May I suggest a pot condominium for your back yard? Various lovely pots in various sizes, (tending towards the larger ones, of course), arranged artistically and filled with your wonderful purchases.

Then you can decide as they mature, if they are correctly labeled, whether you will keep them or where they should go.

A familiar story. You are helpless, don't fight it. If you can find my spring post, you will see how my backyard got converted to raised beds. Who needs grass, really . . . ?

over the top with shrub roses,perennials and all other
flw shrubs that appeal to me.(that'll be most of them)
My gardens are becoming so plush and wonderful until most
of the time I'm talking to myself AND The Lord for such
blessings and beauty. You probably are doomed...but....

I am Susan and I have a rose problem. Actually dream about them.

All too familiar. And I truly dislike pot ghettos but run out of space. I should order name tags but I am afraid of making a list knowing that the number will be outrageous.

Let me add that my search for new and newer perennials is older than my rose addiction.

On top of it I have a very serious new addiction called clematis.

No, you just buy a chainsaw and hire to men with a grinder and that will take care of the shady areas. (Don't ask me how I know that).

I also have the fever. It started 5 years ago when I innocently picked up a rose catalog I found at work. Sigh...I was powerless and fell under the spell of rose porn. I ordered several DA's and others.
I no longer have any 2nd thoughts about taking the shovel out and digging out more lawn to enlarge one of my existing rose gardens. It just HAS to be done.
Today I planted Sally Holmes and Enchanted Evening. I treated the gang to Rose Tone, lime, compost and manure. My son works at a local nursery and I get a 40% discount on all plants. I controlled myself this spring and only ordered 15 roses from 3 different sources. FUN!
This spring, at first, I thought that maybe I would like my yard better if it didn't carry such responsibilities and expense. Next thing I knew...I was outside talking to Ballerina and Gertrude Jekyll!
Today I ordered another solar powered birdbath for one of my rose gardens. Can't wait!!! I love my roses.

Just hang on and enjoy the ride---------I've had this problem since way back in the 50's when I visited a friends garden and she sent me home with a bouquet of roses.
and then long came the computer age and I found the wonderful folks on GW----

Is there any better way to beautify you life !!!!

LOL, who on this forum even has grass anymore? Mine all got dug up last year and the backyard it full of roses and perennials. The best thing is no more mowing!!! Aggierose, if you can't find PJPII at North Haven, the Calloway's on Greenville just got some in, they haven't even unloaded them yet. They were nice and full of blooms. Good luck with your new obsession, there are worse one's to have!

Thanks dallasguy!! When you say the one on greenville, do you mean the one next to jasons deli? Greenville is a long street and I think there is more than one Calloways, but I'm not sure. I can get to Calloways tomorrow. Northhaven was sold out of pjp today. :(

Aggierose, Yes, it is the one next to Jason's Deli. I agree with Jeri, the antique roses are amazing, Last year I decided to try a few, (Maggie, Perle d Or, Souvenier d St Ann's) and really loved the way they performed. I just planted a few more this spring (Old Blush, SDLM, Cramoisi Superiore, LaMarque, Duchess de Brabant, Kronprincesson Viktoria, Monsieur Tillier, Hermosa) they bloom much more often than the HT's and seem to be more disease resistant. I honestly prefer the Antique roses and floribundas to the HT's.

DOOMED!! YOU ARE DOOMED!!! I too found the dang forum and haven't been the same since. Just ask my sweet hubby, who loves his grass by way. I don't know whats wrong with him! Grass over roses and other flowers he has lost his mind. I think he's a little lulu smelling all those gas fumes mowing his grass. But he does help me out alot so I will let him keep his grass ( I sneak and make my beds bigger and bigger while he is at work so he is none the wiser). Or so he doesn't let on. Anyway I found the forum and I can't tell you how many new roses I have. It's bunches!!! But boy will my yard be BEAUTIFUL this spring and summer. So if anyone gives ya a hard time just let one of us know and we will handle it for ya. Glad someone else out there lost control like I did this year. I ordered from 5 different vendors giving the excuse I wanted to try each one out to see what size their roses were. How pathetic is that!! I hope you have a great and fun year gardening and nurturing all your new, sweet, beautiful roses. Judy ( I would put anonymous but I think people are starting to learn my name on here. LOL)

Someone tell her what the post was that we need to go by to keep a total of how many roses we ACTUALLY have. She will get a kick out of it. I have worked outside for two days straight and can't think of the name of it. Judy

Judy...I think I actually saw that post not too long ago! It did make me laugh! I'm only up to 14 roses with plans of buying 3 more as soon as possible. I'm so envious of those that have the space and sun for 60, 70+ roses! I even asked my husband if we could cut down our ugly silver leaf maple tree today to create more sun! Had he said yes I could extend my rose bed another 6 feet which would allow me 2 more roses!! He said no. I even tried to convince him the tree was dying hoping he would believe me since he's not a gardner at all, but he didn't.

