Please Help My Dining Room

Hoping your eyes can help me. There is very little room for the people sitting in the chairs in front of the china cabinet. I have a glassed china cabinet that matches my table in an upstairs room. It is large, but it would fit in the corner where you see the wreath and I could move the present china cabinet elsewhere. I could also move the present china cabinet into that space. I am just wondering if the room will look a bit lopsided then. I will have a large blank wall where there cabinet is now. You look directly at the present cabinet when you enter from the kitchen which I do kind of like as it has lights at night.

Here is the other cabinet that matches my table. The earlier photo is from the living room into the dining room.

Well I guess it depends on how often you need to use all the chairs. I have the same issue, and when I need to use all the chairs I just scoot the table out a bit. Far from perfect, but better FOR ME than looking at an unbalanced wall every day.

Is another living room the greatest need you have in your house? Will it be for the kids to hang out in? Or a quieter adult retreat? We turned our dining room into a home office with matching desks facing each other placed in the middle of the room, so together they are about the same size as a dining table. It looks like it might be large enough to fit a modestly sized sofa in there, with a small round table with 2-4 chairs that you could use as a gaming table. Any musicians? What about a music room?

When it comes to hanging art, keep in mind those Velcro Command Strips. I use them to hang almost everything and they don't damage the walls. They hold a surprising amount of weight. That metal scrollwork would probably take one nail, but most artwork, unless the frames are really heavy, can be hung with the command strips. I'm not so sure the metal piece is "farmhouse." Rustic, probably. When I think farmhouse, though, I don't think of that type of piece. I think you can do better, but if you really LOVE it, then go for it! I do like the upholstered ottoman but I like yayagal's coffee table suggestion even better! It will definitely help set the farmhouse tone you want.

I did some rearranging! Does this look a little better? Trying to convince the husband we need to get rid of the end tables...sigh. I think he's willing to let the baker's rack go, but I'm gonna have a fight on the end tables. Maybe he'll let me put them in the basement. Please excuse the clutter in the dining room....tchotchkes need to be rearranged or gotten rid of. I put a few things on FB marketplace and have gotten some interest. If I can't get any $ for things, I can donate. Salvation army took our old sofa so there's always that option.

Woah celerygirl!! That is awesome! Thanks. Ok a few questions. I like all three mock ups. Where do I find the curtains and rug in the first photo? I like the black and white art in the third photo but I think the first photo makes the room brighter. I have a couple days off work so hopefully I can go shopping play around with some of your ideas.

First -- please take some more photos of the wall space to the left-hand side of the photo (I think that is the wall with the door to the kitchen) ..... just so we can "see" all the way around the room ....And a photo from the living room towards the dining room (so we can see the exact position of the table)

I do like the current china cabinet in that spot -- and like the idea of having the lighted cabinet seen through the kitchen door ....

So ... IF possible, consider moving out the child chair (by the china cabinet) AND the chair in the far corner .... then shift the dining table a FEW inches towards the kitchen door .... just to see if that simple move might help ....IF you have to re-center the chandelier -- you could swing the chandelier over an inch or two by hanging it on a hook ....

Thank you everyone. Am adding a couple pics as teacats requested. The first is of the attached living room and the second is the rustic cabinet on the same side as the kitchen door. In addition to the size issue with the chairs, do you think the dining room over all is just too old fashioned. Could definitely remove the little rocker (was my grandfather's) and that extra corner chair.

I'd put the china cabinet where the green cabinet is and put the green cabinet behind the sofa. Keep the lamps on the green cabinet and run the wires between the back of the cab and the back of the sofa, making a three-sided flap in the carpet under the sofa or cab so you can run the cord under the carpet to an outlet. Then, if you ever have that section of carpet out in the open, the slicing won't be noticeable at all.

First I just want to say that I love your home and the way you have decorated with such unique pieces. I have the same issue in my dining room, but because we rarely use the room, we haven't moved our hutch. Personally, I really like the way you have it arranged now unless it really poses a problem with people not being able to sit comfortably.

Your home is very charming, and even more so because it's not "on trend". I see it as warm and inviting, interesting and not "old fashioned."

I like how the dining room is and think the cabinet looks great there. I agree that I would either move the chandelier over a few inches and center the table under it, or just leave as is and pull the table away from the cabinet a bit when I had guests. Really, when you are seated at a table it's much more difficult to discern whether it is exactly centered under the light or not.

I can't see it too well, but I think I have the same antique child's rocker. It was my mom's, given to her by her father when she was about 3, so 1920. My 4 year old grandson now has it. I would keep it somewhere that you can enjoy it, either where it is or someplace else in the main living area.

Yes, I like it a lot more without the table cloth. Couldn't you just move the table more to the center and swag the lamp?
