Hang Ten: Laid Back Surfer Style

Houzz Contributor. Hi there! I live in a 1940s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia.

Hang Ten or Hanging Ten:
1. To ride with ten toes over the nose of the board, a very stylish an very difficult longboard move.
2. Hanging ten feet from the shore because the waves are really scary.
I am definitely more of the second meaning type. I would add to it, watching surf movies that have really good soundtracks. I recently became smitten with The Surf Lodge in Montauk ( http://www.thesurflodge.com/) and it got me thinking about surfer style. While one of my favorite surfer dude images is of Sean Penn and Eric Stoltz rolling out of a VW bus in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," surfer-inspired style now ranges from relaxed shacky comfort to Polynesian chic.
Whether it's a casual hammock, a hanging chair, a kitchen counter made from a surfboard or a great view of those catching a killer wave, there are many bodacious aspects of the surfing lifestyle that can inspire your style. Let me know if you see any I've missed.
ADDED LATER: I found the surfboard island in a green design feature in Cottage Living Magazine! Hooray. I have no idea about permissions to post it here, so here's a link:

A thatched tiki-style roof, a comfortable conversation pit, & the sound of the surf lapping the shore.
Ocean-inspired colors, natural materials and a lava lamp add a little relaxation to this workspace area.
Mosquito nets, wooden retro furnishings, and only a mosquito net and roof to separate one from the tropical environment.
Paddles serve as artwork here.
Here, the boards require no storage, as they add to the decor of this brightly colored room.
Tropical flowers and ethnic-looking prints contribute to a tropical, relaxed lifestyle at home.
Artwork and tropical wood complete a South Pacific vibe.
This snag at The Surf Lodge is actually the support for a very necessary surf area - the outdoor shower.
Lifeguard shack-style numerals and a mini-boardwalk path add to the appeal of room entry at The Surf Lodge.
Ocean colors of blue, green, and sand recall the beach.
The ultimate abode for Bodhi - he just needs to rob a few more banks.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, go rent this now!

Don't forget the landscape: Orchids and waterfalls complete a beautiful Hawaiian look here.
The next few shots have absolutely killer views that make you want to paddle out.
