Comments (3)We have a big skylight (about 10' x 17') that cooks our house in the summertime. We moved in toward the end of the summer last year so just dealt with it. But we have to do something. I investigated the tints, and there are some very good ones out there now that provide UV protection and are not visible -- much improved from the old metallic-looking films of years past. But what I found was that the DIY films you can buy at the big box stores are not of the same quality as those you purchase from pros who also do the install. The pro stuff can be pricy. 3M makes good films, and I can't remember the other big company. For my skylight, I came across a company that makes UV-protection-fabric screens that slip on over the skylight. I can get one of those made for about $700 and the pricing for the film/install was going to be about $2,000. Unfortunately, I don't think that helps you with your vertical surfaces. I like the idea of the panels. If I'm thinking of the same thing, IKEA has them. You have to be able to install a track, and the panels are about 18-24" wide and can be patterned or plain. You may be able to compromise by doing the lower windows and film on the upper wedge-shaped windows....See MoreDoes anyone use curtains only rather than shades/blinds etc.
Comments (20)Good fabric, good interlining and lining and one has a curtain that will last more than 30 years and still look good. Obviously, if one is of the "I like change and often" school of decorating, it would be madness to spend a lot on curtains. I've always been an "investment decorating" kind of gal. If I love a fabric, I will love it for decades. I don't change things just for the sake of change - why would I if I love what I did in the first place? The DR curtains I replaced (and still loved!) were made in 1985. They lasted until 2016. The cream background had yellowed on the valances and I couldn't just remove them due to festoon blinds underneath and valance boards, whose removal would have destroyed the wallpaper, long discontinued. Didn't want to get into that! But oh, I loved those curtains - pretties ones I've ever had. I would used the same fabric again but it's now printed in the Far East, not in the UK, and it just doesn't look the same. Plus the trim has become prohibitively expensive. I went with another Colefax and Fowler fabric and the only trim is a fabric trim on the bottom of the valance, which is also simpler. They're lovely but they don't make my heart sing the way the old ones did - they were once-in-a-lifetime curtains. Grapefruit, I would agree that very few people today are willing to spring for lovely custom curtains - even wealthy people. They're a huge investment and most people today prefer change or what they see on TV, regardless of their wealth. But curtains can make a room, and if the headings are done properly, they can move from one house to another. It's really all about whether one is looking for trendy or timeless....See MoreMixing white wood blinds with woven wood shades in same rooM
Comments (7)I can't answer your question regarding what the OP did, amn4783, but it's more important to have the window treatments inside the room be compatible than thinking about the outside. If you want woven wood shades in the dining room, do them on all the windows, but use a white privacy liner. That way your interior is cohesive, but so is the outside since from the outside you see white on all the windows....See MoreWhat type of curtains/blinds/shades can I use here, and here and here?
Comments (10)Wow, that was a harsh response. Does it matter who designed/built this house? Keep in mind this is someone's home and by the few pictures shown I'm betting their dream home. mjammjam since window treatments are quite expensive and should be thought out, I'd go to Lowe's/Home Depot and grab the temporary paper shades for the windows where you need the most privacy. It will buy you some time while you figure this out. I think in your dining room you could still use curtains but the rod would have to be centered in that small strip of wall between moldings. You'd want the curtains hug wide to the sides so that when open they just meet the side moldings so your trim shows. I'm assuming you don't want to cover it up. But certainly you could use decorative Roman shades - that would be lovely, too. Your slider is very tricky and I think any type of shade is going to be problematic from a convenience standpoint. What comes to my mind is a curtain (would have to be hung from the ceiling I believe) that draws to the right over the stationary part of the door. When fully open it will still cover some of that glass but I can't see a way to avoid that. Then something simple with a slim profile hung as an inset mount on the side windows - it appears there is room for something like a cellular. Not sure if silhouettes have a slim enough profile. Same with your LR windows. Not sure what the last picture is about. Think this through - if you don't have furniture yet, whatever you choose for your windows will drive what you do there especially if you choose fabric roman shades or curtains with color and pattern....See Morepearlandgirl
