The 20 Most Popular Bedrooms of 2015
Whether expansive and luxe or tight and cozy, Houzzers’ favorites are places where we’d fall asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillows
The most popular bedrooms on Houzz varied greatly in style and size in 2015, but they all have one common thread — each one is an inviting place where we wish we could snuggle up and fall asleep. Again and again, designers talked of clients who wanted their master bedrooms to serve as relaxing retreats. However, size didn’t matter. Snug bedrooms were just as beloved as large master suites. Homeowners also sought smart storage strategies for rooms lacking closet space and for ways to make their guest rooms work harder. Here’s a look at what Houzzers were searching for when adding their favorite bedrooms to their ideabooks.
Statement headboards. Tall headboards, particularly tufted upholstered ones, were highly searched on Houzz this year. They establish the bed as the focal point and increase its presence. They also lend themselves to pleasing symmetry in the bedroom.
Also worth noting in this room are smart nightstands complete with lower shelves for books and drawers for stashing flashlights and other bedside needs. The way everything came together had over 66,000 Houzzers adding this room to their ideabooks.

Architectural ceiling details. Since the bedroom is the one place where people are on their backs and looking straight up, it’s where architectural ceilings are most appreciated. Wood trusses bring a cozy touch to this farmhouse-inspired bedroom. And who could resist the giant cables on that blanket?

Eye-catching overhead lighting. High and architectural ceilings call for statement light fixtures, another popular bedroom accent. Many Houzzers noted how much they liked this chandelier as they added this photo to their ideabooks — it’s the romantic icing on the cake for this bedroom designed by Suzanne Connor of Casatopia, LLC. The elegant fixture contrasts nicely with the bedroom’s exposed structure and planks, which provide interest and texture overhead.

Tucked-in bed nooks. Not all the most popular bedrooms had soaring ceilings. Cozy alcoves and small bedrooms were also beloved.
One Houzz user commented, “Now that’s how a bed nook should look. Perfect.” I think that sums it up well. Note the space-saving shelves over the bed in this sweet bedroom.

Roman shades. Another popular bedroom element in 2015, Roman shades are a good opportunity to add softness, color and pattern to a room. This bedroom also has mirrored nightstand chests, another trendy accessory in 2015.

Sheer window treatments. A favorite for dressing bedroom windows, sheers add an ethereal touch. They’re part of the peacefulness and simplicity that attracted Houzz users to this room. The luxe textures in sumptuous colors made thousands of us want to dive right into this bed.
Spots for reading and relaxing. For many busy parents, the bedroom is their one true retreat. Houzzers took to master bedrooms with reading nooks and window seats, that extra spot to unwind besides the bed.

Farmhouse style. Plaid bedding, wood accents, a four-poster bed and the exposed ceiling structure give this master bedroom the homey feeling of farmhouse — another sought-after bedroom look.

Antique metal bed frames. Some things never go out of style. This metal frame is paired with floral bedding, another desired item in 2015. In fact, this bedroom is in the same home as the previous photo, making it the house with the year’s most popular pair of bedrooms.

Built-ins. One Houzzer summed up this room just right, noting “good storage, cozy, good for kids” for her ideabook, while another wrote, “great ceiling!” This bedroom combines many coveted bedroom features, including built-ins and the feeling of a sleeping porch. Houzzers were on the hunt for stylish built-in dressers, cabinets, armoires, bookshelves and under-the-bed storage.
Smart storage. Built-in armoires flanking the bed sub for a closet in this sweet guest cottage. There’s no need for nightstands with a shelf above the built-in headboard and wall-mounted reading lights.

Bunk beds. Stacked beds can be the ultimate built-ins, allowing bedrooms to accommodate more people. Houzzers loved this example, the most popular bunk room of 2015, as an inspiration for shared bedrooms for their kids and grandkids. Under-the-bed storage and a staircase with built-in drawers maximize every each.
Hardworking, multifunctional guest rooms. Nothing takes built-in bedroom storage to the extreme like a bed that folds right out of the wall …
… This was the most popular Murphy bed of 2015. Even the nightstand shelves pull out from the reclaimed barn wood wall.

Colorful quilts. Although calm sage greens, rich grays and pastels were popular bedroom color choices, don’t count out exuberant hues. Bohemian and country styles were also in demand. These two curtained beds in a B&B have vibrant mismatched quilts.

Fireplaces. Nothing’s more romantic than a crackling fire in the bedroom, and it’s common item on our dream bedroom wish lists. In addition to the sculptural fireplace, this room’s vaulted wood ceiling, cushy sofa tucked into the window, walls upholstered in plaid fabric, soft window treatments, and white and gray bedding had thousands of Houzzers adding it to their ideabooks.
Modern cabin fever. Houzzers loved the careful balance of rustic and modern in well-designed bedrooms. In this room, a gray wood accent wall, playful cruelty-free trophies, wood platform beds, cozy neutral bedding and a hanging chair won it many fans.

A little bit of this and a lot of that. Over 65,000 Houzzers added this room to their ideabooks. Knowing what we learned from the other popular bedrooms, it’s easy to see why.
The reclaimed wood headboard is so tall, it becomes an accent wall. Suspended lights free up nightstand real estate. A pleasing symmetry gives the room balance, and the bedding is neutral but full of interesting textures. Window treatments bring in pattern. Also, this room has DIY spirit, and those with such skills felt as though they could recreate the look themselves. What’s more inspiring than that?
