My new DL bed pics, I'm exhausted!

Ok, it obviously still needs more attention - ditch dug between grass and bed, mulch put down, etc... plant markers already ordered.

further along there are these which I obviously planted too close together. I knew it was a temporary spot for them, but I didn't expect them to grow so much in one month! They came so small!

A very good start. Looks as if you have some room left to plant more daylilies.

Love your Jen Melon, sure does look a lot like my Starstruck.

Looks like I have not been the only one busy with daylily bed projects. Going to look very nice when its done and especially next year when it is all blooming.

Like Joespider, I was wondering about the heights in your new bed. I alway list height and bloom season when I am planting a large group, but only worry about colors if I think I am going to have too many reds or yellows close together. I like a variety of color. I have a bed that is 125 feet by about 8 feet, and the section shown here outlined by the posts is probably 16 feet by 8 feet. It might be a lot of daylilies in your new bed if those roses are going to bush out a lot, but I bet you could get most of them in there. Since this picture was taken in 2007, I now have at least 15 daylilies in this section, plus some other stuff. It will be fun figuring it all out! Vickie

Oh, how BEAUTIFUL everyone! I love daylilies and irises, so this is a lovely treat on a dreary gray morning. My daylilies and irises are still just doing foliage - no blooms for me for a month or so. Meanwhile, I can dream of 'Cordoba' and 'Epicenter,' and 'Waiting For Peace' and 'Wispy Rays.' I have a large bunch of seedlings that should bloom for the first time this year, and I am SO excited. Thank you all very much for your sympathy! It's just.. that it is the first time this happened. I don't believe I ever lost a daylily. Thanks Marg, yes that's strange, mine seemed to grow well too like you said about your seedlings, I don't know what happened. Thanks Nancy, yes I remember reading about yours, so sad. 75 is a lot :( Thanks Sarah and Deangreen, those old peonies turned to be very easy to grow, hope it continues Thanks Jean, yep, just up and died :( Thanks Mantis, the heaved one were not completely exposed. And no I didn't mulch (I never did). Some of them were started in pots! I can't think of anything regarding Knockout Thanks Debra. Yes, probably drought. I don't have any daisies, and only creeping phlox - no problem there. Thank you very much for your generous offer. Is it when freezing and no snow? Because we always had snow, but this winter was a little different. Yes, I had some rot during last year drought but they all recovered, some completely some not. Got it from Maryott, and it was bogo, and big.. never thought I'd have a problem. I don't know what to do and how to help those tiny ones like in 2nd picture. They just don't grow at all. As for the list, one of the dead ones was Xia Xiang, had it three years never saw a flower :) I don't think I'd replace it. Got it for the name (I am silly like that). Got Iowa Girl b/c I live in Iowa. Kitty Wells b/c we had a cat named Kitty, stuff like that. I was looking forward to Linda Beck, but it's easy to replace. If somebody ordered from Maryott at the same time last year maybe you remember that one of the promos was Rachelle Agin. I was excited to get it as a bonus because otherwise I couldn't afford it. Well.. maybe it was a sign that I don't need them.. I don't remember right now how many I ordered last year but quite a bit (for me), and only two are doing well. Thought I should mention them - it's The Band Played On (really wanted it, and I'm glad it didn't die) and JKO. Both have scapes!

shive - For all but the last picture I was using Nikkor (Nikon) 50mm f/1.8G fixed (normal) lens. It's super fast at 1.8 and I get great results from it. However, on my cropped sensor body it's a 75mm really and I have to be at minimum 3 feet from my subject to get a focused shot. I'm learning to step back and crop afterwards. The last pic was with a lens I'm in the process of returning. Yes, it's a great pic but it took me 20 pics to get that one and the other 19 were soft (not sharp). It's the Nikon 55-300mm. I'm exchanging it for a 55-200mm because it's a better, cheaper lens and I don't really need such a long zoom anyway. Coming in the mail tomorrow is a Sigma 17-70mm lens (Macro but not a true macro). It's heavy, but rated excellent and much cheaper than Nikon brand. This will probably be on my camera the most. On my wish list is the Nikon 85mm f/2.8 macro and the 35mm f/1.8 which I should have gotten instead of the 50mm but I'm not exchanging it because I like it too much and it's not expensive so I'll be happy to one day have both. See what happens when you ask a simple question? Sorry, can you tell I've been researching lenses non-stop for the past month? :) I'm going looney.

That looks great. I can't wait it cools down a bit here in the semi-tropics, lol. I want to work on a new bed and a few existing ones. I am gonna pinch pennies and have a plant sale next spring so I can go to a local daylily garden I've been wanting to see. They have good prices on the older dayliles and I am going to get me a few.

Seeing others peoples projects always helps to spur me onwards with my own projects, keep up the good work, sure will be worth it once the plants bulk up and you get lots of blooms.

There are about 20 DLs in this new bed, not including the new ones in the second pic. I'm giving away 3 that I have more than one of to my sister. (Happy Returns, Prairie Blue Eyes, and Strawberry Candy. I'll probably also give her Blackberry Candy just because I'm not crazy about how it looks.)

That gives me 4 more places for my new ones being delivered in Sept.

If I'm really strapped for space I'll give her or my mom one of my Joan Seniors. But I live Joan Sr. - such a great bloomer and still going.

Like most newbies, I ordered some I shouldn't have (too similar to another one I ordered, etc...) so I'm learning the hard way. Once everything blooms next year I'll know better what colors/shades, etc.. I have too much of and what I'm lacking.

Your doing a great job with your garden. It takes alot of work but it pays off in the end. Keep posting your progress.

The best thing about your bed is that you have room to plant more. I dug a new bed last month, but already have it almost full (3 daylilies wide X approx 20 ft.) Ga is so hot and muggy it is miserable to be outside this month.
But, when Sept. comes, I'm going to dig another spot up for the ones I have ordered. Good luck with your garden.
I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing all your lovely pics.
