Would love your opinion on my MBR furniture. Pics

I am giving our MBR a makeover and having custom furniture made. The furniture maker starts buiding it in May, so I need to finalize things by then. Below are google sketchup pics I made of what I want the furniture to look like (we are getting 2 nightstands, one tall dresser and one long dresser). The plan is for the dark wood to be walnut and the lighter wood ash. The furniture maker will provide stain samples when he gets started on our project. Please let me know what you think and if you would change anything. I am providing the pulls (they were not included in our quote), and I am really struggling with these. I think I want chunky, contemporary ring pulls in a polished nickel or chrome finish, but I am not having a lot of luck finding reasonably priced ones. The one on my mood board has a 3 inch diameter and this is what I put on the google sketchup images. Are they too big? This particular ring only comes in this diameter. I have a sample of it and the quality is what you would expect in an $11 pull of this size - not great, but it's acceptable. If I put 2 pulls on each drawer, which I think is the look I prefer, I need 36! I think I like the 2 pulls because it accentuates the long look of the furniture, so maybe I should go a completely different direction and use bar pulls? I am worried that this would be a more modern look than I am going for.

As far as finish, maybe I should abandon the polished nickel / chrome and go for ORB? As you can see on my mood board, our bed is iron (very dark brown, but not black finish) and for now I am planning iron curtain rods as well. Our lamps have a chrome base and a bit of chrome at the top of the cone (see pic) - for now, this is the only other shiny silver finish in our room. I am considering polished nickel or chrome curtain rods, but I am worried they will look like shower curtains especially since I really like the simple return curtain rods without finials. The owl pics are not framed yet, but we are leaning strongly to a very dark brown, almost black frame that matches the bed.

My main questions are about the furniture, especially the pulls, but any critiques of my choices are welcome! My sweeby test (sweeby test is a kitchen's forum thing) for this room is elegant, contemporary, simple, orderly and neat. I know many of my choices are trendy, but I think I will be happy with them for many, many years.

I'm no expert on these matters and may be totally wrong, but personally, I'm getting more of a 60's vibe than a contemporary one from your mock up. Don't go by me though, there are others here with more experience. One thing I've noticed is that there are too many repetitive circles going on in the curtains, bed and drawer pulls. So I guess I'd opt for different hardware on the furniture. Check Lee Valley for their catalogs.

It is too many circles for my taste. And the pulls as shown, really dominate the furniture.

If I were you I would start collecting samples of possible choices for the pulls, and wait till I can see them against the furniture before making my choice.

I do think the curtain rod would look like a shower rod if you use silver.

Yesterday I was in Costco and they had the Shark Rotator Powered Lift Away 3 in 1 vacuum on sale with an instant $60. manufacturer's rebate. I paid $239 and it came with the under appliance tool, the upholstery brush, a 2 in1 crevice tool, the weird floor tool where you can attach a cloth and vacuum and dust simultaneously, the canister caddy and the attachment that I really like - the mini motorized brush. The vacuum head LED lights and another light on the handle. I had been using the top model Sears Progressive canister for years but I don't like their newest model - nor the price - so I thought I'd give the Shark a try. Costco has a wonderful return policy too. I used it immediately because my black Lab is a notorious shedder. It seemed to do a good job. One thing I noticed and didn't like is that the wheels are close together and I have one rug that shows vacuum marks - well for some reason the Shark leaves very noticeable wheel lines in the rug. The next time I vacuum I'll do a little comparison test. Vacuum half the family room with the Kenmore and half with the Shark. Empty the containers and then vacuum again switching vacuums and see how much they pick up. I've avoided Shark for the same reason I've avoided all of those "As Seen on TV" things. The informercials are just so enthusiastic and loud that they remind me of Boardwalk shills.

