Ah, but Green Darkness is SUCH a good book!

I had almost finished a book during my lunch hour at work once and was supposed to meet someone promptly after work. I sat in the car in the parking lot and finished the book while the lot emptied and I was late for my appointment.

I've read in many, many places such as up on a comfortable tree limb in my younger days, by hospital bedsides, on line at work, and others I will think of as soon as I post; but probably not more than the rest of you have.

I read Martin's Hundred by Ivor Noel Hume when I was in labor with my first son. My doctor decided I was getting too much reading done, examined me, and judged my labor was not progressing. He ordered a c-section, so I reluctantly had to relinquish my book. As soon as after I fed my son for the first time, examined him thoroughly and the nurse took him back to the nursery, I demanded to have Martin's Hundred back so I could return to reading.

I read Volcano Cowboys: The Rocky Evolution of a Dangerous Science while camped on the flank of a Mexican volcano. It was a spooky experience!

I've read many books in lots of odd places. I'm not sure which is the most unusual, but the above two are illustrative.

I'm not sure that I have read books in more unusual places than the rest of you guys...

When I was very sick in hospital, my dear lovely mum read to me whilst I was waiting for my next pain medicine injection to be delivered....(Don't remember much about the book, but do remember the really lovely experience.)

I can't go into too much detail but let's just say I was in a doctor's office and he was performing a very painful procedure on me. I was reading Into Thin Air in an attempt to ignore him. He said it wouldn't work. He was right.

When I was a girl growing up in Atlanta, there was a terraced woods behind my house. I had a favorite dogwood tree which I could easily climb. It had a sort of a triangle of limbs for a comfortable seat, and I spent many hours reading in my favorite tree. I never forgave my father for cutting that tree down, later on....

Post-Op surgery. I Lysol-ed the book so they wouldn't take it away.

Waiting in line to vote. Not particularly unusual in general, but this was the year I turned 18, which was the year 18-y/o's got the right to vote. My college campus ran a drive to get the student to register to vote locally, and thousands of us showed up to the polling place which had 2 voting machines. The line snaked down the hall into the attached dormitory, up the stairs, down the hall again, up the stairs again.... I no longer remember how many floors it stretched, but I waited in line for 4.5 hrs. Warned that the line was long, I brought my reading assignment with me: Plato's Republic. I never would have finished it otherwise, because every time I sat down to read it in my dorm room, I fell asleep over it. That wasn't possible in the line, since we'd periodically have to move.

Well, I read while walking, and on the treadmill at the gym (the treadmill is so boooooring!), but I guess possibly the most unusual place is while on the gurney making a blood donation, I was reading a children's book aloud to keep my then small daughter occupied. Every so often if I thought her attention was wandering, I would ask, "Are you still listening?" and the nurses would say, "Yes! Keep going!" :-)

On a ferry from Devenport to Melbourne. Pretzeled myself into a retangular window ledge, watched a thunderstorm out at sea for a bit, then returned to Vanity Fair.

I had a long ride to my job, and I read on the bus and streetcar both ways. I read most of The Magic Mountain in that way, as well as quite a few poems by Rabindranath Tagore. I'll always associate those two writers with that time.

In 1969, in a tiny bathroom that lacked a sink, located in the hall outside our tiny apartment. I was recently married and a teacher when I learned of a book that was written as a hoax, each chapter by a different writer. "Naked Came the Stranger" was written in the attempt to prove that any book could sell, no matter how badly written, if it included enough trite sex. I took the book to the bathroom to read the first chapter while I was otherwise occupied, and after that chapter I never deemed the book worthy of escaping the bathroom. I'm amused that the title came to me as soon as I read this thread's question. The book did sell well even before the hoax was revealed.
