Bucket List: one day, Ulysses

I have on my bookshelf, hot off the Paperbackswap press, a copy of Joyce's Ulysses.

One day, one year, I am going to read it.

BUT....not on its own. I figure there are more critical essays and guides of this tome than there are punctuation marks in the whole of the text (grin).

Outside of Cliffs or Spark Notes - does anyone have opinions for companion pieces to read along and explain the many enigmas and puzzles I will encounter?

I understand I should first read Dubliners and Portrait of an Artist to meet some of the characters. I have checked out of my library Burgess's 'ReJoyce' and Blamires' 'The Bloomsday Book', both recommended by Amazon reviewers.

I made it through Beowulf and Gardener's Grendel (and the opera!), as well as Wagner's Ring Cycle, I figured this is next.

Thanks!
