two swiches, one box, many hours

Hi all,

I have a two-switch gang box (if that's the right terminology) in my kitchen. One single-pole switch currently controls our main kitchen light. The other switch appears to have once controlled an exterior light (both the ext. light and the wire from the switch to it were removed prior to my moving in).

I want to install an exterior floodlight to be controlled by the aforementioned unused switch. I've already run new 12-2 to the box, so I just need to hook it all up. This, unfortunately, is where it gets interesting.

As things are now, there is one 12-2 connected to the working switch, and then the 12-2 for the ext. light waiting in the wings. How can I have the two lights independently controlled by their respective switches, given the wiring situation?

All of my electrically-minded friends have given me different and, frankly, discouraging answers.

Thanks for any help.

Sam
