Need a vote-Artwork or mirror?? (on the fireplace-pics included)

Need help!! This is my family room, soon to be repainted! I fiercely opposed the idea of having the TV mounted on the fireplace wall! Now I got 2 problems: no.1 - I can't decide what to put on it-artwork or mirror! I've attached a link to the exact artwork that will go there.

Problem no.2-I can't decide if i should put 2 floating shelves or 3 framed art behind the TV wall. I honestly don't want to do an entertainment unit-just minimal tv presentation!! Help please!! I do apologize for the photo size!! Will do better next time.(trying to figure out the best size)

What will the mirror be reflecting?

At the moment neither of them are working for me. I think that the scale of the items are too small. Maybe if the mirror were to be hung? I dunno. I would keep looking.

As far as above the tv, my vote is for artwork, perhaps a series of them.

I'm new to this forum, having spent most of my time till now over on the Kitchen Forum and Great Impressions . . . Hello Teacats! I love your armoire,Bcarr. Can you show us a close-up of it? It looks like a couple others I've seen and admired here in NM. It is busy and dominating, though (in a wonderful way, I mean), so I'd personally go with artwork that didn't mimic the squares in the armoire doors. Of the ones you've show, I like the second choices the best, as they have a more linear look. I'd avoid squares in the artwork or a set of 4 pieces of anything.

I went looking for images of those elements. Ribbed glass panels in cabinet doors is easy enough. Here's one in a bathroom vanity: Ribbed glass (or ''seeded'' glass) is also often found in period light fixtures: As for marquetry countertops, if you asked most kitchen cabinet makers for such, I imagine they would gape blankly at the gabbling woman. But there are plenty of companies doing stock and custom hardwood marquetry inlays using CNC laser cutters. Here's the thing - they are doing it in floors. Google ''hardwood floor inlay'' and see. Yes, many of the rosettes are infeasible for a 26'' counter, but look for the ''border'' designs - or create your own. Assemble a 26'' wide section of inlaid ''floor'' on a 3/4'' plywood substrate, encase it in Waterlox, and I do believe you'd have yourself a marquetry countertop. Another option - perhaps cheaper - is stenciling on hardwood, of which this is an example. And so is this What else? Beveled glass is readily available, as is chrome countertop edging, and any furniture or auto upholstery shop can cover a panel of 1/8'' plywood in soft butterscotch leather framed in silver studs (maybe not actual silver, but close enough). I don't know exactly what version of Art Deco you are headed for, or if you even like butterscotch, but the point is, you are not doing yet another white kitchen, you're doing something that isn't being done by the mainstream, so the ordinary kitchen sources are not making this stuff. Sure, there is cool Art Deco hardware around, but what passes for ''Art Deco'' kitchen cabinetry in the online catalogs is . . . disappointing. You are going to have to make it, or at least source it, yourself - and I think if you're comfortable outside the painted lines, you can. You'll find yourself hiring a floor guy to work on a countertop, hunting down the local hot rod upholstery shops, telling your cabinet maker to fit bathroom vanity faces to kitchen cabinet boxes - they'll still look at you like you're crazy, but you'll know you're not. Go for it, girl!

door1, I was also thinking about maybe doing a glass shelf to hold something. I will look into that. htnspz, I think my DH agrees with you in regards to the wall cabinet. I do love the mirror and vanity both are new so changing that is not possible (may be I should have posted here before selecting not really good with this stuff). I can surely look into changing the bulbs in the light fixture. I also agree about the paint color in the bathroom but don't have time to do this before holidays. Thanks again for all the feedback.

Awesome suggestions! I've been sparked! @njmomma: I like this example. As the original buffet comes with a mirror, I don't like it. Perhaps a separate vintage mirror would be nice to reflect some light in the space. Then I can hang pictures around it. @yvonne: I have hordes of pottery and you bring up a good idea; instead of buying more art I should hang my pottery on the wall, after taking off the mirror top. We have quite a few family pictures; in our previous home the buffet was flanked by those vintage items. However as this space has less traffic than the front hallway where I was considering for the family pictures, I'll keep the pottery in this location and the family pictures in the front hallway. @holly: I'm refining my mint favorites. I'm looking at reds, oranges in abstracts and landscapes. However previous suggestions of using pottery may put Minted on the back burner. @tedbixby: yes I have considered putting the wicker chairs on either side of the buffet..To the right of the buffet is a dry sink which is normally in the living room but due to the Christmas tree we had to switch it out with a drop leaf table (which is usually to the right of the buffet under the window). @grover: the room functions as it is. There's a dog pen because we have to pen them when we're gone. We don't use a dining room table, so it doesn't need to function as that. And we have an abundance of antiques but less room than our previous house so we have to find a wall for them. I wish we could put them in storage, but these are my husband's family pieces and he's not interested in doing that. And he's not ready to reduce the inventory, so we have to work with the pieces in the square footage that we have.

