use to get alot of his gardening things from there.

Nicholas, I never even knew that David Austin had an online store in the US. I thought you had to get them from a place like Chamblees that carried Austins. Glad to know.

Our local nurseries cost too much, close to $30 per rose, I only purchased 6 roses from one nursery last year, I know we should support local business, but they're too pricy, and their roses are never on sale.

For bareroot roses: DA, Breck's, JP, Wayside Gardens, Palatine

Potted roses: Chamblees, ARE, High Country Roses, Edmunds

Rose bands: Burlington and LongAgoRoses.

Local rose hunting: Aldi's, Walmart, HD, Lowe's

I go all over: HoDep, Lowes, Osh, as well as local nurseries, both independents and local chains like Armstrong's or Green Arrow. I've also ordered from DA in Texas, ARE, Heirloom, RVR and Regan -- this year I'm trying Chamblees.

If you want old roses, i.e. teas, you basically have to go mail order.

One of my Regan buys was disappointing, but all the others have been problem-free. ARE in particular.

I order from a few different places according to the variety that I want.

My main source of roses comes from K&M Nursery. If I'm hunting for a rose not carried by K&M, I usually find it at Edmunds. For my own root mini/miniflora's, For Love Of Roses gets my first nod. If they don't have what I'm looking for I'll give Heirloom Roses my money. For own root large (OGR, Shrub, Ect.) roses I get 99% from Roses Unlimited. I also get some mini/minifloras from them. They sell good stuff.

I order my roses from all over the place. Palatine and Hortico in Canada... Used to order from Pickering in Canada, but they closed up the last couple of yrs, and for some reason couldn't sell to the US anymore. Edmund's, Regan's, Rogue Valley Roses, Roses Unlimited, Heirloom, Chamblee's, David Austin USA, Rosemania, Burlington Roses. I sometimes buy from Home Depot, Lowe's, WalMart, the local nursery, the Grocery Outlet, KMart.... Anywhere I happen to find a rose I'm interested in...

You mentioned LA ROSE OPTIMISTE and LET'S CELEBRATE. LRO came from Palatine last yr, and they dropped it this season. LC came from Pickering the last yr I ordered from them. But it was available some where else last yr... can't remember where tho.

I'm new to this, last year I had a bunch of disappointing Hybrid Teas from Lowes and Home Depot. This year I've mail ordered from Northland Rosarium, Chamblee's and Roses Unlimited.

I have purchased from Chamblees and have been quite successful. The roses that I get from Home Depot and Lowes, I consider 1 year roses. They are normally on Dr. Huey and they normally die with nematode problems. You probably do not have to worry about the nematodes where you live. However, For those in Florida, I noticed that Home Depot had some roses on Fortuiana root stock yesterday. The problem I have with Home Depot and Lowes is that their roses are not marked to what the varieties are. Any way modestgoddess, good luck with your roses and hope you enjoy the forum.

You know where I buy a lot of my roses from Sharon, lol. Pop's is my #1 source. I believe in purchasing local and also broadcasting for local suppliers when they have good prices. I know for a fact that Pop's doesn't make a lot of money off their roses but they truly love roses and believe in keeping their customers happy. A few blocks away from Pop's is Living Color and they never budge from their $25 price tag.

As you know, I also support local industry leaders, so I head for Cool Roses when I want something fairly specific. Their roses have always proven to be healthy for me and I love the idea of buying the rose from the same guy that grafted it.

If I'm in the Orlando area I go to Nelson's Rose farm directly (they're open to the public on Saturday mornings). They sell their roses for $20 when you pay cash. Just going there is an experience for me. It's my second Disney. Standing in their greenhouse with seemingly endless varieties as far as the eye can see is just a thrill for me.

In the event that I want something really specific, I order from K&M. I only purchase from him maybe once a year as ordering from him ends up costing over $30 a plant. Nothing beats getting that rare find that you've been drooling over. In my last order I got a Valencia, Brook's Red, Rosie O'Donnell, and Stephen's Big Purple. Given my experience, if you ever do purchase from K&M it is completely worth the price to pay for the two gallon roses. They pop back to life three times faster than the one gallon roses.

So those are my sources for roses on Fortuniana root stock. I used to purchase from http://www.orbans.com/roses when they had a larger selection of harder to find J&P roses on Fortuniana, but lately their selection has mirrored what you'd find with Nelson's or Cool Roses, so it's not worth the trip to the west coast.

For the disposable roses, aka own-root or those grafted on Dr. Huey, I purchase those on clearance from Lowes mainly. I never buy from Home Depot. They're price points are never aggressive enough for my taste and they destroy their unsold plants instead of discounting them which leads me to buy from Lowes. Also, I find it egregious to charge $10 for a rose without a name tag and $15 a rose with one. Walmart and Lowes both sell tagged roses at $10. When I've seen the roses on Fortuniana at Home Depot, they always have a clear name tag. Unfortunately, I find the selections offered on Fortuniana to be rather predictable and uninspired. They do, however, only charge $20 for Fortuniana rootstocked roses.

Last year I did order from Breck's and I also tried out the Aldi roses just to see if I can get them to grow. Happily, my skill set has improved greatly over the years and I was able to keep most of what I bought alive (now I have the onerous problem of trying to get rid of these successes given my ever overcrowded yard, lol).

Forgive my lack of brevity, but I've been percolating my response to this thread ever since you first published it.

I just sent in my 1st rose order to Hortico in Canada. I will go there to pick them up in the spring and pay in Canadian $! :-) The local nurseries are too pricy, $30+ a rose, I am heading west to Canada now for roses, Palatine is another great nursery over there I will be visiting and picking up rose orders this spring. Go Canada! :-)

I usually order from Rose Unlimited and Heirloom Roses. I have never gotten a bad rose from either one. I just ordererd ALCHEMIST from Heirloom in a 1 gallon pot! That makes me happy... I don't have to send a check in the mail to get a wonderful rose, I just called and told them to ship it in May and payed by credit card. Excellent!

Oh, and I forgot... High Country Roses are excellent, too!

Where ever I find them! LOL. Mail order I like Palantine and Rogue Valley. I have bought from K&M and Cool Roses and Rose Petals. I have been going to the Rose Meetings in Florida and South Georgia and they usually show up there so I don't have to pay shipping. I also buy at Home Depot, supermarkets, where ever I see something I want.
