How to Fix a Mirror-Above-the-Mantel Dilemma

Got an unmovable mirror over your fireplace? Use trim to turn it into a feature that will turn heads

When you buy a home, you also buy a big to-do list. My living room, for example, featured a large wall-mounted mirror above the traditional fireplace. It measured about 3 feet by 4 feet and was held in place by heavy metal clips. It looked rather old and industrial and did not fit the style of the living room.

BEFORE: As my contractor began to remove the mirror, he discovered it was stuck on with heavy glue or plaster and had probably been there for about 50 years. Taking it down would mean tearing a hole in the wall, and a plasterer would need to be hired to patch it up.

I decided to see if I could work with the mirror. I did some searches and came up with a slew of ideas for what to do. I quickly discovered that a mirror built in above a mantel can work with any style. My plan: make the mirror become part of the fireplace.

AFTER: I framed out all four sides with molding and trim and added more to the top to mimic the millwork already there. I then painted the new frame, mantel and fireplace surround with Benjamin Moore's Decorators White to make it look like one uniform feature.

What was once the elephant in the room is now a conversation starter. I saved some money and ended up with a unique fireplace wall that looks like it has always been there.

Keeping the mirror gave me a decorating bonus: I am not tied down to the color scheme in a particular piece of artwork.
