More layout helped needed if you please
Comments (40)It's difficult, because of that back door/basement stairs. The little table you have in the other plan is cute, but the right side chair is in the doorway and might be hard to work around. I think the kitchen layout is wonderful, but the dining area ends up feeling cramped. Can you move the dining area window over, at all? Maybe something like this? Move the fridge down by the stove (microwave across from the fridge?) and have the overhang for the stools...and room for your table, at least a smaller one. Also, more room to get to the basement/back door. I don't think the table would seat more than three or four people, but if you could move it into the living area, for bigger parties...this might be a possibility :) You might also want to start a new post, with the info that you can move the garage door over, and see if you get new ideas! Buehl is back and maybe you'll get more input with a new post....See MoreNeed help with changing kitchen layout
Comments (23)Ha! I typed that very idea last night, then deleted it before I posted, thinking you wouldn't want to give up that lovely pantry since you have 5 kids. Plus it was late. Here's a quick idea: You have little kids right now (and at least one high chair), so I think you can get six seats around the island. Later, when the kids are bigger, remove one seat on the long side and they can still fit at an 8' x 42" island. It looks as if the dining nook seats 8 (you can have another kid! :), so the island won't need to seat the whole family. I moved the island to give you a few more inches between it and the sink/DW. Since there is now plenty of space between the cooktop and island, you can pull the cabinets on that wall out to be flush with a standard depth fridge, so you have more space in the fridge, and more counter space around the cooktop. If you are doing custom cabinets, the drawers on that wall can be deeper, to add to storage capacity. I also included a window seat/reading nook just off the play room, for the kids. (And I love window seats.) GW discussions--deeper counters GW discussions--deeper drawers...See MoreLayout change, now where do I end the backsplash? Please HELP
Comments (17)Joseph Corlett, LLC thanks for the advice! You and daisychain01 may be right. I do think that in such a small space stopping at the edge of the sill could keep the kitchen from looking like it's taking over the living room. d_gw I know, I've seen those dilemmas too! I appreciate the warning. I'm thinking it was the lighting, and the angle since the tile will of course be on the wall, not flat on the counter. I'll post a pic later of what it looks like under the window. I'm not actually trying to match the cabinets, but just have something that flows well together. The tile color is Riverwash so it can have subtle blue or green tinge mixed with a muddied gray depending on the light. The countertop has a little green in it, so I'm hoping that once I bring in my accessories it will be a good backdrop to pull it all together....See MoreMaking our house feel more open?
Comments (16)So I took y'all's advice and hired an interior designer. She solved most of my problems in less than 2 hours. 3 weeks later and in time for Christmas, my project is mostly done (just making plans for flooring and waiting for $ to replace and repaint cabinets)!! * I removed the huge pantry and made the opening twice the width I'd originally planned. * I removed all the paneling in the dining room (now it has orange peel texture like most of the rest of the house). I put up a small crown molding. * I closed off a small pass-through in the kitchen. I'll fill that space with full size cabinets. * I took the granite shelf from the original pass-through and moved it to the new opening. I put it at bar height and connected it to the peninsula bar. Almost immediately we started actually using the bar stools (a little more seating in the living room! Yay! * I took a 24" base cabinet from near the refrigerator and connected it to the peninsula. (The granite guys making the changes were surprisingly affordable!!). * I'll put a corner cabinet / pantry next to the refrigerator where the 24" base cabinet used to be. * Because I closed up the old pass-through, I now had room for a lot more storage in my sewing studio (on the other side of the wall). So the decluttering of that room is finally moving forward!* I removed the funky railing and built a pony wall. It gave me a few extra inches in the room, more outlets, and made everything look purposeful. If we ever sell the house, we'll probably call the space a "breakfast room." Even without the rest of the changes, all 4 spaces are used so much more and the place feels more open. Thanks everyone for helping me think outside of the box!...See MoreDJB Photography
