This Louise Clements is still in dormancy

Hello all,

I have this own-root Louise Clements planted last fall and it seems it is still in dormancy. It has no leaves but canes are still green.

Is this normal for Louise Clements? Is it sick or dying?

Good to hear from you, being reminded of your Rose Rosette Disease horrors of last year, and what you had to endure...yet you are still in roses speaks well of your sticktoitiveness.

I do not think your Louise Clements is alive at all. By now it should have at least pushed up some basal growth. I would very carefully, by hand, pull back the mulch and soil around the bush's crown and look for signs of growth, then report back here with photos of what you discovered. Again, good to hear from you.

Unfortunately nothing lasts forever as Hoovb says. However, you can get quite a good run out of roses in pots. Personally I'm going more and more to pots because they are easier to take care of in my situation. It's best to start out with a pot size appropriate to the size of the rose at hand, and then gradually increase the pot size as the rose grows. Depending on the size rose you buy, that can be anywhere from a 6-8 inch pot for an own root cutting of Louise Clements (that's how Heirloom roses sells this variety which is their own hybrid)to a 12 inch pot for a fully grown rose from the nursery.....When is it time to repot?... A small pot like an 8,10 or 12 inch pot, can be slightly tipped up to see if the roots are coming through the drainage holes. If they are it's time to increase the size of the pot by one increment (8 inch to 10 inch, 10 inch to 12 inch etc.). The maximum size pot I use is 24 inches. A larger variety of rose (Mr. Lincoln comes to mind) may need a bigger pot. In that case I simply don't grow that variety of rose. From what I've read about Louise Clements it should be fine up to the 24 inch mark (or maybe less). A quality potting mix with good drainage (add perlite if in doubt)is essential. No real dirt allowed. 6 month Osmocote with trace elements, supplimented by a 1/2 strength solution of Miracle gro for Roses (or Miracid - either one) about once or twice a month (depending on how frequently you water) and you should be set in the fertilizer department. I've had one rose (Tamora) in a container outside since 1991, so it is quite doable.......Maryl

ROBERT CLEMENTS is one of my favorites of the Heirloom roses. He grows tall, to a good 4Â½-5 ft, and blooms really well. The only thing I don't particularly like is the fact that the stems are kinda thin and the blooms often tend to nod. But they're just so beautiful that it doesn't matter. It is a shrub rose after all, not a hybrid tea, altho the bloom form is very much like one. Another really good one is DESIREE. She's on the apricot side, often with some pinkish tones. She grows shorter than RC, but has more upright blooms and repeats pretty well.

'Star of the Nile'-this was my favorite rose 2 houses ago when I grew around 500 different roses. No disease problems at all. I really liked the vigorous yet compact habit (around 3.5 ft x 3.5 feet)and the complex color, with various shades of pink, orange and hints of violet. Excellent fragrance-I don't remember that it faded with time. I just bought one when I was up in Oregon. I hope it does as well at my new home as it did in a previous one. 'Louise Clement'- this plant was a 4 ft x 4 ft bushy shrub. It has a very appealing shade of orange, sometimes drifiting towards coral. The flowers are around 4 inches across with a fairly high petal count. I had it for at least 5 years 2 homes ago, and I just planted 2 of them at my new home. 'Joan Fontaine'. Another Clements rose that I had 2 houses ago. I remembered that I preferred it to the 2 white Austin roses that I had at that time, Fair Bianca and Glamis Castle. The flowers were around 4 inches across and had a high petal count. Healthier than the 2 white Austins that I had at that time. 'The Impressionist'. An outstanding climbing rose that was spectacular in both the Portland Rose Garden and at the Heirloom Rose facility in Oregon. The flowers are large (5 inches) and can be of varying shades of yellow, pink, and orange. Strong fragrance and healthy foliage. I just picked up this rose and another in the 'Impressionist' line, Apricot Impressionist (perhaps a color sport?). Because Clements roses have performed well in my garden, I also picked up Tranquity (blush pink), Memories (pink) and Safari (orange, pink) when they were on sale late this summer.

