Fall Decorating question and my Turkey Hunt

I am getting really anxious to start decorating for Fall, even tho it will stay 100 degrees here till end of Oct. (Our Fall is actually winter for most of you. We really don't have Winter in Phoenix.) Anyway, in spite of me having quite a few fall decorations, I've never had much in the way of turkey stuff. And seems this year I've gotten a bit obsessed with adding some. I'm always on the look for Holiday things all year long, Goodwill especially puts out stuff cheap during the summer! And I've made some great buys. The two big Turkey platters were made in Portugal, they are identical except one is white and one is green. I found them at different times at GW, and on half off days, so paid $5 each for them.

I also found some more Nutcrackers and the white w gold trim Xmas figures (Mikasa) for my collections.

The Nutcrackers were a great find, Goodwill and half off day. They are 15", so pretty big, and I paid just a couple of dollars EACH for them! The two Xmas figurines came from eBay.

The first 11 photos are things I've bought the last few months. But my question is....

do I have to wait till close to Thanksgiving to put out my turkeys or would they look ok with my Fall decorating next week when I start doing it? (I have my rooster plates and figures in my kitchen and I thought I'd replace them with the turkeys!)

Gosh, Karen, they're wonderful and such bargains!!! I'm especially lusting after those individual turkey plates that you have pctured before the turkey platters. Can you tell me more about them? As for when you should put them all out, I say go for it! Autumn's the time for harvests, pumpkins, pinecones and leaves . . . and turkeys, too.
Don't forget to show us pics when your decs are up, OK?

Thanks Lynn. I kept haunting eBay for those Turkey plates as I specifically wanted those 3. The two are by Johnson Brothers and the other is Queen's Myott.There is another I want, Spode's Woodland Turkey. But its been more than I want to pay with shipping, so I keep looking for a bargain on it.

Oh, Lynn, I forgot to answer you. I have Whippets. 7 of them. They look same as greyhounds basically, just half the size. I've been showing them for over 35 yrs. There's a link to an album of my dogs and cats on my front page at Photobucket. I haven't been able to show the last two years, so may have been forced into retiring thanks to the Fibromyalgia. But all the Whippets are spoiled rotten pets any way. LOL. And I have a huge collection of statues, over 300 in all. I've been collecting them for 30 yrs. Melvalena (what a PRETTY name!), can you drape some Fall garland around your cabinet? I have a small bowl with little faux pumpkins and gourds on back of my toilet, and two little orange candles. It just adds some color there. Betty, the ting ting comes in a cellophane bundle at Michaels, and sometimes Dollar Tree has it I think. It just adds a little extra to any floral arrangement. At Xmas you can find it in gold or silver and sparkly. hugs, Karen

Thanks, Gang. I really appreciate everything you say. About the speckled pumpkin, yes it is ceramic. I found it last year at Joann's on sale. OA, the glitter pumpkins in the apothecary jar aren't ornaments, just table decorations. The "spotty glasses" are cute by the way. Jeanne, I don't like using glitter either but I learned two things. First one, do it outside. LOL. I usually take a shallow box, to catch the excess glitter and reuse it, and hold the item over it or sit it in the box. Also, a gal told me to put glitter in a salt shaker as it gives good control. Truthfully, I rather BUY glittered stuff. LOL. I remembered this morning, thank goodness, that I'd bought a Pilgrim Nutcracker months ago. So got him out of my closet and he's now next to the new tall apothecary jar. I also felt the green turkey on the kitchen counter was lacking, so added a slim little green vase of colorful faux mums to her and the Dollar Tree platter arrangement. hugs, Karen who's still trying to find a place for her 4 S&P turkey sets!!

Jeanne, all of your fall decor is wonderful. I'm always ready to see your Jewel Tea 'Autumn Leaf' Hall China collection. You have so many neat pieces. I sure wish the set I found this summer would of been priced more reasonable and I would of brought it home.LOL The 'countertop island' is so prety all decorated and lit up. Is that a decorative bread loaf pan? Love that the napkins look like they belong to your Jewel Tea china. Isn't it fun to have more turkeys, acorns, candles and Stuff to play with now? I think back and my decor was pretty lame years ago but I still loved it.haha Thanks for sharing. Punk

OMGosh, where do I start.... The little wood pilgrims you made are adorable, and that turkey with them is soooo cute. I like the simplicity. But then there are your other turkeys! The handled one really grabbed my attention!!! Lynn's decorated cornucopia, and that super sweet bunny, must have had you feeling like it was Christmas already!! What a great friend she is to do something so special. The acorn mugs from Betty are wonderful. I sure wish she would come back here. I think of her (and Alfred) so often and hope they are doing okay. Such a special couple and they deserve the best. I sure hope DH doesn't start counting your acorns! LOL. My MIL used turkey plates every year for Thanksgiving. When she moved out of state, our son (then about 8) told her he would miss her and the plates. Just before Thankgsgiving that year we received 4 turkey plates (we are a small family of 3) in the mail. She said she had gotten them at the local Five and Dime for 50 cents each in 1947 (year my DH was born) after the war, they were made in Japan. Since no one had ever mentioned to her their love for the plates and our son did, she sent them to him with a very nice letter explaining the history of the plates. Shortly after, she passed away. My SIL settled the estate and our son received a box containing his inheritance per his grandmother's will - the remaining plates - 30 in all. So this year we will again be using our 24 year old son's 62 year old plates for our dinner. He has agreed to leave 4 for my hub and me when he moves out.