Aggie -- Early on in things we built a "Hybrid Tea Bed."
Very pretty bed. Most formal bed we've got, bordered by lovely smooth river rock.

The roses have ploughed along, out of that bed and beyond, and take over areas we never thought would be rosey. :-)

Maybe you need to sabotage that tree. In a real sneaky kinda way so he won't have a clue. Then one day when it starts dieing he will have to cut it down. Maybe you can find another spot say in the very middle of your backyard like you said and maybe he will change his mind about that dang ol tree. LOL!! Good luck and where theres a will theres a way. I only had about 10 roses when I found this forum. I didn't know what the white powdery stuff was and I made the mistake of cutting off all the blooms on another rose that was covered in aphids... (dumb!)

6 years later I've had up to 300 hundred roses, I've taken thousands of pictures and I'm a consulting rosarian...

I completely blame this forum for my obsession...

Whatever you do, do not submit to pot mania. If you can't place a rose in the ground do NOT put it in a pot. Do not realize that in your area roses overwinter outside in pots just fine (so you don't even have to limit your buying to those that will fit into the garage over winter). When you become one of the "pot people" you are sunk.

Aggie, a nice raised bed, with tiers maybe, would be really lovely in that backyard. Make sure it's good and big too! And don't forget a path or some stepping stones so you can get into it to cut roses, prune, spray, etc. Are there any utility lines around that maple? Maybe you could have them come out and take it down because it's interfering with the lines.

I started out with the remnants of my Mom's roses. She'd been past caring for them for some time and they had dwindled down to only a handful of the more than 100 she had at one time. I think there were 9 left. That was 5 years ago and I have 90 this spring.

I completely understand. I've become a regular at Northaven and am on a first name basis with a few of the sales clerks and nursery consultants. I picked up Lunar Mist and Pinata (both climbers) and a couple of Christmas roses. It's peanut butter sandwiches and baked beans next week...I'm broke!

By the way, the Calloways on Preston Road in Plano has quite a few PJPII. What incredibly beautiful upright perfect blooms! I just couldn't bring myself to pay $30 for a rose.

Good luck with the rose addiction. You may think you're over it by the end of the summer, but it strikes fast and hard every Spring. Never fails... :)

Aggie; You are hooked on them now,and no way out of it.My husband planted 7 roses about 30 yrs ago.I didn't know nothing about roses and wasn't interested in learning about them either.He passed away 10 years ago,and 8 yrs ago a friend bought a Mr Lincoln and came and planted it for me,and then took me to the American Rose Society Rose gardens and I seen all them roses there,100's of them,and after that I wanted almost every rose I seen.Course,Finances don't permit that,but over the years I have got 130 roses now,anf there is still some more I want.At least its a addition that makes the yard look pretty.

I am Trish and I am a rose potaholic. I don't have a spot to grow them in the ground and I have taken up all the available spots at my parents'. Being English and Welsh respectively they have an innate love for roses so that is good.
I started my rose obsession through tragedy. Our son was stillborn in the fall of 2006 (sorry to those who have heard this already) and being already into gardening in general I thought it would be nice to have something growing in his memory. I debated a tattoo but was too broke and could not find the 'perfect' image.
I did a bit of research on "the language of flowers" and came across the white rose. I asked on gardenweb for recommendations for a nice white rose as some of you will remember. I ended up deciding on Madame Hardy but by then I was a goner anyway. Now I have used up all available space at my parents' and a few pots outside and still eyeing up more. Face it, we're sunk Aggierose.

Addiction? That might be too gentle of a word for what I am suffering.

I am pretty much out of room so this Spring...along with the roses I ordered...I ordered every rose book available on Amazon.

Now, I am taking over my moms yard. I mean she is getting up in age and really...does she need to mow all that grass? She has a lot of land so I can try the house eaters that I never had room for.
