Comments (5)Not sure what colors or uses you're looking for...? I've grown Della Balfour (aka Royal Pageant) (7 years) and Compassion (9 years) no spray. I grow both as freestanding shrubs...DB is much bigger but seems more amenable to training to a support (wall/trellis/pergola etc.) Compassion is almost more like a giant vase shaped shrub rose or HT for me. While not a generous bloomer, Jude the Obscure has one of the most fantastic (grapefruity) fragrances. I grow it as a big (6-7') shrub (and that is with generous pruning after 1st big flush to keep it in bounds!), but you could let it grow to its heart content and train it to a support. (I think it'd be a good candidate for pegging, but haven't tried it.) Mrs Herbert Stevens is clean as a whistle here- the climber should be too-and her nodding blooms would be gorgeous as a climber. (Lady Hillingdon is another possibility in that department.) A neighbor's Royal Sunset is a showstopper (I don't believe she sprays.) Westerland should do well for you, too. (You probably know Autumn Sunset is a sport of Westerland?) A few possibilities to look into anyway :)...See MoreNiphetos or Mrs Herbert Stevens?
Comments (2)'Niphetos' is a parent of 'Mrs. Herbert Stevens' which is why the two cultivars appear somewhat similar as young plants. I haven't heard that the two cultivars have been mixed up in commerce within the state of California, vintagegardens.com sells both cultivars, one is a Tea, and the other an H.T.. - anyhoo, if the plants are larger than band size, and have mature foliage, I suggest you take one mature leaf from 'Mrs. Herbert Stevens', label it, and take a mature leaf from 'Niphetos' I would tape them onto paper and label the backs of each, then write down the differences between the thickness of the leaflets, color, edges of each leaflet. 'Mrs. Herbert Stevens' leaflet should have a thicker substance, inherited from its' H.P. parent, 'Frau Karl Drushki', and be of a different hue of green. - If they both bloom at the same time, smell a blossom from each plant and see if they differ. The fragrance of 'Mrs. Herbert Stevens' has a hint of citrus to my nose. Of all the first generation H.T.s 'Mrs Herbert Stevens' i.m.v.h.o. shows the most Tea influence, however when the two cultivars reach a height of two feet and more it should be easier to distinguish between them, because of the twiggy growth habit of 'Niphetos' Hope this helps some, Luxrosa...See MoreOMG, I got a place for a climber!
Comments (36)Climbing Madame Caroline Testout is simply covered with buds for me right now, with one rose open and gorgeous. I have it planted in an all white garden, its pink being the only note of color. I'll bet it blooms for you in a year or two. Mine took several years to take off for me. If not, think of moving it to the warmest spot of your garden, ideally against a wall. I think roses of that background enjoy heat. I have always wanted Mrs Herbert Stevens but somehow it has never come my way. Oh, I just observed that this is an old thread. Somehow I was not looking at the dates....See MoreCl. Mrs Herbert Stevens - Does it 'speak' to your nose?
Comments (8)Now you tell me if this is normal. Today it was a very chilly, wet and extremely windy day. I came back early from work and just as I was passing by it I thought to try to smell the rose again (not hoping I would smell anything in this kind of weather). And there it was. A noticeable scent of the kind that Camps described. Not strong but much more than faint. Was it, strangely enough, the weather? Was it the fact that the particular bloom had opened fully? I can't tell since it was too windy to stay outside and try smelling more blooms but the scent was much more noticeable than the other day. Which goes to show.... I'm sure it shows something but I'm not sure what!...See Morenikthegreek