Karen, one platter looks like a raised design and the other is indented, right? They are both gorgeous. I say use them as your Fall/Holiday decor--they will look gorgeous anywhere you display them. ;o) Love the plates too, especially your rooster ones and your cobalt blue ones!

Swest, what a great story about the turkey plates. I'll bet you MIL was thrilled that your son liked her plates. When I worked at a little antique/collectibles store, so many customers said their kids were not at all interested in their collectibles and they feared they would all end up at the TS or worse yet, the dump, when they passed on! Guess that's why some older people like to divy things up to the younger family members while they are still alive and able to see the pleasure their treasure bring to someone else.

I love your fall buys! I have been trying to collect turkeys but it's hard to find good things. I do have a few figurines and salt-and-peppers but I love the plates. I'm still looking.

Can't wait to see you put them together.

Luvs, the platters are identical except for color. The turkeys and designs are all raised. Hard to photograph them properly.

What a wonderful story about your son and MIL's turkey plates,swest. Very heart-warming.

Here's a link to look at all the neat turkey plates on eBay if any of you want to browse. I always love looking at stuff on eBay, tho really don't buy that often.

If anyone is interested in the Queen's Myott Turkey Plates...they have them in TJMAX.. I was there today, and they have them in the Dinner Plates 4/$12.99.and....Side Plates 4/$9.99...In three colors. Brown...Brown/w/Color and Blue & White.

Karen...I love your platters and plates. You got such fantastic prices for them. I've been eyeing those Johnson Bro Turkey Plates and also the ones from Spode Woodland collection...
I too have been checking Ebay for them and agree, they've been a bit pricy.
As far as you putting out your Turkeys now...I would for sure...I agree w/Lynn...it's Fall and turkeys are a part of it. I too say ... Go For It.
I'm looking forward to seeing you post some pictures when they're all set up.

Suewest... What a wonderful memory and special treasure for your Son. Also, what a Special woman your MIL was, to think of him in such a special way. It must have made her heart feel so good knowing she was setting them aside for him, to use one day. I'm sure she was smiling, knowing that he would carry on her 'Tradition'.

Wow! You got some bargains, I love your turkey things. I'm certainly not an expert, but to me, turkeys, and pheasants are very fall like, and I would use them in fall decorating. Maybe not everything, but I think those plates and platters will look great.

Slinkey, I've been wanting to go to TJ Maxx for a long time.
I just have such a problem with being able to drive AND walk a store then drive home. My right leg is my biggest Fibro problem. Plus the past month, I haven't been able to leave my Dad at all. Tho now I think I can for an hour or two. So maybe I'll try going there soon if I have a half-way decent day with the pain issues. My mind is willing but I think my body is self-destructing. LOL

I thought it was the Myott that came in the colored like mine as well blue, brown, and PINK for all you Pinkies out there. (where's Judith? Our biggest Pinkie has been missing for so long. So has Jim. I sure miss them a lot)

Great turkey plates/platters, Karen! I'm all for putting out turkey stuff early....just pretend you are living in Canada where Thanksgiving is Oct.12th this year. Because our TG is early in fall, it doesn't seem strange to me at all! I sure hope your health improves enough that you can get out and do some fall decor shopping, I feel bad for you!

Suewest, what a lovely story! I am so impressed that it was a "son" who would notice the plates! Just shows, dishes aren't just special to women!

WOW Karen, you are just turkeying right along...those plates are beautiful! I would like to find some serving pieces with the turkeys, but we don't have a TJM store anywhere around :^(

My daughter told me she saw the Myott turkey plates at Home Goods. I told her how dare she go there without me! LOL.
Its on the other side of town and I rarely get to go. She was out that way on a business meeting so stopped to shop.
Tho she didn't buy anything but clothes. WHAT is wrong with that girl???? LOL.

Happened to be near a Marshall's yesterday so went in to look a bit. They had three different patterns of turkey plates in case anyone else is looking. They are really pretty, just wish I had more storage space! Luvs

Swest, I remember you posting about your son and the Turkey plates last year! And I've been away from the forum for a good nine months, but I thought that was touching! As a matter of fact I was at Tuesday Morning and saw an adorable Spode dinner plate of a cowboy on a horse with six shooters lining the rim and I bought it for MY grandson and I don't even have a grandson! Guess I'm back on the right forum!

And purplemoon, I was going to mention that I saw a couple of Turkey dinner plates at Tuesday Morning. I believe they were Spode. Spode is very detailed, right? Sort of like paper money? I just knew I should have picked them up but there were only two. But now I think they would make good kids plates for Thanksgiving....if I ever get two grandchildren!

Thanks for the tip, Neesie. Too funny you bought your 'invisible' grandson a plate! That is GREAT. I'd have loved that myself as a child, anything with a horse and cowboy was right up my alley. No girly stuff for me,
which explains my dish retardation. LOL.

Karen, the turkey dishes are gorgeous ! If you get the Victorian Trading Co. catalog, there are some really nice turkey items in the new fall catalog, including an adorable little orange turkey lamp ! Lots of other fall and Halloween decs also.
