I think it is about a foot too long. It's a shame the shorter piece can't project into the room and the longer go against the wall. If you are ordering new, can they reverse the lengths?

I think it's fine if you have room to put a sofa table behind it. (That would be your substitute coffee table/place to set things down.)

I think it's perfectly fine. Mine is smashed in, too (don't even ask how I got it into this room...it was an ordeal). I even have a similar giant map!

(Ignore my missing cushion covers. They were in the wash when I took the one photo. I have the Thomasville Mercer with scoop arm and exposed wedge legs. from corner to edge, it's 99", and it's a deep sofa at 40".)

Yes, the sides are supposed to be even. I think it's an artifact of the bad / weird camera angles that make them look different lengths.

If I put a sofa table behind the sofa I worry that there won't be much space between the front edge of the sectional and the accent chair.

Maybe I will ask if they have a version that would be longer on one side than the other. I could see an L shaped sectional that was 1' narrower and 1' longer being a better fit.

I have grown to love smallish rooms with a sectional. I was going to go that route in this LR (11' x 23) and chickened out last minute. I very much regret it and will (eventually) put a sectional in my similarly sized room in the new house.

Kevin's photos really do a good job of showing how comfortable and intimate they can be in the space... and also shows that sectional design has come a long way from the basement rec room sectionals of our youth (ahem.. ok, your youth.. and my young adulthood!)

I would like to see a coffee table of some sort.. the slightly reduced seat depth would help.

Are all of the proportions the same as the actual sofa? If so, I would live with your faux version for a week if you can manage! Then, get your "first impression" as you come into the room. If you get used to it, it wins . ..if not, then no.

In our last house, we bought the 2 huge chairs (and sofa, and LR) even though I KNEW before we bought them that they would be way too big and overpower the room. I knew, but DH was in the mood to get furniture and that does not happen very often, so I just got them with the plan that "someday" we would be moving. Well, as you've seen in my pic, our new LR is still very narrow and they are still too big!

I am trying to listen to my "no, no, no" voice instead of constantly settling because I just want to be done. If your voice is saying yes, go for it!

Sorry to be the party-pooper, but I think it is too large, especially the end that extends out into the room. But then again, it depends on what you are going to do in the room. Is it strictly a TV room or a room where you will just relax and converse? It seems to overpower the darling chair. You've received some good advice already about 'living' with the configuration you've set up, and I can't add enough to that.

Agree. Way too big. It suffocates the room. It's one thing to stuff a sectional in the corner of a small house, but quite another to have a huge arm sticking out into the room and blocking access. Look to do a shorter arm, a chaise end or a different solution entirely.

I think Kevin's works because it wraps the walls. Something like a sofa with a projecting chaise piece might work better in your case since just the seat, and not a back and outside arm, would project into the space.

Agree with the posters who say that a sectional hugging the wall is quite different from one that sticks out. I had a similar set-up as you propose and was always bothered by the "wall" (your last photo).

We have a sectional that we bought for the basement of our last house and I loved it there because It fit the spot perfectly but now I hate the thing because I can't seem to make it work in our current family room. Just keep this in mind if you plan on moving.

If the section that is not against the wall were to have something like half of it be backless, or with a shorter back, it might reduce the visual massiveness of the piece. I'm not sure whether that could create an obstacle to movement, e.g. tripping or knee banging hazard.

I still like it.. and the coziness.. but the one thing I didnt consider last night is that left arm really does block entrance to the room. While both my LRs are similar size to yours, the plans for the sectional don't inhibit entry to the center of the room. Whether that would bother you is really a matter of how you'd use the room-- but I am always getting up to check the oven or get a drink or whatever.. and a clear shot to the kitchen would be key.

That said, I may be the only person in the world who hates chaise sectionals, but I do. I think a shorter left section would be a good compromise.

Your mock up is brilliant! I think the proposed sectional is much too big for the room. I feel like it cramps an already cramped front entry and closes the room off from that entry. And if there were people using all of the seats, there would be very little room to navigate through the room. I also think it overpowers the room visually. I've spent considerable time in a house with this treatment and I HATE walking along that "wall" of the sectional every time I want to go in or out of the room.

The question is, what is the function of the room? If you need this amount of seating, that may over ride the negatives. But whether your goal is to seat six people in the room or to allow two people to watch TV lying down, I think there are much better ways to do it than this.

We have a similar room - long and skinny with the fireplace at the end. We tried all kinds of configurations of furniture, including a sectional (my house was a rotating gallery of craigslist finds for a while) and settled on 2 identical sofas placed along the side walls. They face each other for good conversation and there's a coffee table in the middle. It's still not great but I think it was the best I could do given the room layout.

The function of the room is reading, watching the fireplace, and a place to talk away from the giant TV that looms over the family room. In the summer it would be reading when it's too hot or too buggy on the porch.