mamabird, I can appreciate your (or is it DH's?) desire to have a white room to house that large stone fireplace. It sounds very good to me, in fact - a lovely Scandinavian-country look. I really like the idea of a nearly-white in that room - it won't look cold! not with that behemoth of a firebox in the room. LOL! If you like the White Dove for the woodwork, it looks good. For the walls, if you're amenable to other brands, I would suggest Farrow and Ball's "Strong White". I have this colour in my living and dining areas and it looks like cashmere on the walls - just regular undyed, cashmere. A definite white with a little bit grey, a bit green, a bit tan, but only enough to keep that white from being blinding. Strong White's my preference for your room. It will "go" with the white dove as well as with the tan of the stone. Another (set of) suggestions are from Donald Kaufman. I have DK-24 (in a bedroom) and I love it. It is basically a white with some green, blue and lilac / tan to it. I have it in north-facing room and it reads quite like a blue-green tinted white - once again just enough to knock the blindingness out of the white. This would be even more of a scandinavian-country touch to your room with the great big stone fireplace. Other nice whites from DK are DK-4,5 and 6 the last of which has a noticeable amount of green to it. So not a green colour per se, but a green-shaded White. Alternatively, if you're really bound for a deeper colour in the white-ish territory, I'd suggest F&B's Off-White or Shaded White. Both are gorgeous, definitely deeper colours but both also come across as whites-in-shade if you get what I mean ;-) And I think they'd go swimmingly well with that stone fireplace. Good luck. For what its worth, I support your paint-it-white vision as I think the look will look stellar in it with the fireplace.

Welcome Kellym2! When you say you don't want to change the footprint, I assume you mean you do not want to change the location of any appliances or the locations/sizes of windows and doorways...is that correct? If so, you may not have many options. However, if you're willing to consider other layouts, you may get more input. You do seem to be open to swapping the refrigerator & range...which would help with a point I was going to bring up...that your range would be better protected on the other side. It would also make it easier to drain pasta, etc. if you don't have to walk across the room to the sink....you could even "slide" it if you needed to! If you don't move the refrigerator, does the cabinet b/w the wall & refrigerator have to be 9"? Could it be 4" or 5"? 4" is big enough for a 4'' Broom Closet and it would give you another 5" to use b/w the DW & sink...a 14" cabinet (or 12", if 14" not available in your cabinet line...which would then give you a 6" broom closet). Do you know the dimensions of the space...wall lengths, window/door/doorway widths, distances b/w walls/windows/doors/doorways? It's a little difficult to put it all together. It would also be helpful if we knew what rooms adjoin the kitchen in all directions. BTW...if you just sketch your kitchen out on graph paper and label the walls, doors, windows, etc., it would be easier to get the whole picture. Fillagirl, I'll definitely try that. Great idea! Thank you. I love the look of some screens but I really like the idea of the doors with young kids around. Wonder if it's possible to do it both and still look nice. I'll keep you posted. Speaking of Better Homes and Gardens, there's a fireplace in the October issue with a bluestone hearth and then bluestone, too, over where my brick is now. Looks beautiful. Something to think about! Very MCM furniture!

Personally, I would abandon the idea of metal pulls at all, and have the cabinet maker do wood pulls in the darker stained color.

I love it. The only thing I would consider (as I also have a beautiful wrought iron bed) is that it's very uncomfortable with the pillows leaning up against the metal when you're sitting up in bed reading or watching tv.

It looks remarkably like my parents set from about 1951-52... The circle knobs, the two-tones, number of drawers (dovetailed), the legs. Theirs also has a framed mirror. It has been in use all these years, and is currently, in excellent condition, doing service in my five-year-old grandson's bedroom!

Yours will be beautiful. I hope someday your great-grandchild can have a little history in his/her room!

I agree with the others about the pulls. My vote would be for a wooden knob. I have a brass headboard. You will probably have decorative shams as part of your bedding set. I put very firm pillows in mine so when I prop them up against the headboard with my regular pillow infront of it, it is comfortable for reading.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. I have to say that I feel so relieved reading that you don't care for the ring pulls, I guess because I wasn't 'feeling it' with them either! Really, I could care less if it's considered MCM or contemporary - whatever. I love les's idea of wood pulls to match the dark wood and DH liked it to, so I will explore that idea.

K9arlene, your point is a good one! We have already bought this bed and are using it. I guess we don't prop up in bed much, because it hasn't bothered us. We are really happy with this bed. And I will use ellendi's suggestion to put firm pillows in our decorative shams and bolster pillow - good idea!

Sherrmann - I would love to see a pic, but it's probably not easy to get one.

Here is my main inspiration pic, although I kind of did the opposite coloring. It has teeny tiny knobs, so I obviously strayed in a big way from it. Maybe I will get some samples like these, but I don't know.

That looks like the bed I just ordered! It's being delivered on Friday...I do like the furniture, but agree with the pulls, too large...

Now I have to shop for furniture to match the bed, too :)
