This just grosses me out, looks like some frothy fungal growth

Since this is where I usually post, and I was going to use this around my roses before I top dresssed with cypress mulch, I'll start here, maybe put a link over in the composting forum if no one knows.

I built these two bins, one larger (this one) and a smaller one. I went out a little bit ago picking up some sticks after digging dandelions and noticed this nasty stuff growing on top of my leaves, it is gross. What is worse there is red liquid that looks like blood oozing out of the depressions but doesn't appear to have the viscosity of blood. There's also some bubbly liquidy stuff forming as well. And there's a spot of yellow stuff that looks like a bird foot or egg yolk. I don't want to poke at it any more until I have an idea what to do.

Do I dare use this on my plants now? I don't turn the pile because it's too heavy work for me; the leaves underneath are sopping wet, and it's pretty deep with several cubic feet.

BTW this was almost full to the brim last fall, my son mulched the leaves for me with the lawn mower and used the catcher, so got a few grass clippings mixed in.

Any ideas, anyone? I'm afraid it might be toxic. I poked it a little with my dandelion weeder, and do have a call in to the extension service. It wasn't there a couple weeks ago because I saw a baby owl flopping around trying to climb the chicken wire. By the time I got my gloves and out there, the owl was flopping on the leaves and had its little claw caught in the mesh. I freed it and helped it scoot back up my huge tree, third year I've dealt with baby owls.

There is no sign of anything like this on my smaller bin on the east side of the house.

Surely this can't be that unique, but if it is, I would think the scientific community might be interested in analyzing it. You never know what could cure something - or kill you.

Compost forum or your state forum, it could be that stuff from mars that I had one year. It likes new mulch. That is usually when it appears.

Kimmsr, You are in no position to speak to me about the pursuit of knowledge. Those shoes don't fit you. I pointed you in the direction of the research, but you rejected it. (Of course there is much more research and many experts which agree with my position and none which support yours.) Yet you persist in the false belief that you are correct. To make matters worse, you share your false position with others without providing anything to support it when asked. So, who needs to pursue knowledge here? As to ants, they are welcome in my pile with the exception of Fire Ants. That is a personal decision I have made. The only reason that Fire Ants are not welcome is because they sting and cause very unpleasant physical responses. In some people, those reactions can actually be fatal. Ants contribute to the overall decomposition process, so why would they not be welcome? By the way, sarcasm is an excellent technique to use when making a point.

Hollywood is trying to appeal to a demographic that is under 30 - they spend way more money on movies than any other group, but they also have generational taste. A generation can be loosely defined by the transit of Uranus through a sign - that is generally seven years. For a broader definition - Neptune transiting through a sign takes 13-2/3 years, and Pluto's transit through a sign is so irregular that it is not appropriate to assign it to generations, although some people do anyway. Still, if someone is born with Uranus and Neptune in a different sign from yours, they will be considered to be in a different generation and have different taste. Your taste will be more in line with your own generation, and this has always generally been the case. I personally have not noticed a lot of vomiting in movies lately, but I'm fairly selective about what I will watch. Kevin gets a lot of screener DVDs from work, but we don't watch all of them. Some of them we will watch for maybe 15 minutes before deciding that they are not worth our time. We prefer to watch movies at home and generally wait for DVDs to come out. This week, however, we will have the opportunity to see a screening of He's Just Not That Into You on the Sony lot. It's not a Sony movie, but the other studio is lending it to Sony for the screening. I wanted to see that movie after seeing a clip of it on one of the late night TV shows. I've had no interest in seeing The Wrestler, and I also have no interest in seeing Slumdog Millionaire - but the latter mainly because I find the music so offensive. I walked out on Titantic because of its horrible music - those horrible vocals made my skin crawl. I'm more offended by bad music in movies than I am by vomiting. I can look away if I don't like what I'm seeing, but it is impossible to turn off bad music blaring so loudly in the background without also turning off the dialog. If I have the movie on DVD, I will turn on English subtitles and mute the sound when I hear bad music, however. As for TV shows - my new latest favorite is RuPaul's Drag Race, which is a parody of America's Next Top Model. It has some hysterically funny moments, and Bob Mackie was a guest judge on the first episode. The costumes and makeup are really amazing as well. We also have been watching the adventures of Mark and Olly, as they visit remote primeval villages, and there is a certain degree of vomiting and/or grossness in those, but I am especially interested in the adventures from an anthropological viewpoint. I've always been interested in anthropology and primitive cultures, and they have managed to visit quite a few so far. I've never seen Hell's Kitchen, but the title alone is enough to put me off. Great responses. Ohiomom... I remember when green and purple ketchup came out. We got the green version. I must have been 17 and I tried it on some scrambled eggs. It was TERRIBLE, even though I'm sure it had the exactly the same ingredients as the red stuff. I agree that presentation/appearance IS very important to the interpretation of taste. I think that it looks like something the dog ate and then reproduced. Sue, you must have the same cheese product. It isn't terrible. The best part of the meal was the tortilla chips (I want to go out and get some cheddar dip to finish them up, I never allow myself to buy chips at the grocery market so when someone else brings them it's a special treat). He apparently has a few vintage appliances (hair drier, coffee percolator, and alarm clock )so I was having fun showing off the vacuums... I thought the waffle iron would be a nice touch. I was wrong. Pancakes would have been much easier. I hate cleaning the waffle iron yet and wanted to put the entire thing in the dishwasher. If they would put removable platens on the the waffle irons and George Foreman grills (HATE, sorry, strongly disllike that thing!) it would be great. We did laugh a lot, and the waffles somehow got made and eaten AND enjoyed. Thanks for the advice, Woodie... where were ya last week? Too late now! Maryanne, I have heard of holding out. People actually do it? I'm brave enough to venture outside of my social shell maybe once every three or so months to meet a new guy and see what happens... I tend to make it "all or nothing" when I do. Usually all, unless their teeth are crooked. Thanks for appreciating my humor :o) I didn't even think of making a game out of it and having people guess! Found another pair that're old enough work. And ... I just thought. Old uncle had a pair that had the ribbing at the bottom cut, that I wasn't much interested in ... but I don't think that I threw them out. Maybe I can find them. Another problem: the three-month old catheter blocked on Monday, so I had it replaced, and last night there was leakage. Usually that means that there's been a disconnect ... but the connection was in good order. They'd installed a tube with three pipes, and the two extras are always non-operational, except by the experts. But ... one of these had leaked! I'd made a small sliver of wood, ready to whittle into being round, to fit into one of those holes in a set of shelves where one installs a small holder to vary the level of the removable shelves. I was able to find it ... and it seemed to be a good size to fit into the tube. I thought that all was in order ... but soon it began to leak a little. Pushed it in further. Seems to be holding. Stopped at a golf course en route to the library today, seeking a "T", that I thought should be about the right size - and they're tapered! The gold (read "golf", please) shop was all locked up! In this life ... you win some ... and you lose some. Seems to be holding - so far! And... don't tell me, please - that ... I'm ... all ... wet! I'm NOT! (At the moment)). ole joyful

