Good question to ask here on the Antique Rose Forum, Aimee! I enjoyed reading the answers of other ORG lovers and discovered some really exciting roses this way for myself! Here is my input: Hybrid Teas: Anna Pavlova. This one is a real gem in my opinion that found its way into my garden by accident. I do believe it is a rarely grown HT even though it was just released in 1981, that deserves more attention. Very beautifully formed, pale pink, full bloom and a surprisingly strong damask fragrance to die for. Frederic Mistral. A winner in my garden, light warm pink color and strong fragrance. Vigorous grower. Memorial Day. Deep pink color, huge blooms with a very intense perfume. Moonstone. Huge and I mean really huge classic white HT blooms with a pink edge. Very good cut flower. Unfortunately I only can smell a very faint scent. Mr. Lincoln. Dark red, that fades to blue-ish red, which I love, with a super strong fragrance. If you are looking for a red rose to give to the very special person in your life, this is the one. Pope John Paul II. My favorite white modern HT. The flowers are humongous and the fragrance knocks your socks of and is wafting. Vigorous rose in my garden that has been never without flowers since the first flush this year. Floribundas: Iceberg and Iceberg, climbing. I love them because they are so floriferous here in SoCa. Always give you a reliable punch of white color, where you need it. Only flaw in my garden susceptible to mildew at certain times of the year, but the advantages outweigh this drawback. Nimbus. Very unusual flower color. Brownish-mauve at times. It is a very special interesting rose, that I am sure will not be loved by everyone, but if you are into unusual colors it might be the one for you. Our Lady of Guadalupe. Silvery shine on cool pink flowers that open in a very elegant way. Grandifloras: Sweetness. Relatively new introduction. Produces very beautiful lavender colored blooms with a strong fragrance. What stands out for me is that this rose is completely healthy in my garden. That is very rare for a lavender colored rose, which are known to be disease prone. Shrub Roses: Belindas Dream. Very awesome, full pink flowers. Strong fragrance. Cymbeline. Older David Austin rose with a very unusual elegant almost pink-grayish color, that is hard to describe. Eden Rose 88/Pierre de Ronsard. To me one of the most beautiful modern roses with an old-fashioned look. Flowers are large, cupped and very full. Color is a creamy white with pink in the center. Even though many people claim that this rose has no scent, I can clearly detect a pleasant, mild, fruity, fragrance. Pretty Jessica. Small bush with exquisite, clear pink, very cupped, flowers. I like that this rose doesn't get the monster size of many other David Austin roses. Scepter'd Isle. Very elegant, pale pink, cupped shaped, flowers with a strong myrrh fragrance. It shows it yellow stamens in a very charming way, when the flower gets older. My plant is still very young but so far I love it. The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild. Also new to me, but already won my heart over with its strong citrus fragrance and beautiful, pink (darker in the center), cupped shaped, blooms. The Prince. Another new arrival in my garden, but boy the very dark crimson flowers fading to a wonderful dark purple color of this rose are just outstanding. It looks almost like velvet and the intense fragrance is another nice addition to the already very impressive blooms. Christina

I'm a little confused, some of these are not entirely tea, let me know if the noisette / china hybrids should be reported on elsewhere. A Mme Antoine Mari - no sign of mildew, occasional bs exclusively on old leaves. 2 years old now General Schablikine - as Mme Mari. Beales 'Anna Olivier' - not a spot on it all season - first year rose, still tiny Isabella Sprunt - ditto (if the blooms didn't lose form so fast this would be my perfect yellow rose) Clementina Carbonieri - ditto Mme Jules Gravereaux - ditto, except 4ft tall, not tiny. Duchess D'Auerstadt - ditto, 6ft up it's arch. No blooms but immaculate. Lamarque has been immaculate the whole summer and has taken off like a racehorse in its pot - it's well over 6ft tall. Destined to grow over an arch onto a warm wall. I love, love, love it. Still, have to see what the damp dank winter does. Perle d'Or, small, first year, spotless. B Reve d'Or has had a touch of bs on the long branch that dangled in the undergrowth - once propped up that disappeared. No sign of mildew. Comtesse du Cayla in a pot mildewed, the one in the ground did not, so I think it's an artefact of water supply rather than the rose. Lady H - blackspots a bit when unhappy; i.e., I haven't watered it enough. Never mildews. Sanguineua - occasional spots, no mildew - in desperate need of a bigger pot, so factor that in. Mutabilis, never mildew, will bs and shed and regrow leaves rapidly. No more than say, 10%. Isabella Nabonnand - needs a new pot, some bs, but it's been swamped by an ambitious euphorbia so that might be part of it. Maman Cochet and Maman Cochet white - these leave me this autumn to their new up the road home. Both had a teeny touch of mildew and bs, but I think that was lack of water related. Incidentally, they ball like it's their job. They have excellent sun and air flow too. General Galleni is about 6 inches high in his pot and not doing much. Had a touch of mildew when in shade early this spring. Beale's 'Archiduc Joseph', tiny, had a touch of bs early - again was shaded. Souvenir de Leonie Viennot. Had a little mildew its first spring and autumn, in a pot. Clean so far this year, apart from limited bs on old leaves. It bloomed like a trouper in my hottest,driest spot. C Crepuscule mildews for me, and has done so lightly but unremittingly since it first leafed out. I am not in love with it atm, really hope it grows out of it. it is in the more moisture retentive area of the garden so I don't think it's a dry root issue, unfortunately. Alexander Hill Gray, ditto, also it balls, ugh. No bs though. Le Vesuve - doesn't mildew, does BS periodically. Don't love the effect of bare thorny canes frankly. It does bloom its socks off though.

hi Nik, I can't recall seeing that rose 'Lady Alice Stanley', but it is another amongst my Wills cigarette cards shown in the framed picture above, so I'm including it below for you to see. Yes I note Beales have it, but what is interesting I think, for those of us who I detect may not be interested in the modern Hybrid Tea, but could stretch ourselves to those from the early to mid 20th Century, or earlier, is that British Bred roses from this period are now being preserved at 2 gardens here, Evenley Wood garden and Thenford Hall [Lord Heseltine]... Evenley Wood on HMF at the instigation of now retired Robert Mattock, in conjunction I think with rosarian Mr Quest-Ritson... So far, 92 roses have been transferred with another 100 or so being sourced to add to the collection... I would imagine 'Lady Alice Stanley' and 'Mrs Henry Morse' would be amongst those, although not in the first wave... 'Mrs B R Cant' would be another I should think... the breeders included so far Pemberton, Paul, Hicks, Easlea, Chaplin, McGredy, and others... the earliest rose seems to date from the 1860's but most are from 1900-1930's... Some names evocative from the period are... Lady Sydney Eardley-Wilmot Mrs Curnock Sawday Princess Elizabeth of Greece lots of others including long lost Pemberton's like 'Sea Spray'.. considered extinct previously... and several others of his breeding.. Sea Spray I rather like 'Dinah'... Dinah So good I think that these are being preserved in this way... and one can ask for propagating material if interested... ..what a lovely rose... I hope you go for it...

RosyLady, I love Lilian Austin. She came own root several yrs ago and I didn't expect much due to many Austins being very weak on their own roots in my soil and climate. She started blooming after the first year and I call her my Party Girl because her blooms are huge 3D powder puffs and are so cheery and ruffled. The color is Bubblegum pink with touches of clear yellow. I have never been able to capture just how beautiful her flowers are on camera. I do keep her in a pot. I have moved her around a bit over the yrs and she tolerates part sun although she doesnt bloom quite as much. Her leaves stay nice and green too, so that's a plus.
