There was one company out there who also charged just $25 for a consultation, but it was the same, general overview, nothing specific - that would cost a whole lot "extra." Now, if they thought you might actually go through with a plan, they'd draw it all up for you for a $500 fee, applicable to their work, should you decide to go with the plan in its entirety at mega-bucks...all of this is very, very similar to what you encountered. I always thought the $500 fee was to weed out those who just wanted a few ideas and would then go DIY. Also, in metro-MD/DC, ANY company spends a huge amount of time on the road going from place to place, as the traffic is horrendous. Now that we're in a smaller city in TX, there was 1 company in town who had the same $500 consultation fee if I wanted anything specific or drawn up. And...they were booked at least 8 weeks out to even get the consultation. We ended up finding a much more accomodating company who saw us the very next week, drew up plans for less than $100 and gave us the option of DIY with their whole-hearted support, or they could also do the full installation (landscape only, no sprinklers) for a reasonable amount, IMO. I'm with kurtv, get the plans to your liking for the $500 and then re-evaluate....See MoreSpeaking of True Stories of Awful Moms
Comments (12)well I don't think she is a victim. I don't even mind if somebody wants to sleep wiht everyone, i really don't care, i also think it is perfectly fine to go on dates all the time, i just do not think it is OK to bring them to your house when there are children involved. Children of any age. I think if you just end a relationship that your child knew about, going on dates right away and bringing home another man within a month is not OK. Victims don't necessarilly bring every men home and let them sleep there with children next door. What for? No i do not think she is being a victim. she is on a very aggressive search for a guy to settle with. When the guy she is with is on a business trip she goes back to online search and goes out and if she thinks that her son does not know, he does. i asked her if she feels comfortable going on a date while being involved with someone else, she said she wants to settle so she won't be losing time and sitting around. does not sound like a victim. When DD still lived at home I had hard time explaining to this lady why i take my time to bring anyone home. She thought since DD is not 5-years-old it should be OK. Not in my books....See MoreAnother Story (It's True)

I learned to drive at 17, in CA and on a trip to AZ to see my grandparents, my Dad asked me to drive (night time due to the heat in the desert --no problem, but at 1:30 AM I fell asleep ---thankfully, I wasn't going fast and My dad woke up fast. I went bump, bump off the road into the desert. That ended my driving until we got back home and my Dad paid for driving lessons. Night driving still bothers me, but at least at 82 I am still able to drive Keep up the stories PS, this was a stick shift and we made all our kids learn on a stick shift --not happy, but because of it, 2 of the kids got good jobs--both in driving trucks years ago....See MoreChristmas Family Drama

If I were you, I would attend a holiday gathering at your Mom's house, with your sister and nephew and brother and whomever. I would try not to judge how your Mother or sister choose to deal with your brother -- they are struggling too. But I would hate to see this person (who has already caused so much destruction) damage your relationship with your Mom and sister. So I would not host him, but I would not shun a party he attends. I also would not force DH or anyone else to attend. I would go and try to make the best of it, try not to make it about him. You can't control and your are not responsible for your brother's drinking. He could "go to a bar get drunk then drive home and kill someone" any day of the week. It doesn't really relate to the holiday. You should still stick to your guns about blocking his number, etc., and you should. One, to protect your happiness. Two, because the kind of help he is seeking from your isn't what he really needs. He needs to decide to be sober and only then should you help --- if you want. Again, you are totally justified in handling it the way you want. I am just trying to think through what approach might make the most people the happiest in the end - including you....See More- 10 years agolast modified: 10 years ago
