That said I got plenty of spaces for moderns, running out of room for the OGR's that take up twice the space!

I have Alchemist coming in the spring, hopefully. I have ordered it every year from pickering and never have recieved it for the last 3, so I ordered it the day pickering opened up orders this year.. If I dont get it this year, Im going to scream !

Albertine is beautiful but doesn't it bloom for only approximately three weeks? This rose may not be available in Europe, but I've heard fabulous things about Viking Queen, a gorgeous pink rose for cooler climates that does repeat. I've also heard good things about Snow Goose, and it is also remontant.

Okay, I will go entirely outside your list and propose 'William Lobb', a purple tall Moss. I have this rose, and along with being beautiful and fragrant it grows well everywhere, in sun or shade, poor soil, drought, wind, clay. I had it in Washington as well, and it also did well there. I don't know about black spot susceptibility, though. If it does well in your area it should get tall enough for your fence. Amongst its many virtues 'William Lobb' roots easily from cuttings. It's a great rose.
P.S. I just went over to Helpmefind to see what they had to say about WL, and there are some comments that it's susceptible to mildew. I'll just say that in my garden this is not the case, and Heaven knows we have mildew in abundance. It may depend on climate and local environment.

Melissa, I have William Lobb, I have no idea about him being susceptible for BS or mildew, healthy as a horse here. How big does he gets for you? I dully planted him considering listed size of 1.5 m. but now looking at HMF size he might be a biggie even here. o.O Also does he need support?

Ingrid, 3 weeks actually is rather good here, especially for non focal point. Viking Queen is tricky to get here in Europe, but I think I also would like something tad bit less modern looking, as there are many pink moderns that can compete.

Silverkelt - that's pretty bad luck! Luckily here about every nursery carries him, but I had similar experience trying to get Cramoisi Superior bush - few carry it and at those it is sold out (although now fingers crossed for Beales).

I can say that my William Lobb has devoured a 9 ft rebar teepee. It is naked from the ground to about the top third where there are leaves. It's very gangly, and I am growing other roses and clematis with it to provide leaves on the lower 2/3. It is beautiful when it is blooming.

Hm, 9ft is not good for where he is atm, but that just might solve my dilema what to put in between 2 high bushes from the parking lot. \0/ Gangliness there won't be a problem, as the hedge would hide his shanks, but I wonder if he will need heavy support, as it can be drafty there in winter. :/

Silverkelt, if you end up not getting Alchemist from Pickering, Palatine also carries it (and so far, it's still available). If I had a spot to put it, that's one I would order in a heartbeat...

glad you are looking at wichuranas- with much excitement, i have leontine gervaise coming for my unsightly chainlink fence at back of allotment. Another gervaise i love - auguste, also aviator bleriot (although i got goldfinch, in a choice between the two yellows.
Fully in agreement about 2nd flush. for some years now, the vaunted second flush has been practically nonexistant - worst offender being New Dawn which, despite numerous pruning and feeding regimes (including total neglect) has generally only ever had one good flush.
Snowgoose - well, i vacillate over this rose. I had it in a pot for three years before getting round to planting it at which point it went insane and devoured a shed. No thorns, but not much structure apart from wild arching branches. I kinda like it because it blocks the path between the busy end of the allotment and the slackers (my) end. It also deters the annual blackberry thieves from stripping my bushes so I don't mind having to scramble underneath the canes and squeeze through the arch to get to my plot. It flowers for months, up to Xmas with a tremendous June show/ Smells nice too but not so easy to train or prune into submission. More of a huge bush than small rambler.Very long panicles of blooms. rather like a floppy delphinium. Totally healthy.

I have New Dawn, Fraulein Octavia Hesse and Paul Noel (later forgot to grow this year) and I quite like them, even New Dawn did very nice for me this spring, just later she had some foliage issues (first time I ever saw her get that). I wish that Miss Helyett was easy available, or Elisa Robichon, or Louis Rödiger, but it looks like they are available only from Loubert in France and I do not feel like trying to order more roses from the sites in the language I do not understand with no obvious CCard Insert There button. x)

I was looking at Primavere though, since I could probably add her to my existing order and she seems to be a smaller one - though I am not entirely sure if I want to go yellow there. There also is Lavender Lassie and Violette, which might be nice as well. :/

My 'William Lobb' makes canes about 2m long, which I prune back to about 4'-5'/1,2m-1,5m, keeping it as a shrub. Grown this way it doesn't need support. Take note that this rose, my original, is growing in very heavy soil and full sun and wind, with no summer water, and is one of the best performing roses in a difficult site, along with the Foetidas and Alba 'Blanche de Belgique'. I don't doubt it would get considerably larger in less hostile conditions, but it has grown and flowered well in this spot since I first planted it back in 2006.

That's good to know Melissa, I think I might try to grow him as a tall shrub. I might have a bit more friendly conditions, but then again I also got shorter growing season, so I doubt that he would make it over 2 meters here, especially if somewhat pruned.

Ah yes, I remember the blog post with rambler fence. Wichuranas are quite cooperative with the fence thing, my Fraulein Octavia Hesse and Paul Noel grow on a fence and are really easy to train so far (when Spectabilis tends to get out of its ties SOMEHOW and plop on the ground...).

Elemire, interesting that you're looking at Barbier ramblers. His list of roses always amazes me. In that I have stuck with his tea/noisette hybrids my choices probably wouldn't be yours, but they're all beautiful. I have one, Francois Juranville, in his first year for me. Even though he's a once-bloomer I got him because of reported health (which has proven true here) and rebloom in Florida to cover a rebar arbor that was empty. No flowers yet (well, OK, one), but he's way beyond the end of the 8' wide arbor, and I've stuck him up in the oak trees. I can't wait!! I've almost bought Paul Transon a few times.

