First things first.

Right click on the time. Select Adjust Date/Time. In the appearing window, does the proper date appear? If not, set the calendar>Apply>OK.

If the calendar is accurate I would set it to a date in 2007, and do the above. Then I would reset it to the correct date.

If neither suggestion helps, I would be curious. Place the cursor over the START button without clicking. Does anything appear? It should say, "Click here to begin".

Resetting did not work but doing it reminded me of a very, very old trick - power off and then on - that worked.

Mine doesn't always work. Never figured out why. Most times it does, but when I really need to check the date, it doesn't. It doesn't seem like a stable feature.

You are right in some cases a simple reboot is all the system needs.

Not so much with XP and Vista now-a-days, but think back to Win98. It could corrupt just sitting and being on. The recommendation of a daily reboot to preserve settings and efficiency was regularly recommended here and at other forums. Perhaps by some quirk your system requires an occasional reboot. Just a thought.

Shut it down every night. Actually I remember Win 98 and kinda miss that rebooting. Always worked like magic!

No, I have two new machines (1yr) and neither of them keep the date reliably. The time is always there, but many times I have to R-click to get the date. It just doesn't show on either machine most of the time.

I always tell myself that its my own fault for not remembering what the date is...the computer tests me..

Jane, I fixed mine, so far anyway, with the old power off trick. Shut it down and unplug it from the A/C wall outlet.

(Perhaps off topic. We've an old TV in a spare bedroom that must be unplugged every time before it can be turned on.)

You are right DA, stranger things than the date. Jersey is known for it too, people say it's the electrical energy given off by the transmitters on the buildings. If you park in mid-town, near the Empire State Building, remotes don't work (cars, TV's, cells etc.)

I'm sure that is the reason I can't remember the date!

If you hold the cursor over the time until the date pop-up disappears, it will stop working. (About 6 seconds) To reset the function, simply move your cursor over the "Start" button.
