Designs for Living: Every Room Tells a Story
8 Rooms, 8 Little Stories. What Tale Does Your Interior Tell?
For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated by the art of storytelling. As I listened to personal accounts of events, my imagination would build the setting where the story took place. Our homes also tell a story. With the exterior of the house as the cover, you can guess at the tale that lies on the inside. You can't judge a book by its cover, but once you open it and begin to read—much like entering a room—a story unfolds. In this ideabook, each room accompanies a likely, yet fictitious, story. Imagine yourself as the main character as I tell a story of what took place within your four walls:
After becoming the youngest person to hold an executive position at your firm, you decided you wanted your place to reflect your new status. Your instruction to the interior designer was to create a space that was mature, yet revealed your playful side. She totally nailed it.
Because of your love of books, you created a formal library in your home. Secretly, you believe this is why you are the parent of a world-renowned journalist, a heart surgeon, and a high-powered attorney.
With some reservation, you made a promise to allow your tween-age daughter to choose a paint color in the house. Of course she chose lime green, and surprisingly you loved it, too.
Decorating was never your forte, but after attending a flower arranging class at your local florist's you can't get enough of decorating with fresh blooms. Just the other night, you crafted a beautiful centerpiece using your team's trophy cup.
Your well organized kitchen got your through the hectic mornings of getting everyone fed and out the door to work and school. You cabinetry and floors took a pounding, but they are still beautiful and stood the test of time.
The first weekend after your basement renovation was completed you thought the people would never stop coming. Could it have been the pool table that kept everyone entertained for hours on end? Even the guests who didn't play pool enjoyed sitting in the surrounding nooks having lively conversations.
You often recount the memories of how a successful empire started within the confines of your modest home. In lieu of costly office space, your staff reported to your living room for business meetings and brainstorming sessions. Wow, you can't believe how far you've come.
These wall would speak of the blood, sweat and tears that went into restoring an enchanting craftsman. With great pride you share the story with anyone who will listen of how your family and friends came together to help you make your dream home a reality.
