Need Help! Printer Won't Print 'Selection'

I have a HP DeskJet 4180 All-in-One Printer. Something went wrong with it a couple of weeks ago (after I'd changed one of the cartridges) and it wouldn't print. It loaded,etc. but it failed to print. So my son messed with it and it started printing. I haven't had to use it until today and I was going to print out "The Awakening" (that I posted for AprilFlower). I highlighted it and hit Print, the chose "Selection". All that printed was the "Headers and Footers"...the rest was blank. I copied the highlighted part into Wordpad, hit "Print All" and the whole thing printed out! Weird!

Any ideas what might be wrong? Maybe a setting is off?

Yep..it's black.

Here's my latest attempt. Uninstalled the software everywhere I could find it. Did an Error Check and then a defrag. Rebooted. Downloaded the software again. Disconnected the printer and reconnected it accoriding to instructions on the Quck Start poster that came with my printer. After installation, I did a manual test page, which printed out fine. I made sure the printer is listed as the default. But when I tried yet again to print from a computer file, yet again nothing happened. If I had a cd, I don't now. That's strange because I have the cd for my scanner,which is older than my printer. I also have cd's that came with my first computer, years ago. But no printer cd. There is still an explanation in front of the Printer Port in the DM, and the printer is still not listed there. The link you gave, grandms, didn't help, unfortunately. I will go to the hp site to locate the live person when I have the time to devote to it. I've spent so much time on this, my RL is slipping, and I have to catch up. Thanks to everyone who has tried so hard to help me. If any more ideas occur to anyone, just post it. I'll be checking back here, as I always do. I love this site. Dee

If you use a Windows PC, you should be able to access a print queue or jobs list starting with Devices and Printers from the Start menu or in Control Panel. When you open that, double click on the icon that represents your printer and you should see that particular print job listed where you can select and then delete it.

I'm not familiar with your model of printer but here's one thing to try. I had a similar problem with my HP D1320 model. It was problem free but after changing the color cartridge it took forever to print one page (like 30 minutes). I used their online support and if I remember correctly I was told to hold in the on/off button and, while doing so, open and close the lid 3 or 4 times. That was supposed to "reset" the system. Ultimately we found my problem was that I needed to change my black cartridge --even though it was still half full of ink.

Call Epson for help. If there is something wrong with it they will know and probably tell you to return it. I have had a couple of electronic things I had to take back.

Maybe it's a problem with the website that keeps you from printing it. Or you may need to install new printer drivers (available at hp.com).

I just use the "Snipping Tool" to highlight what I want. That way, I can save the selection to my computer or paste it in Word to print it. The Snipping Tool on Vista is great, but if you have XP, you can download a free snipping tool.

I only discovered this wonderful tool recently, and I think it's one of the coolest features yet!

OK..this IS strange! I went to another website, highlighted something and it printed out fine! I'm wondering if GW has done something to prevent the highlight/print...or is it even possible for them to do that?

Wanda... I have Windows XP. Where can I find and download the Snipping Tool and how do I use it. If it's complicated, I'm not sure if I even wanna go there! lol

Okay, if it was the piece you posted in AprilFlower's thread, beginning "There Comes a Time in Your Life".....?

I highlighted a paragraph of it, and it printed just fine. :-)

Thanks for the link,Wanda! I'll sure check it out.

In the meantime, while this issue? problem? is not earth-shattering, it's bugging the crap outta me! lol

I went back to AprilFlower's post and highlighted that area again, then chose Print Preview..and this is all that shows (headers/footers) and this is exactly how it prints out!

I can't print from Gardenweb either...I have to cut and paste into a document and THEN "file" "print" "selection".

I can print selection from Outlook Express, but not from any other source. I thought perhaps it was just forums, but my newspaper won't let me do the selection part, either. So I just c/p to word pad and print from there.

I would try downloading the printer drivers. You can also run a diagnostic utility from this link.