We used to have two sofas that sat across from each other (one under the window & the other on the long wall). It felt like a subway car in there ;) And there was no good angle to sit and watch the fire without turning my head 90 degrees, which just gave me a neck cramp after 5 min.

That said, I think I need to change the sectional to be a shorter piece projecting into the room & a longer piece on the wall. You guys are right. The "wall of sofa" will become annoying and if I have a "one butt" side of the sectional there I can fit a narrow end table next to it.

I bet if I do that, I can also pull the sofa into the room a bit more. And that might give me room for a sofa table behind it, without intruding into the walkspace. I hope that doesn't become a launching platform for the cat ... but maybe she'll be happy to sit on the stairs and judge us from there (I really do love my cat, I shouldn't be so honest about her).

What will this room be used for? Do you really need all that seating? One man's 'coziness' is another man's 'cramped', but that of course is a matter of personal taste and comfort. I'd rather a small sofa and comfortable armchair for reading as it appears to be a sitting room rather than one that would have a lot of people at one time.

I must have been typing and posting when you told us the use of the room, EC. It is to be used for what I suspected. Glad you decided on something smaller, though I still would like a comfortable armchair or recliner.

Based on the planned use of the room, I would use a super comfy loveseat, with low enough arms to lay on it if you want, centered across from and facing the fireplace. I would add at least one comfy chair that swivels and have it face the loveseat. I'd have a common ottoman/table in the center of the room.

Pulling the sectional out further into the room will only waste space. The end of the "furniture wall" is not a good place for an end table, though you might put a very small accent piece there.

It sounds like you really want a sectional in there for some reason. You don't say if you've ever had a sectional before. Have you thought about using the two loveseat sections and leaving out the corner piece (which people don't usually find comfortable) so you can walk into the room through that opening?

How important is a coffee table to you? If I read orrectly you wouldn't be able to fit a coffee table in the room w/ thelarger sectional.

I think the length of each side would be fine. You look like you still have a nice walkway into the room. My biggest concern would be the overall DEPTH of the furniture. If it is deep, like 40 inches ++ deep, it will take up even more of your space in the middle.

I have small living room and have been looking for a sectional for the last 2 years or so. I finally have on one order from Macys. The line is considered "apartment" size so the furniture isn't as big as the average furniture. Even so, I'm still crossing my fingers!!

Sorry, I had to work til 8 last night and didn't re-arrange the faux sectional pieces yet. Tonight I'm meeting a friend after work, so I won't be able to try out another configuration until Thursday.

But the more I walk by this one, the more I don't like it. It makes the room feel off balance and it just doesn't feel like it fits. I think a square sectional is not the answer.

We have a similar config at the lake we bought last year and I love it. Great reading and sleeping spot! If you go with something custom, you can make it whatever you want, but it'll be pricey. When I planned my sofa, I used the corner and two armed love seat sections. You could use a corner, an armed sofa section along the wall, and either an armed chair section along the opening, or you could use an armed sofa section along the wall and an an armed chaise instead of the corner (that would be cheaper two: 2 pieces is cheaper than 3 pieces. Then you could just get a tufted leather ottoman for the center so that people can just put their feet up (that's why I had glass put on my antique coffee table above--to make it a footrest).

This room is used the most in the fall & winter. I was thinking sectional sofa because it would give space for laying down and sitting. When we have people over, it's nice to have a conversation grouping but when it's just us and the dog a sectional seems like it allows for more lazy lounging.

I like the look of this, it just needs to swap which side gets the long versus short piece:

So it would be a corner + 1 arm chair piece + 1 loveseat piece. I need to find out if these pieces can fit into the dimensions on the plan (sectional on the floor plan is 6' by 7'8", or 72" x 92").

I like the corner piece on this style because it has a teeny bit of leg room. I don't think it's enough leg room that someone would sit there and hang their legs down, but if you are sitting on either side of the corner you aren't fighting for foot space as much. I think/hope it works out that way, at least.

The picture you chose shows a wedge, not a corner, so make sure you don't do the wedge. They're even more obtrusive.

Really? No wedges? Hmmm, that was a feature I liked because it put a little distance between the feet of the people sitting on the seat cushions next to the wedge. And I figured the wedge would be a favorite place for the dog to curl up.

Do you mean that a sectional with a wedge is typically larger than a sectional without a wedge (assuming the same number of seats per side & width per seat)?

It likely depends on the wedge, but a lot of the wedges I've seen do not fit wall to wall in the corner; rather, they have a diagonal back. And they always take up more space and are much harder to move (it would have never made it into my house, let alone up to the second floor)--with my style of sofa, it's like this:

Those wedge shapes have more seating area than the straight 90' angle sectional. That's a good feature if you can find one that fits.
