I have the F&P drawers, which were the only ones available when I purchased them. KitchenAid now carries single and double styles, but I doubt they're inexpensive. Maybe on sale?

Assuming you're in the U.S., there are only two manufacturers of drawer-style dishwashers -- Whirlpool/Kenmore and Fisher & Paykel.

Fisher & Paykel's design is sold under their native brand-name, and also KitchenAid and DCS. A single-drawer unit is about half the price of a double-drawer unit.

Whirlpool's design (which they inherited via Maytag when they bought the Maytag company last year) is currently sold under the Kenmore Elite brand.

Look around for reconditioned dishdrawers, if those would work for a rental pool. They should come with a full warranty and be indistinguishable from new, at significant savings. Ebay often has them and some of the appliance websites offer them in the Sale or Clearance sections.

I was interested in buying these as we are just 2 at home and I was talked out of them at 3 places I went to even though they are more expensive than your average dishwasher. You are only saving a little bit of water by running one drawer they told me. Some of the dishwashers have a run top only or run bottom separately modes which is sort of the same idea. The other drawback is that you can't put larger items in them and there are more leakage issues. If it were me I wouldn't want to increase that likelihood especially in a rental situation.

While leakage is a potential problem with all dishwashers, I do not believe it is more likely with current DD's. This is my opinion.

However, you can fit larger items in a DD than you can fit in a normal dishwasher. I can fit my 20 quart (i.e. 5 gallons) stock pot in my DD. There is not conventional DW that I know of that could hold it. Simply lift out the two racks and you can fit very large items in the DD.

However, in the end, unless it is a very high-end rental unit, I don't think a DD is the bet choice for a rental unit. Loading is different in a DD, and most renters would probably not do a good job of it, leading to complaints.

I looked at DD when it came time to replace our DW, thinking that it made more since with just 2 of us. My hubby choked at the price, so we bought a Bosch that has a top only wash. Haven't used it in that capacity once! And I love the Bosch.

This is probably irrelevant to the original poster, but the thing we like about the DD is that there are *two* of them. When one is full, you start it and then start loading the other one. Also, for a couple like us that doesn't generate all that many dishes, you don't have things sitting in there for four days while you finish filling it.

This is in reference to cpovey. I was not aware that you could remove the racks in the drawers to accomodate bigger items. That is good to know. The salesmen were going with the logic of double the mechanics so less room for dishes idea.

To vmolesg. That is why I wanted the drawers too but I was convince to go with a Miele that I have on order that could do half load instead which turned out to be less money than the DD.

To clarify, the two *inserts*, designed to hold glasses/bowls and plates, can be removed to make a wide-open space. The rack itself cannot be removed or the loaded items would be in direct contact with the wash arm.