I'm a mirror fan so I vote mirror. I would suggest however that either way you go, a larger mirror or piece of artwork would really make a statement. If you are set on those exact sizes then I'd go with the mirror.

Artwork over the mantle, but something larger. How about the current piece but overlapped with a larger piece behind?

Why don't you try a combination of both shelves and artwork over the TV? There's a lot of empty space on that wall, so small items might look lost. Check out the paint treatment on the attached.

First question: Is that TV really the right height for comfortable viewing?

Mirror? I don't see anything very interesting reflected in it, and that's really the purpose, not just to reflect daylight (candlelight, well that's different)--who wants to see just a painted wall reflected in it? What's already on, or going on, the opposite wall?

I'd go for art, but the sample piece is just too small to command the space. What else ya got? Anything horizontal or square even? Anything from another room?

For the other wall, I generally love floating shelves, but what lengths are you thinking of? I think you want to have 2 pieces of something lengthy to stagger on that wall, something that stretches beyond the TV cabinet. What will you put on the shelves, do you know yet?

Thank you guys!! Htnspz-the mirror won't be reflecting anything special. As far as the artwork, the one in the pic is a 24 by 24. The artwork that i'll be getting(in the link attached) will be 36 by 36. The mirror will be the same size(33"), but with a heavier/thicker trim-like the one on the link. Keep the votes coming!!!

Pammyfay, the tv is at a good height for viewing when we're seated. As far as what will go on the shelves, I have some vases of different shapes, dimensions and textures and other accessories that i think will work(probably do another photo as soon as i have them up if i do those). The shelves i was thinking about 30"long, staggered as you mentioned.

IMHO - I don't care for mirrors over a fireplace. When you sit on the sofas/chairs all you see is a reflection of the ceiling. An exception for me are the starburst mirrors, but only if the mirror itself is tiny in the center with the "starburst" itself encompassing most of the piece. So I am in agreement with the ladies in favor of artwork.

Can someone photoshop the artwork you've chosen to scale for you to see - or can you tape a 24 X 24 piece of paper to the wall? My first reaction was that a horizontal piece would work best but seeing it mocked to scale can really make a difference as to what looks the nicest.

I know you have said the tv is at the right level, but it seems to be too low for that wall. As it is now, you have the tv placed on a "shelf" - the shelf being the top of the table so I cannot envision placing another shelf above that. If you look on the examples shown on the link that elsa sent, you will see that 1)the tv is mounted to the wall and the shelves are under the tv - not over and 2)where there is furniture like you have, the pieces are more substantial and higher, and they do NOT have shelves over them. The examples at that link seem to be more in scale with a wall of your size. As always, IMHO.

That would be a great wall for built-in bookshelves. The tv could stay at its current height since most people have tvs too high for best viewing and the other shelves could be used for books, etc.-maybe even art if you plan the shelves aroung that.

A vote for the mirror and the orchid. Hang the mirror -- so that the upper edge of the mirror is slightly higher than the tops of the window frames.

Place the thin dark candlesticks together slightly behind the TV on the left-hand side. Add clean-lined simple crisp white candles in them.

Find a set of eight small or six medium artworks -- OR simply mat and frame some personal black-and-white photos. Hang in a tight grid above the TV. OR create a photo gallery by adding some black shelves.

Thank you Lynn and Teacats!! I never thought I could get so many ideas-especially for the TV wall!! I'm loving the gallery wall idea!
Cyn 427, the bookshelf idea is fantastic-the only thing is I have a living room that will have those (mainly to be used for reading-no TV in there.)
Thank you again ladies for your help. Lynn, I'd love for someone to photoshop the artwork. I'll try to cut a piece of paper to show the size of it.
