Best Antivirus Program for My Situation?

I finally couldn't take it any longer and uninstalled AVG. I'm one of the few still left that live in a rural location with no broadband options available. I use an air card, which is better than just dial-up, but far from a real broadband connection. I had had AVG 2011 for about a month, and just couldn't tolerate it another day. Yesterday it took 9 minutes just to open my e-mail program, and I don't mean 9 minutes to get my e-mail, but just to open the program. It took another 25 minutes to get my e-mail. It had rendered the internet useless for me.

Unfortunately I think all programs are probably now geared toward those with high-speed connections only and are way too robust for someone in my situation. But in the off chance that someone knows of a program that would work with my situation, I would love to hear from you. While I've never gotten a virus in over 16 years of use, I would still feel better having some protection, but not if I can't even use the internet anymore.

Microsoft Security Essentials may be a little better for you, download it to the desktop from the link below, don't double click the set up file just yet.

Once you have the set up file for Microsoft Security Essentials, visit the link below and download the AVG REMOVER choose the 32 bit or 64 bit according to your system.

http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools

AVG Remover eliminates all the parts of your AVG installation from your computer, including registry items, installation files, user files, etc.

Once the AVG remover has done it's work you can now double click the Microsoft Security Essentials set up file and proceed to install it.

Once those steps are complete, run the temp file cleaner following the instructions below:

Clean out your temporary internet files and temp files.

Download TFC by OldTimer click Here to your desktop. Click the Save file tab, save it to the desktop. Then double click it to run it.

Double-clickTFC.exe to run it.

Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator

TFC will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin

* Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process.
* Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two.
* Please let TFC run uninterrupted until it is finished.

Once TFC is finished it should restart your computer. If it does not, please manually restart the computer yourself to ensure a complete cleaning.

Please re-post after you make the change. If you still have slowness issues after following zep's instructions, then you may have another problem which is unrelated to the AV program you are using.

Hurrah Maggie. Thanks for sharing. As you know, and thanks to your inspiration, we're on our own journey with rabbits as well. We picked up a breeding pair of NZ's on Easter (by coincidence). We're slowly processing our first litter born two weeks after Easter. Since then, we too have been experimenting with diet and valiantly searching for info - namely, a recipe for homemade pellets (wafers, whatever) to supplement with hay or dried grass. Our ideal is to rid ourselves from a dependence on feed stores, but still have healthy rabbits. We have lots of green stuff here in the Pac NW, but hay is a little trickier to make. It rains A LOT. We managed, but it was a real struggle to dry properly, and I'm not sure it is the best quality, even though its from pasture grass seed sewn this spring. They eat it though! Here's our report: Without a doubt, Mr. & Mrs. Bunny were raised on pellets. Since Mrs. Bunny was pregnant when we bought her (surprise!), we never moved her entirely from pellets, but slowly introduced greens, much to her delight. Mr. Bunny was far less receptive for a long while, but he's rather a cranky sort anyway (honest) and displays his various moods by accepting or rejecting food (and bowls) no matter what we feed him. So no real baseline sample with him! Our first litter was exposed to salad and pellets from day 1. They prefer salad to pellets and grass hay as a slightly distant third. We also treat them with toasted bread ends. I get these from a bakery I work at - no hormones, preservatives etc., just toasted whole-wheat bread. (Inspired, I experimented in the creation of a bread substance specifically for rabbits that could be more easily preserved, but later abandoned the idea). The results from our first litter were that the kits never reached a good weight until much later - even though they always had pellets available! Our biggest - now at twenty or so weeks is finally 5 lbs, though most are averaging 4.5 lbs. On the plus side, no one was ever sick or in poor health. It just took them lots longer - which cost us time, energy (and $$$ for extra housing!) When we brought this topic to the meat rabbit group on Yahoo, it was explained that our feeding program was prohibiting rapid meat development. Were surely not surprised really, but the alternative (for best results), would be a feeding more program which more resembles the "Cornish Cross Rock" practice. We're searching for a happy medium. We were fortunate enough to meet one of our state's most knowledgeable rabbit growers showing at the fair this year. She echoed the meat group and admitted that rabbits will suck down greens "like candy bars" when given the choice. (I'm not so sure this is a bad thing). She DID mention that we should ignore what others say about having to have high grade pellets. Her opinion is that the cheaper brands work just as well as the more expensive ones. As for home made foods, she recommended an old book that lists a recipe for meat production (author - Templton, we have a used copy on order). I'll share the recipe when I get the book. At least we'll know whatÂs IN those pellets - or should be according to Templeton! Mrs. Bunny just kindled 7 more kits last week, so we can make adjustments this time. I don't think 6 years is bad for computer life. Technology changes so fast that many change computers often even if nothing is wrong with the old one. But, have you had the computer looked at? See what it would take to have it fixed? We have a desktop system that is very rarely used. Hubby has a laptop and I have a netbook. I love my netbook (small laptop). I like Apple products. We both have Iphones and I use an Ipad. However, at work we use Dell and MS programs. I also do hubby's contract work bookkeeping, some of which goes on to the accountant. The accountant uses MS. So, no Mac for us. My dad is crazy over his! I don't think though that you have to go with a Mac to avoid virus problems. You don't open email attachments unless you know what they are - right? I'd be curious as to where you're picking up the virus.

