Bathrooms Design Dilemma

Two different shades of grey grout?

Hi all!

Designing a bathroom with white subway walls and a black and white patterned hex floor (white with black petals). My customer would like to use a lighter shade of grey on the walls vs the floor. I know two different grout colors is fine when introducing different color tiles, but with shades of grey on white I'm feeling the grout shades should match to create a more seamless result, otherwise your eye is just drawn to the two different shades of grey? Would love your insights on this!

Use the best color grout that works with the floor. Then do two grouted sample boards for the white wall tiles with the 2 different choices. Once you see how it looks then decide what grout to use on the walls.

For me, I would use white grout on the walls as I prefer grout to blend in and not stand out.

It would help to get better opinions if you showed what the floor tile and wall tile are and what the layout is ...

Exactly, grout is functional, not a design element.

Ok first, two grouts are incredibly easy :) My tile guy has done it all over the house for me...for instance, each row of this carpet has a different grout color: (this is pre grout by the way, but the grout is perfect in each row and matches exactly): So don't let that stop your decision. It's an easy process. They just apply blue tape where the grout isn't supposed to go, and then apply as usual. No biggie at all!!! Follow the manufacturer instructions! I did't know it was handmade. Mine is as well and there can be variation in both slope and size by very very little, but when you put up the tile, that variation becomes huge. 1/16th here and there isn't visable to the eye, until you try to make your poor tile guy do a 1/16th grout line. So go with the manufacturer recomendation. With larger grout lines, it's even more important to think of color of grout and again, I'd say use two. The reason being, look at my tile...if I'd used say a white or beige grout, (the grout is called Pear) the grout would scream at you, but the pear blends in pretty well. Big grey grout lines in the tan tiles isn't going to flow as well IMO.

Hmm....you guys might be right. I think the accent area (that is silver now) is too large of an area (going from top of second floor to botton of first floor) and thus intrudes as a result and almost makes it look like silver is the main house color (which obviously it's not). If you looked at a front profile of the house, the stone would take up the most space with the silver being second and the blue third, even though it's the color of the rest of the house. I've seen a house or two that was blue that had gray accents on the shakes but the shakes only were at the very top of the second story (they didn't come down all the way to the first floor). They were truly a small part of the front of the house...hence accent. Factor this in with the fact I have a cherry stained wood door and wanted to go with wood garage doors and having five colors (blue, gray, white, stone which is really a tannish, and then a dark wood) probably is too much.

Thank you! We finally have the plans and hopefully we will start/be in the middle of it within half a year! We are doing a huge renovation, adding 1,000+ sqft, moving the kitchen into a new location, taking down exterior walls and adding a 2nd story etc...if it was just a kitchen, it would had happened years ago :) Luckily my husband is a very talented GC! I dream and design, and he builds (and advises if my dreams cannot become a reality, ha)! I don't know exactly which counter yet...I want to choose the new flooring 1st, then cabinet colors, then counters based on how everything looks in that light. Yes, not a quick turn around project BUT I will not be without a kitchen for a day as we can do it in stages, and turn current family room into the new kitchen before starting to turn the current kitchen into a laundry/mud room. With 4 kids this should be an interesting journey ;) Hopefully hubby still loves me at the end of it!

Yes it comes from the south...lots of light and really high ceilings. I think maybe the brown on the walls now throws off the colors but if you look at the picture of where the shelves are going to be , both those colors are also on there. thanks so much. smoke embers on top and cumulus cloud on the bottom.

Thank you both - I agree on the white grout but they really liked the look of dark grout on white subway tile so that's happening. The question is, would it work to have a lighter grey grout on the subway tile and a darker grey grout on the floor, or should they be the same shade of grey... my feeling is they should be the same shade but curious your thoughts. Hex floor tile attached (and matte white subway 3x6 subway tile on walls)

No need to stick to one grout shade; look at each element and what is the best color choice for that.

Definitely use a darker gray grout on the floor.

The floor tile also has light gray, so that would tie in fine with using a lighter grout on the white subway.

I would do a board with the light gray grout and one with white grout for the subway. Show them how the floor becomes the main element when it isn't competing with rectangular light gray grid lines on the walls. I definitely would not do dark gray grout on the walls.

We have white hex on the floor and green subway on the wall—never even considered matching the grout. We used dark gray (Custom Pewter) on the floor and light gray-green (Mapei Mint) on the wall and are pleased with both. i did have to test a lot of colors with the green tile to find one that didn’t pull pink or yellow, though.