The extension service called me back and told me what it was. Once I knew what to google on, there is a lot about it on the web (and some threads here but not the composting forum where I really ought to have posted it, don't know any people there).

You people are on the ball though I must say.

Anyway, I just hope it goes away soon as I don't even want to breathe it, but I guess it's harmless. It's supposed to stink but I didn't detect any odor. Thanks for the link. I found an even more comprehensive one.

Oh well, maybe it will be good if people here find out about it if they didn't already know. About 2/3 of the way down at the link I'm providing, is a specimen that looks identical to the stage mine's at.

I saw they are using it to control a robot. The curious part of me wonders what that red oozy stuff might be useful for.

I would have rather started a thread about my 2 RDV roses that is on their way, don't know where I'm going to put them, every spot is spoken for lol.

At least, it's not THE Blob (circa 1988). Or choose the 1958 version, if you prefer. Either one is scary enough.

I won't blame anyone from thinking that it is waste material ejected by alien space crafts.

cactus, lol. I'm not drawn to those kinds of movies, but did like the Birds way back when. I have enough blobby stuff to deal with, remember my first encounter with a jellyfish, thought they were cool, none "bonded with me".

buford, I knew just what I was going to see heh. Stinkhorn. Only once in the almost 40 years I've lived here have I had that, and it is gross, too. Yours is especially gross, they seem to vary. Mine was more slender and erectile, but I'm usually curious about anomalies in nature.

Oh yes, the owls. Well I was relieved I had just the one encounter this year. They are adorable, quite docile when they get used to you, and a worry. One ornery one got in the street last year. It was like a circus around here for a few days, lotsa photos, it's pitiful watching them maintain a vigil in a bush where you have put them to keep them off the ground waiting for their parents to come, and the wildlife people won't let you feed them. I just love the sound of them, usually at night. We have a lot, barred owls, not on the endangered species list. This isn't the one I won on but is a nice closeup, was down on my stomach to get it, the one I won on is offloaded to my external hd. Have won quite a bit now, one on a baby chickadee, had never seen a baby one in my life. Right now one of my pelican shots is in a new magazine. I need to get back to photography, this gardening has me flumoxxed right now, trying to do too much.

I get that slime mold on my mulch here and there. It goes away after a while. I just cover it up or peel it off and toss it somewhere out of sight.

Buford, the link is very interesting: thanks for sharing! I think I've seen the stinky squid stinkhorn or a close relative; I always wondered what the thing was. This was in Florida, the southeast as the fungus site says.

I wish I'd have thought of that name for it, ET. Cute! There's always a lingering sadness when they have gone away, wondering if they are going to make it.

Thanks for the compliment on the photo.

This AM I went out and there was a yellow patch of the slime forming, just now I look at it and it is turning brown and bready whereas the other patch has lots of blackish spots now. We're having a lot of rain. I won't worry about the stuff until I need some leaves out of there in which case I will toss it behind the garage or something, don't want that stuff in my garbage cart. Maybe those chickenwire bins weren't such a good idea because the big one will have killed the grass, but that might save me a lot of hauling and some money for all the mulch and composty stuff I'm going to need.
