Hawaiian Roll Sliders...

I found a good recipe and I wanted to share it with you... I go to a sit and sew every other Friday and we all bring a dish to share. One of the ladies brought something the last time that just blew me away. I'd never even heard of this and when I got home, I googled it and it's actually a "thing"... not something this lady invented!

Anyway, the item is called a Hawaiian Roll Slider and it is basically just ham and Swiss cheese on Hawaiian rolls. But, the magic happens when you make the sauce and drizzle/pour it all over the rolls and then bake it in the oven. When the savory sauce melds with the sweetness of the Hawaiian rolls, the result is a bit of heaven.

People who are health conscious wouldn't want to eat like this every day, but for something like a pot luck, this is wonderful!

My grandmother's funeral was last Friday and I made these to bring for the wake... there were no leftovers.

This is more assembling and than real cooking, but still, a great and simple thing to take to events. I wonder how long I've been in the dark about this!

These quilting ladies are really making me step up my game in the kitchen... nobody at work or in my family is what I would consider a real cook so I'm used to being the best cook I know in my "circles"... Not anymore! The challenge is fun though. (Making carrot cake cookies for tomorrow... did flan the last time and sausage meatballs the time before that)...

Anyway, I'm done digressing... the recipe I'm speaking of is linked below. When I made it, I omitted the poppy seeds because I wasn't going to buy them just for one recipe and never use them again. All the recipes I've read for these are pretty similar, though some have you use provolone instead of swiss cheese and others add brown sugar to the sauce.

Bobby, I'm very sorry for your loss.

I wasn't sure what to expect from your description, but after looking at the picture, I can see why there were no leftovers. That looks very, very good.

Raven, I serve them right out of the oven, so they aren't soggy--a little gooey maybe, with the melted cheese. You don't have to use all the butter mixture, but I do. Here's the recipe: HAM AND CHEESE SLIDERS 24 good white dinner rolls 24 pieces good honey ham 24 small slices Swiss cheese (I used Provolone) 1/3 cup mayonnaise (I only used mayo--no miracle whip and didnÃ¢ÂÂt measure. Just slathered on.) 1/3 cup miracle whip Poppy seed sauce (see Note below) 1 Tablespoon poppy seeds (See Note below) 1 1/2 Tablespoons yellow mustard (I use Dijon) 1/2 cup butter, melted 1 Tablespoon minced onion (I didnÃ¢ÂÂt use) 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Note: Next time I will leave out the poppy seeds and sprinkle them over the top after I pour the sauce over the sandwiches. They tended to Ã¢ÂÂclump upÃ¢ÂÂ, In fact, I think I'll leave them out all together--they don't add much to the recipe. In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise and miracle whip. Spread onto both sides of the center of each roll. Place a slice of ham and a slice of Swiss inside of each roll. Close rolls and place them into a large baking dish or heavy cookie sheet. Place very close together. In a medium bowl, whisk together all of the poppy seed sauce ingredients. Pour evenly over all of the sandwiches. You do not have to use all of the sauce! Just use enough to cover the tops. Let sit 10 minutes or until butter sets slightly. Cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until cheese is melted. Uncover and cook for 2 additional minutes or until tops are slightly brown and crispy. Serve warm. Note: Sandwiches can be assembled a day ahead and kept in the fridge ready to bake.

LOL DH is loving his new bread machine! He makes the dough in the machine & then shapes, rises, & bakes according to his desire. I don't think physically I can type an entire recipe but most everybody here knows the basics for bread so here's what we used... 1 Egg slightly beaten (room temp) Water added to beaten egg to equal 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 cups (water around 90-95 degrees) 2 Teaspoons Sugar 2 Teaspoons Salt 1/3 Cup Dry Milk Powder 3 Tablespoons olive oil 1-1/2 Cups Extra Sharp Cheddar (Cabot Private Reserve) 4 Cups unbleached bread flour 1-1/2 Teaspoons yeast This made 2 pounds of dough (24 slider rolls). We baked on parchment-lined baking sheet at 350 degrees for 22 minutes. Oh, they were brushed with melted butter prior to baking. After shaping, he let them rise 30 minutes (inside the oven with a bowl of hot water & the oven light on). Don't forget to remove them from the oven when you're preheating! Just to respond to myself...I found out he uses a local glass co. with a good rep.-which makes me feel much better. Still considering using him vs. going with fleetwood. But I think my question is answered. It will come down to if I can lift and slide arcadias or possibly folding sliders and who has the best price if so.

Just to report back .... graduation was this evening. I gave her the lei this afternoon, and she was thrilled, but her mother reports that it was The Coolest Thing Ever among her classmates. There were some other Asian kids with leis (didn't say if fake or real), but only one money lei. I futzed around with technique and styles a bit, which left me running to the craft stores for the right ribbons, etc. But it all came together pretty easily, and it was a hit!

Oh, something I can respond to!! These have been around for ages in the south. They are called Wedding Reception Ham Delights and long before sliders, were made with Pepperidge Farm Party Rolls. Poppy seeds are a must. :)

I saw the recipe on Pinterest and had to try them. I've made them twice since. They're great for a group. I found it better to sprinkle the poppy seeds on top of the buns after the sauce is on because the seemed to clump up in all that butter/mustard lusciousness. I've used different cheese, too. It's all good! Also, I used little Vienna rolls because I thought the Hawaiian would be too sweet. I'll try them next time. BTW, they are also called "funeral sandwiches" on some recipes because people do take them to homes when there is a death in the family.

It just may be my favorite sandwich!

I think I've heard of these before (maybe even on here?) but never made them. My daughter's birthday is coming up in a couple weeks. She's having some friends over around lunch time & some family will be coming as well. She wants pizza, but I would like to have another option for the older adults. These sounds like a great idea - what do you think a couple of the very best sides would be to go with them? Thanks.

Thanks for the recipe, too, I'm going to pass it on to Makayla. It sounds like something she would like and she'd be able to make it herself in the toaster oven, I'll bet. She LOVES ham and cheese sandwiches.

Thanks everyone... I miss her, but I began the grieving process when she was diagnosed in February so I've had a while to process this and I knew it was coming well before it did.

I'm glad I inspired a few of you to try these rolls because if you've never had them, you can't possibly imagine how wonderful they are :o)
