Easter Basket--my substitute Peace rose?

Years ago, I tried several times to grow Peace, which to me is absolutely one of the most beautiful roses. Its delicates shades of pastel yellow and slight pink flush, all on an ivory background, are without compare. So why did I quit growing Peace? Blackspot!!!!!!

I have now found a rose--a floribunda called Easter Basket--that colorwise captures a bit of the pale yellow and pink flush that Peace does so beautifully. True, Easter Basket's blooms are only about half the size of Peace's blooms--and probably have only half the number of petals a Peace bloom has--but the subtle, delicate shadings are kind of Peace-like. And guess what--Easter Basket is VERY DISEASE-RESISTANT!

See what you think in these pics. I should warn you, however, that my camera insists on darkening the yellow a bit more than it is on the actual bush--much more pastel effect in real life.

What's really cool about Easter Basket (and quite dissimilar to Peace) is that this floribunda is constantly changing colors and the various shades appear simultaneously on the bush. Like--what color is this rose? LOL

Doing a google search on Easter Basket rose I found this thread. This is the first year in the ground, has had 2nd set of blooms and has shown no fungal disease on it. Small (about 2' X2' ) for now.

wow these all sound like awesome baskets! i got my basket from Vina and wow! i am floored and don't quite know where to start. there were ladyfinger cookies, chocolate marshmallow eggs, chocolate truffles, and adorable chicken statue for the garden wearing red galoshes lol, a really cute test tube vase for the window, a chili pepper (which i am going to convert to a christmas ornament for the veggie patch section of the tree ), soap shape dlike a garden fairy that is too cute to use, a picture book of here comes peter cottontail, eggs filled with candy, all nestled in gold ribbon and wrapped in pictures her kids colored!!!! so cute and what a great idea. there were also bleeding heart plats, an adorable bunny shaped tin filled with seeds and a cool blue and green shell bracelet (and i have the perfect hippie skirt to go with it), and a red peony!!! i think the easter bunny probably got a hernia carrying this to my house LOL. ooo and a flower notebook and a cute card signed by all. thank you so much and tell billy and taylor i loved their coloring. i am smoothing one of them out and hanging it on my office door :) little dog came home safe and sound-- exhausted and extra dirty, but better than she usually is after one of these excursions. thank you all for your support! and now, for bingo! bonnet lamb quack tulip Bonus word 'cause it's friday: columbine* Bonus word becasue little dog came home :): polliwog for those of you who missed it, the person who gets the most bonus words gets a prize too :) how are the bingo boards? anyone close? i need to go through and mark all the lists i have. hope everyone has a great weekend :)

Dear Kate. Thanks for your encouraging words. When I first made this post I said no one understood my grief, I didn't mean the people on this thread of course everyone here dose understand that's why we came here. I cannot talk about TJ without tearing up and hardly can talk. It has helped me in so many ways to talk about him. I have never felt this way about any person or animal. I just can't explain why? This little dog has meant so much to my life and now he's gone, I feel so empty. The person on this site said if you do not have a connection with a animal there is something missing in your soul. Truer words were never spoken I might have been one of thoses people because it has taken me 71 years to feel this way. I have had other animals,Cats, Dogs: None of them has affected me this way. TJ consumed me in a way I have never known with love and devotion. When I would have to go out shopping, my wife would look after him. TJ would not stay in the house he would go to the garage and waite for me to come back, looking through the screen. When I came back he was jumping up and down at the screen he would run out to greet me and lick and kiss me for two minutes at least, that is just one of the memories I have of his love for me. Kate, I read your responce to Mike about losing his Maltese, everything you said to him was just how I feel. I know you loved Homer very much, it shows in evry word you speak. LIFE HAS A WAY OF TEACHING YOU A LESSON...And I learned one. I am 71 years old and retired. I have a wonerdful wife married 52 years and three grown kids who are all doing well. My middle son lives in Alaska (A State trooper.) with his wife and two Boys. My Daughter lives in Chicage. My other so lives in Atlanta, His wife will be having their first child in August. I have more to say but have to get off for now. Charlie.

