Another Houzz change-sending messages without following

Meredith posted this on the Antique Roses forum: In Advanced Settings, you can now select, "allow anyone to message me". Then a GW member can message you without all this "follow me, so I can follow you and send you a message" business. This is GRRREAT! This wasn't an option before, so HOUZZ must have made this change by request. This will make it easier to share cuttings, plants, send personal messages, etc. Thanks Meredith for discovering this. I guess it pays to keep exploring this site, because it is evolving.

Hi there, If you click where you see "Your Houzz" in the upper right corner of your screen, then click Edit Profile, you will see a link for Advanced Settings on the left side of your screen. Click that link to see more settings, including your messaging setting. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the update, Jasmine! That's great news! I do use the messaging all the time and didn't want to go through all that following stuff.

Sue, I did receive your private message and just responded. You are right on. I can not read the message in my email because with HOUZZ it is sent as a "private message". My private email only tells me that somone has sent me a HOUZZ message, thus I have to sign in to HOUZZ to read it .........On GW, we were sending an "email", thus I could read the message in my email.. Hello o o o o Annie, is anybody home???? This is what I say when something is so obvious and I don't figure it out....LOL!!! Email vs private message....kind of basic!!!! I had the box checked last week under E Mail notification "When someone messages me", but see now that there is indeed a new addition further on down the page that gets rid of the "follow me" requirement for messages and allows just "anyone to message me". Good deal. Now if they would just give me back the option to post with my URLs from Picture Trails I'll be back to where I was (I hope).......Maryl

Thanks everyone for the commiseration - we're all in this together, that's for sure. I know many of you have already voiced your comments [HERE[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/new-look-for-gardenweb-topics-dsvw-vd~5342444) but if you haven't, that's the 'consolidated' thread for griping. You're welcome to gripe here, too but you're singing to the choir - at least Emily reads that other thread and somewhat addresses some of the issues some of the time. How's that for a qualified endorsement ;-) I have not posted there about the message issues out of an abundance of caution although I really don't believe they would care if we stay or go. However I haven't seen it brought up by anyone else so perhaps it's a problem on my end. Don't want to throw blame if it's not them.

The technology age may be a factor, Mary. I can't access places on Houzz from our older desktop. I certainly can't upload photos from it. Our computer is about the same age as yours. It was a cutting edge Mac at the time. Ha, ha. My husband ran Logic software and recorded music with it. Now it sits around and roars like a T rex, but my husband can still do music production, send emails, etc. There is a Houzz phone number you can call, too. I posted in on "[How to Contact Houzz Support Directly[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/how-to-contact-houzz-support-directly-dsvw-vd~5356515?n=8)." Our desktop runs on Snow Leopard. I think that one is too ancient for Houzz. Carol

Hover on 'Your Houz' at the top right of this page and click on 'Edit Profile' from the little menu. Look down the list on the left-hand side and click on 'Advanced Settings'. Scroll down to where it says 'Send me an email when...'. Then go down the list selecting your choice for each option, to what you want, eg 'someone replies to my comment', etc.. I have selected 'Never' for every one.

Then when you're finished making changes, click on 'Update' - the green button at the bottom, to apply the changes.

Or when you respond to a thread a message will appear at the bottom of thread that says " click to opt out of notification". Click it or email fills quickly. I have to leave the post then enter it again to see message at the bottom. Shows as very tiny print in green.

How do you send someone a personal message?

Hi Georgect: If the person has allowed anyone to message them, by setting it up in their personal profile-advanced settings, then you can send them a message by clicking their name to go to their profile and then clicking the message link on the upper right hand corner. If there is no message link, then they have not chosen to receive messages. You can also send a message if that person is following you.

You can try it by clicking my name, because I have elected to receive messages from anyone. You should see the message link when you go to my profile page.
