Microsoft Office 2007 problems with old docs

It won't deal with my microsoft 2003 docs. I was trying to convert them by copying and pasting, and it froze up. Tech support said, I need more memory and I am chaning from 1ram to 2 rams next week, but I thought I would install open office, but that takes hours. I am not sure I want that, I just need a way to open word 2003 doc copy the data, and then paste into 2007. One things occurs to me, if I don't update all docs they could become obsolete in time. I could just install office 2003 again, but that came with outlook, and I don't want to install outlook. Plus it is so old, I don't want that old problem messing up my computer. I will probably come up with some way to do this. Any suggestions?
