printer selection

Hi, I'm usually lurking on the KT but I thought I'd try here. We are going to print our own invitations for my daughters wedding. Already have the invites. The invitations are heavy metallic cardstock, the website where purchased said they were "112 overweight" whatever that means. Could someone please, please help me with what printer to get that can print on thick, metallic paper without the print smudging? Thank you to any and all who could possible help with this. I really appreciate it.

"Your best bet is to find a laser printer that offers the most "straight through" printing path or as flat as possible. Any models that use media flowing in curves/bend tend to curl heavy stock. Some do offer a secondary media exit to help reduce this, but ideas gets tossed from one model to the next, you have to ask and look for it. *BEWARE* if you get into alot printing, heavy stock tends to wearout printers as these aren't "printing presses" but simple media output, typically. Expect to do more maint. as time goes by. I suggest you look into Canon or Minolta models and not the cheap models either. Got to a Kinko's, OfficeDeport/OfficeMax(copy center) see what they use, as they are used alot. Or have them do it for you.."

"#110 Metallic cardstock (as well as ANY metallic paper) really needs to be tested, there isn't one printer that will automatically handle all metallic etc. That's because the coating is different on all of the metallic papers. Some are designed for inkjet, and some are much better with laser (toner) printers."

I should probably tell you there is another printer attached to this computer, but it prints fine. Well now, perhaps the computer cannot access a USB printer and one using the LPT1 connection. Long time since I had an LPT1 connected printer, not sure if there is anything in the BIOS to affect this. Was the old video card separate or built into the mobo? You might try reversing that just to confirm whether it has any bearing on the printer. Seems odd but anything is possible I suppose. If the old card was built in did you make the changes in the BIOS to accept the new card?

Go to your Control Panel - double click on the Printers & Faxes icon. Right Click the selected printer - Select USE PRINTER ONLINE. That should clear it up. This is where you can also purge your unprinted documents that are causing you grief. Just double click on that printers icon - select PRINTER and in the drop down menu from that select "Cancel documents"

Maybe it's a problem with the website that keeps you from printing it. Or you may need to install new printer drivers (available at hp.com). I just use the "Snipping Tool" to highlight what I want. That way, I can save the selection to my computer or paste it in Word to print it. The Snipping Tool on Vista is great, but if you have XP, you can download a free snipping tool. I only discovered this wonderful tool recently, and I think it's one of the coolest features yet!

Did you check this to make sure the correct printer and paper size is selected: HP DeskJet 2130 All-in-One series To print a document (Windows) 1. From your software, select Print. 2. Make sure your printer is selected. 3. Click the button that opens the Properties dialog box. I would definitely check prices for having them printed at like Kinko's or some print shop vs the price of the ink and the price of the printer, I bet you would be better off with that kind of stock to have them printed. And keep in mind how many may end up ruined in the learning process with the do it yourself method.

There are a few inkjet models which can print in color directly on DVDs/CDs.

They probably can do the job.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I think we will at least get a price quote from one of the recommended printing places. Don't have much room for error as we have a limited number of invites. Thank you again for all your help.

I would second zep's suggestion of finding a printer with a straight printing path; heavy stock is very susceptible to curling especially with the heat of a laser printer.

If you decide to buy a printer, I would suggest carefully reading the specification. Some printers can handle heavier paper than others. 112 is the "weight" of the paper.
