What climber should I put next to my Fourth of July?. . .

Another one bites the dust. I placed an All Ablaze next to my Fourth of July and how dismal it is in its second year. It has got to go. This is the third climber that I've placed there and nothing rivals FoJ in vigor. But is there anything that comes close? The wall is west facing and gets afternoon sun. The FoJ does wonderfully. So far, I've had Joseph's Coat and Dr. Huey next to my FoJ. Of course, I would like disease resistancy, repeat blooming, and fragrance is nice but not mandatory. I am also not picky about the color of the rose matching Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, CJ

cj -- I understand your dilemma.
I'd almost just say, give in and plant a second FoJ.

I think Carruth's 'Berries 'n Cream' is as disease-resistant and floriferous --
at least, it is here. But visually -- ICK. I fear they would clash.

You might try Altissimo, a parent of FoJ.
The only caveat is -- our two plants were sadly virused, and never really thrived.

I tried Don Juan next to mine but he bit the dust. IT would have been pretty wouldn't it!

What terrific pics, pianoman, hoovb and sachow! Intriguing! I wonder if my baby will ever look like that? And I wonder if it will be flexible enough to tie horizontally? I didn't realize it would get that tall and as it is in front of my front deck, I don't want it to get so tall either. I have Illusion planted in front of mine, and am still planning to get a cream or apricot colored rose to go next to Illusion. Hmmm...difficult to get the spacing right. Brandy

Fourth of July.....what are your plans?

I had planned to do as little as possible, but now I have a fallen tree in the backyard that I need to finish cutting up. I was using my Jeep to haul tree trash to the local compost yard. however, on my last trip, I noted the engine temperature was out of control - It would approach normal and then fall back to cool. Indications are the thermostat has failed. I got all the supplies to service the coolant system and that has to be done tomorrow if I am to use the Jeep on saturday. (The compost yard is open only Monday evenings and part of Saturdays,) So tomorrrow, I'll be changing the thermostat and while I am at it, I will also change the radiator hoses. The hoses are at least 10 yrs old. There went my plans to do as little as possible. We will finish making plans to see our granddaughter on her birthday at the end of July. She is 800 miles away and we will be driving the distance. We will include side trips to sight see and I might stop in Northern Indiana to say hello to my cousin I discovered while researching the family tree. We'll finalize plans for a second trip in September when I will attend my 60th high school class reunion. It was thought that after the last reunion, there would be no more, but a few classmates who still live in the area managed to arrange for yet one more reunion. Its a little sad because half of us have passed away.

I have been very disappointed with the performance of my FOJ. they havd been the weakest of all 30 varieties in my garden. The other day I just pull one out and trashed it and planted something else in its place. But I have the second one growing . So I dont think that it will give me ripe fruit in 49 days (as adverised) , not even in 59 days, maybe 69 days. . I rather grow beef steaks. My Big Beef planted on 4/17 ( later than FOJ) already setting fruits. It is going to defeat FOJ by a big stretch. Sey

You guys never cease to amaze me. I worked. You'd be surprised at how many people celebrate the 4th with Tex-mes. I mean Tex-Mex. Yup. Mex, not Mes. Just got back online after a week without a computer. Longest week in my life since I went online in 1988. Yup. 1988. Absolutely roto-routed my system with a Blackberry phone app (dropped old phone in potty, activated a new, 2-year old phone) which deleted all my communication drivers (WiFi, Bluetooth, and even ethernet) and caused my factory installed Windows to claim it was a counterfeit edition. Huh? Although back online, I am really disgusted with the frou-frou Windows 10. Can do very few functional things with it. Grrrr.... But here I am. Hot, sweaty, and online. We're in our first real heatwave.

I've got mine with Sally Holmes. And then I put a Berries n Cream on the other end of Sally. That works and at least one of them is always in bloom.

That's good to know. I planted Altissimo near my FOJ and it's not done well - I thought it was dead this Spring but it's back with one sad cane. :-(

Altissimo is a good idea. They are similar in a lot of ways. Another FOJ would work. What about 'Pleasant Hill Cemetary' aka 'Wavy Leaf Noisette'? White and fragrant. Vintage says:

"Our highest recommended climbing rose; small double white blooms with a hint of cream in the centers, in small clusters; stems long and flexible and ideal for training in any manner, olive green foliage in abundance, rebloom continuous."

DORTMUND (Hybrid Kordesii, 1955) would be a perfect match right down to the vicious thorns. Both are singles, but instead of having red and white striped flowers, Dortmund's blooms are bright fire-engine red with a white center (see first picture below).

Thanks for your suggestions. I went to Heirloom last weekend and looked at several climbers. Dublin Bay (a sport of Altissimo as well) was absolutely gorgeous and even though it doesn't have much of a fragrance, I was very impressed as Heirloom doesn't spray and it seems to be very disease resistant. I also bought The Impressionist and an Eden at the 1/2 price sale. Whatever am I going to do with these? A true addiction. But once I saw the latter two, I had to have them.
