Color printer won't work w new cartridge

I have an HP 990cse color inkjet printer. I just put in a new color ink cartridge and the color printing function will no longer work. The b/w cartridge is almost new.

I did not forget to remove the sticky tape. It's the right cartridge. I have taken it out and reinstalled several times--still nothing. I really can't use the printer--and it's my only one--without color so the situation is pretty desperate. Any ideas?

I suggest you go to the HP website. Click on support and then enter the name and model number of your printer. Opt for the online chat help and see if the help you need is available there. More likely to find a solution there than here where we'd be "guessing" at a solution to your problem.

Try unplugging the power from the printer, then plug it back in, maybe that will give it a fresh start. At least that is what I do when printers give me a problem. They seem to have a mind of their own and get confused very easily as to what they are supposed to be doing.

I buy my ink at my local Walmart. I can buy it cheaper there and it is the same brand as if I ordered it from my printer manufacturer website. When I bought my new printer, I bought it online from Walmart. The ink price for one black ink cartridge is 14.99 and the color is 19.99. Added together, that is cheaper than one cartridge of ink for the old Deskjet 932C I had. I gave that printer along with my old scanner and my old HP computer to a friend who has 2 children and didn't have a computer for her kids to learn with. I also gave her the spare ink I had for it so she did not have to go out and buy new ink. My printer now is an all in one and use No.s 21, 21XL and 22, 22XL Tri-color , Photo print ink cartridge 58.

Check out ebay auction number 330166991293. This is the exact system that I have. I'm very pleased with it. I was not able to find a brand name on the box - seems it's a generic from China - but it works well. Of course this won't work with your printer but if you look long enough you'll likely see a system for your printer that obviously comes from the same manufacturer based on the graphics on the box. I'm pretty sure this uses dye based inks. Seems that I came across that discussion doing my research and I decided it wasn't worth the headache to fret over the differences. I think the pigment based inks are supposed to be more long lasting. I decided to go the easier and cheaper route and simply plan to reprint any prints that fade over time.

A tip to save ink: I print in "Fast Draft" mode rather than "Normal"--it uses much less ink, and the minor decrease in print quality doesn't bother me. If I'm doing a very important document, I just change to "Normal" quality. My printers are set to "Fast Draft" as default, so I don't have to remember to change the preferences each time. gneegirl, the cost of cartridges depends on the printer--my newer printers use cartridges that cost $15, whereas my old all-in-one uses cartridges that cost $30. And my laser printer cartridges are $65 (but last much, much longer).

I bought one a long time ago that would not accept a replacement cartridge. I called HP, they walked me through a couple of things, then told me they would send a re manufactured printer and I was to ship the other printer back to them using the box & labels inside. I had a another printer the next day if I remember right. Always very good service from HP.

Did you try a little alcohol, on a tissue on the place the tape comes off of, to get it started flowing?

I have found on some models for some reason they want you to replace the black cartridge also, have you tried removing and replacing the current black cartridge along with the new color one? you may try that and even adding a new black one to see if that is what it takes.

and to clarify is it printing at all? does the black print?
what happens when you do try to print?

Gee, I was hoping this thread would drop into oblivion. Now I have to tell the truth.

After I tried everything and then posted here, I went back to trying everything--and I had not completely removed the sticky tape. My brain was visiting another planet, I guess. Thanks for all your suggestions--all good. Blushing hard here.
