I'm exhausted and need help....

I visited 10 garden centers this weekend and not even a bit close to figuring out what to do along this fence (sorry about the trash cans full of garden debris).

I would like to do a tropical Japanese theme very loosely interpreted. This side is shade to moderate shade and it will only get shadier as the trees continue to grow. There's a live oak on the right and a sabal palm on the left with about 20 feet in between. From the fence to drive strip is about 8 feet.

One of the things that is throwing me off are my neighbor's Ali ficus plants which drape over the fence. I don't mind them but I am having enough trouble as it is without having to incorporate that design element too.

I don't know whether to go with taller plants or to keep them short along the fence.

At first I wanted crape myrtle but there just isn't enough sun.

If some kind soul(s) would give me some big or even small ideas to jump start this process, I would be forever appreciative.
