I'm not familiar with that specific company but check their website and see if they tell you what their stencils are made from or call and ask. You want a thin material, 3 mil - too thick and you will have problems getting crisp edges. The larger the stencil, the more prone to tearing in use,acetate tears more easily than mylar, which is my preference. But tears can be mended so it's not the end of the world if it happens. Most of my stencils have war wounds!

How perfect do you need things? I have used their damask stencil and it was fine quality wise, but all stencils will bleed a bit and the consistency of the paint will vary so it is not as precise as a wallpaper, this kind of bothered me with my project and I noticed every flaw, but many others told me they liked it and did not notice the differences in paint thinkness like I did. The cutting edge system was easy to line up when clean so keep cleaning your stencil after a few rolls.

roarah, that is really pretty. I don't see anything but perfection in that photo! That is the sort of tone-on-tone look I'm thinking about too. Maybe the stenciled part in a gloss over the flat base coat...

This pic shows more blobs than bleeds :). I used a silver metalic paint over the existing BM tropical dusk in eggshell. It was not hard to do and it is not hard to undo either if you do not care for it afterwards:)You are a pro at painting so I think you might be able to do a better job than I. The company was easy to buy from and the help videos were helpful when dealing with corners and ceiling areas.Good luck.

That is too funny. My neighbor says that what ever she does is at least a thousand dollars.

I found you really need to roll almost all the paint off the roller before applying to the wall, and you need to clean off the stencil quite often.

Though it was a pain dealing with all the trim - I got close and then ended up cutting up the stencil to do the tight spots. Not the best, but I really like it. If I did it again, I'd take down all the trim first. I didn't decide to stencil until after the wainscoting was up.

Bee, I understand your hesitation about stenciling. I admit, I stenciled borders in my kid's rooms in the 90's (I am hanging my head in shame). I have seen some stenciling in blogland that looks really updated and crisp. I cannot comment on Cutting Edge, but considering they are in the $50 price range, I know you would want perfection. If it were me, I would shop Hobby Lobby/Michaels/Joann's for a geometric stencil of any kind and play with it to see if you like the results. Stenciling uses so little paint, I think it would be difficult to achieve consistancy in color.

Bee, I used one of their stencils on my guest bath ceiling. The stencil was great though I did have some problems in the corners as it was so large and hard to get into the tight spots. This picture is really blurry, but it will give you an idea. I think if you are doing a tone on tone it will be really forgiving of slight smudges outside the stencil. But honestly I think if you're doing it on a wall rather than a ceiling it is probably pretty easy to keep it flat and keep it from smudging.

Of course I see that and think..."Laundry room....add it to the list" I love that pattern, but I'm afraid of overdoing that one since my bathroom has the shower tile in that pattern, the curtains, and now I put one of my mirrors on the wall when you enter the room and I realized it is the same trellis pattern! So, I think I need to reserve the trellis pattern for that room. But I love the look, don't you? I need to go back and see her "how to" post.

and Namarie--wow. A ceiling. I would love to do that! Maybe my closet! Maybe not. I don't think I have what it takes to stencil a ceiling. But I never say "never". Did your stencil come with the smaller piece that allows you to get into the corners? They include that now.

I think I should order. DH is out of town next week. I need a project.

Bee, mine originally did not come with a corner piece and I had some problems as I mentioned above, but managed. However, when I got to the area above the tub it was impossible to get into those corners without them because the ladder was stuck in the middle of the tub and my arms wouldn't reach far enough to hold the stencil in the corner and paint at the same time. I contacted Cutting Edge and they not only sent me the corner piece but an entire new stencil as well.

One way to get a new wallpaper look without a $1000 bill, put wallpaper on one wall only. Cheaper and easier.

I love Cutting Edge. I ordered from them this last summer and the shipping was fast and the quality good. I haven't used the stencil yet.

The nice thing about the allover stencils is that if you ever change your mind it's easy to paint it out. Wallpaper is a pain to strip.

In the October 2012 issue of THIS OLD HOUSE is an article about stencilling a ceiling medallion around a light fixture.

They used a Cutting Edge stencil. The designer based it on historic plasterwork.

You might want to look at it.

i'm late to pipe in...but, my daughter and I purchased a stencil from cutting age. It was a geometric pattern simliar to the one the original poster is interested in. We watched the tutorials several times..followed all the instructions...the roller was almost dry...and the design was not at all crisp. The paint bled around the edges and we were never happy with our attempts. We painted over our efforts four times before giving up. Their stencils are expensive and not worth it IMO if you want a clean crisp look. if you are going with a flowing design that is not geometric you might not notice all the flaws.

I've been following this thread as I want to use one of the all over stencils in my dining room. I'm thinking of the vine pattern.

dlm2000 mentioned the thickness. I checked and they are "12 mil clear plastic stencil material". Apparently not mylar. Is this a problem?

I also would like to know if spray adhesive or tape was used.
