Wooohooo...gorgeous, GP! Doncha just love that fuzzy ol' moth? I found a cat for one 2 years ago, and we had a long discussion here about what it might be when it finally emerged. Turned out to be a different variety than yours...I think a salt-marsh leopard moth, or the like. I'll have to go find my pictures.

Your hibiscus coccinea is lovely, and all the rest, too!

Take a look at the link below, from WIKI ANSWERS. It has a good bit to say about orange oil, and what kind, and also a few other methods of killing these critters. Including heat....but that would be in a house with wooden framing etc, not out in the ground. If you have a huge hot water tank, connect your garden hose to the drain (after turning the tank up to the max and getting the water the hottest you can) and try it. Couldn't hurt. I think what you want to do is kill the queen. So jabbing a sharp stick down into the middle would be a good way to penetrate deeper. But read about the orange oil just in case. Susan, the photos of your garden were the ones I always looked forward to seeing. Your garden was a paradise. I sure hope you will post photos of your new garden! I had the opposite problem years ago - I moved roses in July of our hot Texas summer. I watered daily [and I mean DAILY]. I did not lose a one! When I moved to another new farm, I potted them up and kept them in the shade and well watered. I still have some left from that move 15 years ago. I was interested to see you have Cape Cod - I have one too, a small one that I am going to move this week to more sun. The photos look beautiful. And think you have enabled me into Bolero..... Good luck with your new garden. Hopefully, you will be able to move more roses if the new owners dont want them. Dont know how I could have chosen which to pick.....I would have had to hire help and dug them all up! Good luck to you, and hope to see photos of the new garden and how you make it. Judith

Your dad sounds like he was a master gardener. I'm not much of a vegetable gardener, but this much I can share: Tomatoes- water only when very dry for the sweetest toms. Once a month is enough in some climates. I can't hold off and always over-water them. Cukes- water every other day or even daily depending on weather- they get bitter if they go dry. Acorn squash- water twice a week depending on soil and weather. Pick cukes as soon as they are ready or the vines will shut down production. I think grapes dislike being watered too much, but you had better wait for someone who knows what they are talking about to chime in on that. Renee

I agree with not digging out the soil. Bob cats create an enormous mess. You will have soil to get rid of. If you build a bed that is raised even slightly above ground level, tending it is much easier. If you are talking about crop rotation and companion planting, then might we assume you are intending to grow vegetables and/or herbs? It is important to state this on a forum like this, to get right to the point. You may find the cornucopia forum more usefull if you are growing vegies. Raised beds and a no dig type garden would be far more suitable, bearing in mind that you will need to continuously improve the soil. You might as well make use of the soil that is already there, in which to incorporate all your yummy additives. Cheers, Jan

Oh, that tiger moth was in the paper today! They had a whole page on moths.
I remember years ago we had a moth that looked like that but was pink? Haven't seen one in many years!

This is the second leopard moth I have found on my property.The other was larger. The water lily I bought years ago and thought it was gone.It had disappeared for a year or so.My hubby was in pulling cattails and disturbed the mud and apparently it needed that because now I have several.It is a Night bloomer that I know.It hides its blossoms after about 10 AM.

golden, your photos are always so stunning. I have never seen a leopard moth, how beautiful is he/she!! I have been getting more Sphynx moths this year. I really enjoy watching them.

Very interesting moth. I've never seen one of those either.

I like the hibiscus a lot too. Great pictures.
