huge healthy canes now on the ground!

User

On Sunday I was admiring my Wm Shakespeare 2000 that had several long canes and tons of buds and yesterday I found 4 canes lying on the ground and they appeared to be weakened down at the soil level. They were not broken off, but with a gentle tug they came right out. Is this a disease or insect damage or what? Most all my roses, including this one, start out with just a few inches of cane after spring pruning. They have been so healthy looking this year. A few aphids have been the only pest I have observed. I was SO disappointed. Any thoughts? This has happened to my Quadra, Crown Princess Margareta, and Westerland as well. Not all the canes, just a few on each plant.