Hehe I do not mind wichurana canes that much, they are at least flexible and quite cooperative. The only rose that I do not particularly love to tie is Paul's Himalayan Musk, I swear that first 3 meters he grows them in stealth, just to appear as a waving monstrosity later on, usually the different direction that I want him to grow. :D

Francois Juranville - got this for a customer to go on a pergola we built....so naturally, I have a couple of nice healthy cuttings. Lots of petals for you, Sherry, which I know you consider to be a must-have attribute. Violette is a lovely rose but has a fair bit of vigour. Still staying with purple, have a look at purple skyliner although at a couple of metres, this might not be tall enough for you. Anyhow, I usually go with clems for purples as purple roses can sometimes be a bit of a disappointment.
PHM, ha ha - my local pharmacist alternates between boasting and wincing with this rose. Every year, like a fisherman and their hyperbolic catch, his claims for the size and vigour (and beauty) of this rose are proclaimed loudly and frequently - naturally due to his horticultural genius.....until around August when its trailing canes have become a desperate tangle with an equally enormous wisteria (I know, what was he thinking of) at which point he makes moves towards a hefty spade.....luckily, Mrs Pharmacist intervenes and I get a chance to make some cash.

You got a point with the purples, while I do like a pic of Violette on HMF where it is with some white climber, there are many clematis that can achieve the same if not better effect. My concern also is the intensity of the purple in her case, as in some comparison shots she was same color as Veilchenbleu and Veilchen does not look all that spectacular imho. It is ok rose, but again, clematis is more nice (and less sun-o-holic).

LOL about the pharmacist and his battle with PHM. In my case that's what one gets when asking DH for a rambler and is not being specific which one... :))) I wish though that we had permanent support for it in place already, since ofc the temporary kludged fix stayed in place too long and I probably will have to chop him back again, but oh well, some roses grow fast. x)

I am crazy about Wichurana ramblers. Another suggestion could be Constance Spry and Chianti. Both are wonderfull roses, not OGRs of course, but posessing all good qualities of OGRs. I prefer onceblooming ramblers/ climbers to repeat blooming too. I love to have seasons and nothing can beat the show they give in spring.

I have Constance Spry and she is v. beautiful, but it seems that she is planing to get huge here. I am going to move her this autumn to some bigger support, as she outgrew her current one already. o.O

Hm I could also plant Hugonis somewhere there, as he probably will get rather large, should be nice early in the season. There also is Plaisanterie and Raubritter to be replanted, although I doubt that Raubritter will get high enough, the motherbush of mine was only about 4-5ft in nursery nearby. :/

Hugonis is great, as well as Primula and Canary Bird. But they all get big. I never can have enough of these. They are my favorites. Nothing beats fragrant healthy roses that bloom one month earlier than others and can be cut as a branch for good vase life. I also LOVE how they look side by side with lilacs, in the garden or in a vase. They bloom around the same time.

I believe so. My hugonis is in full sun, but Primula is in a quite shady location. They should be quite similar in their requirements. Actually it is shady location in spring/summer/fall, but in winter when there are no leave on the trees is in the full sun. I think this is quite important for oncebloomers.
When I say big it is approx the same size as mature lilac bush, but I saw significant difference in two hugonis roses. I am not sure is it because one is grafted and another is own root, or because there are multiple clones going around, but grafted is much bigger than own root. I personally believe this is more a clone differences, because the flowers are also look somewhat different for these two.

yep, hugonis will be OK. should get 8feet tall. Also, have a look at R.cantabridgiensis which has a slightly longer flowering season and a bit more floriferous/. I have been craving a hugonis/xanthina/pimpinellifolia hybrid, 'Albert Edwards' from Hilliers. Then there's headleyensis....oh these yellow spring beauties can easily take over. I still miss a mighty (but fierce) Fruhlingsgold removed by our local council garden dept. (philistines)

yeah the early yellows are nice, also with their fern like foliage, although I think I only got a place for one, if even. :)

I wish I could send you my Alchemist! I accidentally ordered two, so now I have two with big long canes on them! But I don't really have room for two.

The Alchemists I have seen blooming in person are so very lovely. They are once-bloomers, but I really liked the habit and bloom.

Thanks for the offer anyways aimee, I think even if there were no sanitary restrictions, shipping one with big long canes might be tad on the expensive side. :D

My favorite climber does not fit your criteria but I just had to mention it anyway. Climbing Shot Silk is a pernetiana is from 1931 so it is not a true OGR, but it is old fashioned and a heavenly rose. It is strongly fragrant and repeats in flushes. Rust can be a problem in wetter years, but in general it is not troubled by much disease in a summer-dry climate. It is a survivor. I've seen it thriving on old houses. Oh, and it is gorgeous, too.

That's a pretty rose. It's hard to find though. Just ordered a White Cap from Heirloom. Alchemist, Frau Eva Schubert, Blush Noisette, Polka, Super Dorothy, Paul's Himilayan Musk are coming at the end of April. My MAC is not doing well after 2 cold winter, have to order another one. rooting didn't work from last fall. Keep trying to order cold hardy ones for my zone.......but got a Nahema 1 week ago, have to have one and it will be in a pot forever....... :-) Love climbers/ramblers.

Climbing Madame Caroline Testout is simply covered with buds for me right now, with one rose open and gorgeous. I have it planted in an all white garden, its pink being the only note of color. I'll bet it blooms for you in a year or two. Mine took several years to take off for me. If not, think of moving it to the warmest spot of your garden, ideally against a wall. I think roses of that background enjoy heat.
