Best Antivirus Program for My Situation?

I finally couldn't take it any longer and uninstalled AVG. I'm one of the few still left that live in a rural location with no broadband options available. I use an air card, which is better than just dial-up, but far from a real broadband connection. I had had AVG 2011 for about a month, and just couldn't tolerate it another day. Yesterday it took 9 minutes just to open my e-mail program, and I don't mean 9 minutes to get my e-mail, but just to open the program. It took another 25 minutes to get my e-mail. It had rendered the internet useless for me.

Unfortunately I think all programs are probably now geared toward those with high-speed connections only and are way too robust for someone in my situation. But in the off chance that someone knows of a program that would work with my situation, I would love to hear from you. While I've never gotten a virus in over 16 years of use, I would still feel better having some protection, but not if I can't even use the internet anymore.

Microsoft Security Essentials may be a little better for you, download it to the desktop from the link below, don't double click the set up file just yet.

Once you have the set up file for Microsoft Security Essentials, visit the link below and download the AVG REMOVER choose the 32 bit or 64 bit according to your system.

AVG Remover eliminates all the parts of your AVG installation from your computer, including registry items, installation files, user files, etc.

Once the AVG remover has done it's work you can now double click the Microsoft Security Essentials set up file and proceed to install it.

Once those steps are complete, run the temp file cleaner following the instructions below:

Clean out your temporary internet files and temp files.

Download TFC by OldTimer click Here to your desktop. Click the Save file tab, save it to the desktop. Then double click it to run it.

Double-clickTFC.exe to run it.

Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator

TFC will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin

* Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process.
* Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two.
* Please let TFC run uninterrupted until it is finished.

Once TFC is finished it should restart your computer. If it does not, please manually restart the computer yourself to ensure a complete cleaning.

Please re-post after you make the change. If you still have slowness issues after following zep's instructions, then you may have another problem which is unrelated to the AV program you are using.

I'm going to hijack your thread for just a bit, Glenn, and provide some Yacon information. Yacon is a tender perennial related closely to dahlias and sunflowers. It's native to middle elevations in the Andes from Chile to Equador. I grew it for the first time this year. Plants look sort of like a Jerusalem Artichoke with wide, spade-shaped hairy leaves. They get small, yellowish sunflower-like blooms in the autumn, according to the catalogs, but mine did not bloom. The plants grow these amazingly large, sweet potato like tuberous roots underneath the crown. Mine ranged in size from about 4 ounces to well over a pound, and most were probably in the 10 to 16 ounce range. From six plants, I got probably about 2/3rds to 3/4ths of a bushel (didn't measure them exactly, just threw into a box). The tuber has a dark brown skin, which peels easily but which can also be eaten. Texture of the flesh is similar to waterchestnut or jicama, but is more "delicate." Flavor is a very sweet, mild carrot flavor with fruity overtones. I've found it really good in both salads and stirfried dishes. The plant also grows round, inedible, vegetative tubers that look like small Jerusalem artichokes. These are carried over (hopefully it will work for me) to replant the next season. I ordered my three plants from Nichols Garden Nursery in Oregon last spring. They came as nice potted plants about 4 inches tall. Each one had two distinct sprouts, so I separated them at planting and made 6 total. I grew them in large barrels in good soilless mix, kept them well watered and fertilized. The plants got about 4 to 6 feet tall. I dug them in mid-October. So far, the tubers appear to be storing well -- catalogs and internet sources claim that they will store for 6 to 8 months in cool, semi-humid locations. Seeds of Change, I believe, was also offering these plants in their catalog last year. Over at Idigmygarden.com, in either the Heirloom Gardening or General Digging messageboards, there are a couple of yacon threads, and I posted some photos of my plants and crop taken on the day of harvest back in October. I don't have an exact link searched up, but you can find it pretty easily by doing a search for "yacon" if anyone is interested. NO you can not put that on Android the best is Lookout and it is free, and let me say how jealous I am that is one fine piece of technology you have there, would dearly love one. You can just go to the android market from your tablet just click on the icon that says market then do a search there for lookout security. Lookout that is what you are looking for. you can just click on the download then install button right there on your tablet and it will install it for you. Let me know if you need any help all of my tablets are Android and I have a LOT of apps I love on mine and can share which to get. For ebook reading I love aldiko which you can get from market, you can get kindle and nook apps from there too if you would like those. When in the android market just do a search for what you want or select the categories button to see the break down there.

For years I used the free ones, like Zone, and also the spyware ones, plus the free firewall. Then I tried Zone Alarm security suite, which worked super great for 5 mo. It had the firewall, spyware, and antivirus all in one item, which was nice. Then on one update, it made the machine go crazy, and I could not update it. We tried for 2 weeks with no success, and I could not use the pc. Finally it went in the shop, and the fellow said that the Zone S. Suite was conflicting with Windows programs. So it had to be removed. That happened in June, and I go on their site, to see how it is going on, and they are still having problems. They also refused to refund my money, which was over half a yr. left. Recently I put in Vipre, after much study. You can get a 15 day trial on it, and also the company has a firewall that is quite good. I bought the virus protection after the trial, and it also has spyware protection, and I love it. Also it uses the less amount of space on your pc, according to their chart on many of the virus protection plans. I had two professionals tell me that Vipre was the way to go, so I have had it now for several months. Darlene

If I had to venture a guess, you haven't given AVG the time to complete a system scan, which it will try to do on a daily basis. If you turn off the computer and/or turn off the your internet connection, when you turn on the computer, AVG wants to run and the first thing it does it check for an update. If one is available, it's downloading that and sucking up your bandwidth.

Another suggestion might (unrelated to anti-virus) is set up your email program to just download the headers. That way you won't waste limited bandwidth downloading spam or the chain emails that Cousin Wilber always sends.

AVG 2011 Bug Affects Browsing Experience, Could Also Hurt Websites

A serious bug in a component of the new AVG 2011 anti-malware products causes computers to flood websites with unnecessary HTTP requests and in many cases prevents users from properly using their browsers.

It appears that the bug is located in the LinkScanner component, which is found in the entire AVG 2011 product line, including the company's popular free antivirus.

LinkScanner has two features. One called Search-Shield, which places safety ratings next to search results and another one called Surf-Shield, which checks pages in real time.

Not sure if the bug was addressed. Last week avg crashed windows 7 computers due to other reasons.

Thanks so much for those instructions, Zep. Since I work retail (long hours right now) with a long commute, I will have to wait until I'm off again next Sunday before I'll have the time to do that. But I'll post my results after I do it.

FYI, I clean my temp files weekly. And I have a web program that allows me to see my e-mail before I even open my e-mail program. I delete all spam every time before I even open the e-mail program. But even so, once my e-mail starts to download, my system just completely freezes up. I had gotten into the habit of opening Task Manager before even connecting to the internet so I could end the e-mail program and start again. Sometimes Task Manager couldn't even end the program!

But since I uninstalled AVG yesterday, my whole system has been reacting as if I have a broadband connection - it's wonderful. But I don't mind sacrificing some speed for virus protection, so I'm hopeful Zep's instructions will help me.

you need to do this stuff right now if you already took off AVG that means you are operating with NO antivirus protection that is a HUGE risk. Either disconnect from the internet till you have time to install the new program or take time to do it NOW. Do not risk using the pc with out protection.
