Remember my 1 color dilemma for the entire house?

I was thinking of sticking with my favorite paint strip from BM, the one with Nimbus and Baltic Gray on it.

I went to the new house today. No walls, just framing. I'm afraid that Nimbus might look too light in the bright rooms. Should I just go with one darker, Smoke Embers? 1466. Or should I go lighter with Nimbus and play it safe?

I'm afraid that the NImbus in the 2 story foyer might look too cold since it is lighter. I can paint any other room later, but not the foyer! Too tall.

Can you advise? I want to make this decision today and get it off my list.

You like a bit of drama and lots of style...go with the smoke embers, it's a beautiful color. I know Behr paint is poo poo-ed here but you might want to check out Behr Porpoise in paintable flat. I think you will really really like it. The color looks great on it's own but takes other color pops very well. I had all but decided on smoke embers when remodeling sons house but changed to Porpoise at the last minute. I have never had so many compliments on a paint color before.

I would err on the side of darker when it comes to volume and abundant light. Mo'space, mo'light usually equates to mo'color.

But here's the thing about that strip from BenM. It's from the Classic Colors collection. Each color on each strip in that entire fandeck is an *individual* color. Meaning while the colors on each strip share similar characteristics, but they each have their own colorant provenance. They are NOT 'let-downs' from a parent color.

Only about 30 - 40 percent of all strips/fandecks are literal let-downs from a parent color. Most of them are like Classic Colors. Colorant mixes are similar but technically the colors on the strips are not exact steps starting with a dark, saturated color and graduating *up* to lighter values and saturation.

In other words, Smoke Embers is not the darker version of Nimbus. They are two distinctly different colors that simply share similar core colorant(s) and thus color characteristics... and end up being organized on the same strip of 7 colors.

Ben Moore's other collection, Color Preview, IS comprised of let-downs. Mathematically, technically each step on those strips are regimented, starting with the darker, saturated color and graduating up to lighter, less chromatic.

deedee, I have seven sets of Tarot cards. *cheesy grin* I have most of them because I loved the artwork on them; for many years I only had one set (which had actually been a gift from someone else) but in recent years there has been an explosion in beautifully-done Tarot cards as well as this broader range of cards being more readily available. Anyway, I like to use Tarot readings to stir up things in my subconscious mind, provoke ideas that I hadn't necessarily thought of already, and come up with different ways of looking at things going on in my life and the potential ramifications if I do this or this or this. And yes, sometimes the weirdest coincidences do pop up, but do I think they are accurate predictors of future events? Nah. Ditto for astrology, numerology, crystal reading (although I do have a pint-size basket of crystals and stones of various types, they're pretty and fun to play with, and some of my friends are either rockhounds or crystal folks), I Ching, examining animal guts, and other types of divination. I think they can all have their uses, but I don't think relying entirely on any of these things is a good way to direct your life. Do you guys REALLY believe planetary orbits have ANYthing to do with life/events on earth?!?!? What one believes in - and I mean really believes, on the gut level - can have a very significant effect on their emotions, behavior regarding self and others, and worldview in general. I mean, at risk (ha! near-guarantee) of offending some other posters, when you really get down to it it's just as reasonable as basing all of one's life choices on the belief that there's a noncorporeal being who is omniscient, omnipotent, and almost entirely oriented on having direct influence on virtually every tiny detail of existence (including fielding constant requests and demands from millions of people who believe this being is continuously observing them), and may suffer great emotional disturbance over behaviors that may offend said being. And to top it all off, many of these people - often quite viciously - condemn others who don't share their belief in this particular being, or even might address the same being differently than they do, sometimes to the point of murdering other humans. Viewed dispassionately, it makes about as much sense as basing all of one's life decisions, behaviors, and even self-definition on the movements of celestial bodies light-years away, doesn't it?

Mixing brands is totally fine. Some people can't tell the difference, some people most certainly sense a difference between one final finish/color quality and another. It's a way to add another level of interest, dimension. I love to use full spectrum color juxtaposed to *regular* colors. It's a level of contrast that's lost on some folks, but very present for others. It's an option -- and options and choices are a good thing when it comes to paint and color. Specifying product - you don't have to use Aura everywhere unless it's really needed or wanted. Flagging the kid, hi-traffic, darker color areas for Aura and the rest in Regal is a smart strategy. You've customized your paint/color plan to what you really need. Difference between the finishes of BenM and C2 have more to do with color than actual finish. C2 uses more colorants than BenM and because of that C2 color can bring a unique nuance and personality to the atmosphere. Aura matte is far more 'scrubbable' than C2 flat. As kit suggested, upping the sheen level is a good solution to get built-in clean-ability. Contractor may freak, may charge you more, may just roll with it. Won't know 'til ya ask. With what you have going on with the finishes and glazes and whatnot, just make sure you communicate with him up-front and regularly throughout the project.

Funcolors, so cool that you're still here. Thanks for the help, man. I think it was you who originally suggested the dark trim. And you even remembered the lamp post. I just couldn't bring myself to get rid of the relic, so a little Rust-o-leum and voila. Malarkey is based in Oregon, just a couple hundred miles south of here, and its shingles are highly thought of here in the wet west. Did oodles of research and couldn't find much at all in the way of complaints. Again, thanks for the helping hand.

"I am not totally clear about the foyer. In the last pic, where is the front door....just to the right, behind that jut-out of closet or whatever? Is the dining room behind you?" Yes, the door is on the right, the clock and that table are in front of it. So when you come through the front door the hall to the family room would sort of be if you followed that rug (which isn't there anymore). The photo is taken from the dining room. If looking at the Living Room from this vantage point, (through that small doorway) the window is a bit further out to the right, not the same as the dining room. Right now my LR walls look like the Partridge Family bus. I have Agave, Wasabi, Kalamata, and 3 grays on there. I will see how they look when I get home, and also tomorrow is supposed to be a sunny Saturday here, so it will give me a chance to evaluate them all day long. Here's my observation as of last night, the Agave looks really "flat", no depth to the color. My dh is scared to death of the Kalamta (dark purple) and I sort of agree, even thought the purple "goes" with the gray, it's random. The Wasabi was surprisingly nice at night with the lights on, but this am, it sort of looked a little bright. So, before work I added three grays to the wall. I am so afraid I won't be able to decide. I guess it is only the LR, and I can repaint it myself if I have to . As long as I'm confident on the foyer and its ceiling I think it will work out. (and yes, there will be white chairs in there (or gray depending on the color of the walls)

Update

Painted a hunk of drywall in Smoke Embers. It's the same color as the naked drywall. Interesting. And it's too light.

Also tried Baltic Gray. (yeah, who's laughing now about my large sample collection of gray paint?). It's better, but could go "more" color.

Willow Creek. Same color I had in my master bedroom at the old house :*(
It looks purple here. It looks purple in my rental townhouse too. I'm taking it back over this evening for another look.

So, back into the basket of samples. I'm trying to find a gray that will look right with the Super White quartzite. That gray is on the bluer side. I just tested BM Pewter. Not too bad.

While I'm at it I have SW fandeck out and I'm looking at Gray Matters 7066.

Funcolors, I see what you mean about the Classic Colors collection. They all played well in my last house but I can see how they complement each other but are not let-downs.

I think I will have to go and get a sample of the SW Gray Matters to test too. (Am I seeing green in that one?)
