Well since turkey breasts cost over $5.99 a pound here, it would irritate me that I was paying that much extra for a gravy packet.

Wow Ann I cant believe how much a turkey breast cost in canada.I paid $1.89/lb here in mississippi at our local Kroger[large chain grocery store].

Oh, lordy, Ann, even at a high end butcher shop, fresh, hormone-free turkey breast was 2.50 a pound. What a deal!! The one we purchased is a little over 12 lb. with no gravy packet. Good thing .... I made gravy yesterday. Yummy!

I can't believe what you all pay for turkeys. The cheapest grocery store turkeys around here are $1.98 a pound. A free range or fresh turkey usually costs in the $3.50 to $4.50 a pound. I paid just under $60.00 for our Canadian Thanksgiving turkey and it was just over 15 pounds. Crazy isn't it?

I paid $1.68 a pound for mine. It was a name brand (Honeysuckle White) but not organic or anything. I'd rather make my own gravy so I wasn't impressed with the packet.
I used to have a meat thermometer but don't anymore. I normally would just go by the chart on the wrapper but this one had more juice than what they usually do and I don't want to overcook it...or undercook it. : )

Christie I usually go for a bout 25 minutes per pound and then let rest covered before carving. That is assuming the breast was close to room temp when you started it. If it was still cold I'd add another few minutes per pound.

I can vouch for what Ann is saying my Thanksgiving turkey (22 pounder cost me $92 mind you it was fresh free range but frozen would have been easily $45.

Guess are turkey farmers get smaller turkey subsidizes than your LOL!

The frozen turkey in our freezer was free because we spent $300 at the Acme during the promotion period. We're saving it for when the kids come at Christmas. The "all natural" Wegmans turkey breast DW and I are having today cost $2.49 a pound.

I've always assumed that the recommendation on the label is based on the cooking weight, not the label weight.

But my experience has been that when I take a fully thawed or fresh turkey straight out of the fridge and cook it for the recommended time, at the recommended 325º, the breast meat has not come up to 160º. I usually end up cooking it for 15-20 minutes longer. (My oven is accurately calibrated.)

I have a t-breast in the oven right now (6 lbs). I am convection roasting it at 300 degrees. I tell its done by taking its temperature (170 degrees).

I paid 99 cents a pound for it on sale a few months ago (but that was really cheap).

As far as cooking, I use a thermometer now. Pick one up, a plain dial one is only a couple dollars and one with a probe and separate unit with alarm is about $15. REALLY makes a difference to have turkey cooked to the proper temperature, especially white meat.

We have two "big" grocery chains around here and not a lot of competition. However since we grow the most turkeys (insert your own joke here!), we should be cheap since the shipping is less, and we have several processing plants. The bigger chain has quit posting prices at holiday time. They both have a policy they won't be undersold on turkey so Cub lets Rainbow set the price. Last year it was 59¢/# the Sunday before Thanksgiving and then they dropped the price to, I believe it was 29¢/# on Wednesday. Cub matched it. Some years they would beat it by a penny. Last year Cub slipped and put a $1 off coupon in some of the papers. My cousin got one of them so he bought a 14# turkey for 29¢/# less $1 for the coupon! LOL He's quite the bargain hunter! This year it was 58¢/# and I was in the store yesterday and Cub seemed to keep the price. Of course this price required a $25 additional purchase, last year it was $50 IIRC.

I prefer turkey breast and that runs close to $2/# here. I know I could cut the breast off the whole one and toss the rest or use it in casseroles or something but I don't like messing with something that big. I put the breast in the Nesco and it's delicious.

It depends on what temperature you are cooking it at. Mine took 1 3/4 hours at convection 300 degrees.

Well my turkey turned out ok although I think I did overcook it a little. I'd rather err on that side than the other. Paddy - 1 3/4 hours for a 7 pound turkey breast? Is that with a convection or regular oven? I have a convection roast setting on my oven but I didn't use it. I was going to but it's new and without the meat thermometer, I was afraid to. I will next time. Chase's 25 minutes per pound is closer to what I used - plus a little for good measure and it still wasn't dry. I guess everyone's oven is different though. My old one definitely got hotter than the new one I have now. I'm putting a meat thermometer on my list right now. : )

My two 8 pound turkey breasts were actually marked as weighing over 9 lbs each. The dumb gravy packets each weighed a tad over 10 oz each.
You know its not even turkey gravy but rather just a turkey broth with instructions to add meat drippings and flour.
I actually gave it to my dog.

I roasted at 425 for 30 minutes then I cut the heat and cooked at 350 for 1 3/4 hours till they registered 180 on the meat thermometer. I let them rest for 30 minutes befor carving. So thats over 2 hours cooking time.

By the way my turkey breasts were also free as I spent $300 at Acme and between DD and her room mates they too spent $300 at Acme so I was able to score both for free.
(BTW-myself, DD and now DS all work for Acme)

This week, turkey was on sale here at a local chain for 37 cents/lb with a 25 dollar purchase of other groceries, and usually the turkeys are 12 to 24 lbs.

At the same chain store, the butterball is 88 cents a lb and they weigh from 10 to 22 lbs.

...and the store also was offering Zacky Farms turkeys at $1.19 lb and weigh 10 to 22 lbs.

Whole turkey breasts at the same store are $2.18 lb but I'm not sure how much they weighed.

The cheapest whole, frozen turkeys here were 47-48 cents a pound. I bought a 24 pounder and a 12 pounder (froze the 12, made pies with the 24, had dinner at Dad's!).