Not surprisingly I'm the black sheep. I've been a long-time fan of AVG. Currently using version 8. Tried Avast a couple times and never was happy with it. Tried it again a couple months ago when I had a glitch with AVG and couldn't stand it. Then I found the glitch was a simple solution. It just happened again today, but if all I have to do is delete a couple files once or twice a year, I'll stay with it. Lower resources, less confusion. But Avast has its fans too.... obviously! :)

If I had to venture a guess, you haven't given AVG the time to complete a system scan, which it will try to do on a daily basis. If you turn off the computer and/or turn off the your internet connection, when you turn on the computer, AVG wants to run and the first thing it does it check for an update. If one is available, it's downloading that and sucking up your bandwidth.

Another suggestion might (unrelated to anti-virus) is set up your email program to just download the headers. That way you won't waste limited bandwidth downloading spam or the chain emails that Cousin Wilber always sends.

AVG 2011 Bug Affects Browsing Experience, Could Also Hurt Websites

A serious bug in a component of the new AVG 2011 anti-malware products causes computers to flood websites with unnecessary HTTP requests and in many cases prevents users from properly using their browsers.

It appears that the bug is located in the LinkScanner component, which is found in the entire AVG 2011 product line, including the company's popular free antivirus.

LinkScanner has two features. One called Search-Shield, which places safety ratings next to search results and another one called Surf-Shield, which checks pages in real time.

Not sure if the bug was addressed. Last week avg crashed windows 7 computers due to other reasons.

Thanks so much for those instructions, Zep. Since I work retail (long hours right now) with a long commute, I will have to wait until I'm off again next Sunday before I'll have the time to do that. But I'll post my results after I do it.

FYI, I clean my temp files weekly. And I have a web program that allows me to see my e-mail before I even open my e-mail program. I delete all spam every time before I even open the e-mail program. But even so, once my e-mail starts to download, my system just completely freezes up. I had gotten into the habit of opening Task Manager before even connecting to the internet so I could end the e-mail program and start again. Sometimes Task Manager couldn't even end the program!

But since I uninstalled AVG yesterday, my whole system has been reacting as if I have a broadband connection - it's wonderful. But I don't mind sacrificing some speed for virus protection, so I'm hopeful Zep's instructions will help me.

you need to do this stuff right now if you already took off AVG that means you are operating with NO antivirus protection that is a HUGE risk. Either disconnect from the internet till you have time to install the new program or take time to do it NOW. Do not risk using the pc with out protection.