Playboy, Hot Cocoa, Oklahoma and Lavaglut are gone from my garden. When I started having vole problems I took the opportunity to dig them up and give them to a friend. Golden Celebration and Night Owl both have been terrible with BS, despite several early-season sprayings with Bayer. They're really too big to move so they remain. But only until I get ahold of the vole problem. (Guess I'm kinda letting the voles have them, sigh!) The roses I kept are mostly in pots, and I believe I can grow them all no-spray once the BS magnets are gone. I'm really happy with the health of Sunshine Daydream, Tamora, Prairie Harvest, Lions Rose, the Fairy, Darlow's Enigma, Blush Noisette, Vanity, Mystic Beauty, Belinda's Dream, and Easter Basket. I'll also keep Lyda Rose and Lavender Dream; they do occasionally shed a lot of leaves but always recover. I ordered mostly Kordes roses this year which I plan to grow in pots: Savannah, Eliza, Pink Enchantment, Peach Drift, Dark Desire. Sure hope they're healthy!

The US didn't immediately warm up to the new Soviet Union for geopolitical reasons as much as anything. When Lenin took power in 1917, he withdrew the country from active conflict. That allowed Germany to concentrate its forces on the Western front (where the allies and ultimately the US were fighting). On the other hand, anti-German sentiment was quite strong some time earlier because of the war (started in 1914, renaming of Kitchener was in 1916 just as one of many examples). The Soviet regime was new and in the early years, few Americans knew much about it. The Germans were severely punished by the Treaty of Versailles and not forgiven by the western powers anytime before WW2 started. If you had a choice in the teens to 40s of being known as having German or Russian ancestors, most would have chosen Russian. It would be wrong to not mention that Germany (West Germany through the fall of the wall) was the bulwark of the West during the Cold War and has served as the anchor point and foundation of European recovery, peace and prosperity for the last 60+ years. And continues to function as that foundation.

well, this is a very pretty rose, but, certainly not a PEACE rose.To me, there is no comparerison, but, this one is a beautiful rose you have.The peace rose is certainly bad for Black spot, cant remember how many times I have replaced my peace rose. I have a small one now in a pot,ND IT HAS LOST ALMOSTT ALL ITS LEAVES at this time, again.

Nice! I looked at HMF and saw blooms with the pink blush. You're right. A lovely substitute for those of us who have nothing but trouble with Peace..

That's a beauty. I have Chicago Peace, but I would grow Easter Basket any day. Wonderful flowers.

Here is Easter Basket blooming this year--about a month ago, I believe.

In response to your question, I should first point out that most of the roses in my gardens are not doing quite as well as last year. This past winter was brutal and most of the roses had to be pruned back severely. While they are growing and blooming, they are still too short and not as full and floriferous as they should be.

Easter Basket suffered the same conditions as the other roses, but is recovering better than some of them. It has had two bloom cycles so far this year, but it still isn't as tall and wide as it was last year. However, when it blooms, they look as lovely as usual--just not as many as usual. It has had a touch of BS--again I attribute that to it not being fully recovered from the brutal winter. However, I don't think I actually sprayed it when I sprayed the HTs a couple times in the spring.

I guess I'm going to have to wait until next year before I make a definitive statement, but I have no plans to replace this rose and believe it should snap out of its brutal winter blues by then--at least I sure hope so.

It will be interesting to see how it blooms this fall--whether it has recovered by then or not.

Thats understandable Kate it was a bad winter last year...

Helpmefind.com says the blooms are 2 3/4 inches...

Love your easter basket rose! I think its a fabulous substitute peace rose since the peace rose gives me no peace!!!! Lol. It gets BS and defoliates down to nothing and barely blooms! I am putting easter basket on my lust list now. Where did you get it from and is it own root? Thanks in advance.

Jim, I think some of the blooms are slightly larger than that--closer to 3 inches.

Bayourose, sorry, but I no longer remember where I got my Easter Basket. If I got it from Roses Unlimited (I often order from them), then it was own root. However, I often order from the Canadian companies: Pickering or Palatine. If that is where I got it, it has a multiflora graft. When I can't find a rose at the usual places online, I've been known to order from Reagan Nursery in California--I'd guess those would be grafted, but I don't know on what.

Keep in mind that Easter Basket is a floribunda, so it will not yield those big showy HT type blooms. The colors are delightful on it and I love the frilly edges, but individually the blooms are not showpieces. It is a floriferous rose however, so it often has lots of blooms blooming. And it has been quite BS resistant so far.

Thank you, Kate. It looks like roses unlimited and reagans both have easter basket. I don't have to have the hybrid tea look like peace just as long as it blooms. Peace was just so stingy with her blooms and they were so few and far between that I would love to have one with similar colors that bloom so often. I, too, love the frilly edges of easter basket. I can't wait to try her out. Thanks so much for sharing this rose with us. I love this website, because you get to see such wonderful roses and get the inside information on how they bloom and grow. I just hope this rose does well in Louisiana humidity. Thanks again.
