Wrong 2.5' Notebook Replacement HDD

This is related to an earlier thread on the 2.5" HDD.

I purchased a Toshiba MK6034GSSX 60 GB to replace a dead Toshiba MK4025GAS 40 GB 2.5" HDD in my HP notebook. Both are ATA and the 60 GB was listed in Newegg as a notebook HDD. As it turns out the connectors are different. The 40 GB has a 44+ pin parallel-like connector, the 60 GB has a different number of connections arranged in a wipe-tpye rather than plug type pin. SO, its a no-go, and I wonder what one needs to know to be able buy a replacement over the web, i.e., without looking physically at the connector.
