My turkey compost smells gross

In my defense, when I went out to the nursery there were piles upon piles of compost in varying stages of decay, and the stench of fresh manure was overwhelming. My scoop of compost came from a large pile, very dark and crumbly, more dry than moist.

Now that I have it home it stinks like a fish tank. Is this normal? It looks like loamy earth, no big hunks of anything identifiable. I'm so grossed out. BTW, when I shoveled it from the truck it had a strong smell of ammonia, which has dissipated. Even so, the fishy smell is overwhelming.

Is this normal for turkey compost or should I not use this on my garden beds?