Funny thing about Louise Clements and Augusta Luise. Seeing both mentioned here together makes me want to tell my story. I hope you don't mind. I've wanted Augusta Luise since the day I laid eyes on Diane's. I mean desperately wanted, and still do. About 2 years ago, I was in the hospital for a week or so, and had some sort of pain medication in my IV. I was looking at Heirloom Roses site, and there was Louise Clements. I was SO excited!! I couldn't believe it!! I had been looking everywhere and all of a sudden Heirloom Roses was selling my impossible to find rose! I quickly ordered and drifted off to sleep. A week or two later a box arrived. Oh, yes! I had a vague recollection of ordering Augusta Luise. I open the box. I find Louise Clements. I'm so disgusted with myself, I can hardly stand to look at it. Later, I get caught up on my emails and discover that I did indeed order Louise Clements. First, I left LC in her band container for months, and I'm talking MANY months. I did water LC, but that's it. After about 4-5? months I admitted the story on either this forum or the Antique Roses forum. I think I asked something vague, like "How long can a rose stay in its band container, and still be ok?" I was encouraged to give Louise Clements a chance, and I finally potted her up. She bloomed and grew. I'm not a fan of orange roses in the first place, and I had some particularly unpleasant associations with her due to my "Louise Clements vs. Augusta Luise incident." I tried to love her, I really did. But all I could think of was how she should have been Augusta Luise, and that I should have never ordered anything in that condition. I kept her in a pot, and began asking nearby family and friends to take her. I had no takers. In February of this year, I had an 80 foot long hedge of Texas Privet removed from my backyard. I had set a row of potted roses, in order, nearby ready for that new space. It was a big job and I also had a few other things done, so the man was there for nearly a week. He was a very helpful guy, and did a great job. The plan was for him to dig the holes for the roses, and I would plant them later. On one of his last afternoons here, I went inside to rest for a bit. When I came back outside, the nice fellow had planted my roses for me! It was so sweet of him. Then I noticed something odd. There was an extra rose planted in the bed. You guessed it, Louise Clements!!!! I couldn't believe my eyes. When I asked about it, he explained that he thought it needed just one more rose. Louise was clear on the other side of the house, and there were so many others he could have chosen. He said he found the most beautiful rose I had, and planted it with the others. With the language difficulty and his incredible helpfulness, I didn't have the heart to do anything but thank him graciously. I tried again to love her, even like her, but I couldn't even tolerate her. She's back in a pot, and will be barerooted to be sent to another forum member when the weather cools down. She's really a nice rose. She's just a tad too orange for me, and I never could get past the whole "Augusta Luise situation." Lisa

Glad to be back. I still many roses in my garden. As of now, there is more infected roses with RRD, but it is still too early.

It is strange that this rose has died. We didn't have a harsh winter last season and all own-root roses started to have grow leaves.

It is still under warranty through Heirloom. I will submit a claim in this case.

Louise Clements is out of stock at Heirloom right now, Omar. I do not know what next steps you will take, but whatever you do as far as a replacement rose goes, please make sure it is black spot resistant/proof. That will make life much easier for you.

The German rose breeder Kordes sells an excellent line of very hardy healthy roses. They are designated so by the ADR abbreviation which they receive if they pass rigorous trials in many test gardens throughout Germany. Not all Kordes roses pass the test, so they cannot be awarded the ADR recognition. Just a select number of Kordes roses pass the ADR trials. Other rose breeders enter their roses in the ADR trial, big rose breeders like Meilland, Noak, Tantau.....are also awarded ADR on their roses that successfully pass the trials.

Look for the ADR award printed somewhere on the tag of a rose for sale at a nursery. Ask if the rose has been awarded this high standard before you buy it.

I noticed it is out of stock but they will probably give me a store credit or refund.

Any suggestions for shrub rose that is very fragrant and black spot resistant?

I recommend Earth Angel as a replacement from Heirloom, if that's what you want instead of a refund. It's listed as in stock. Very fragrant, ADR winner, spotless foliage, however the blooms can get stuck opening up in wet weather...still a great rose. I've had mine about 7 years...it was slow establishing, but very worthwhile.

Another recommendation is Bliss Parfuma, ADR winner, moderate fragrance, foliage is black spot free, and also in stock at Heirloom now. These roses, although not ADR winners, should be, they are: Quietness, Pinkerbelle, and South Africa.

My roses here 5-6 hours away from you broke dormancy early to mid March...hummmm...Best of luck Omar.... I like to plant Heirloom roses in May instead of the fall...

@Moses, Pittsburgh, W. PA., zone 5/6, USA Heirloom approved a store credit. I will look at Earth Angel but I don't want something that takes years to bloom. Many of their roses are currently out of stocks.

@jim1961 / Central Pennsylvania / Zone 6 Heirloom had a discount last August, so I bought 6 roses. They all broke dormancy except Louise Clements but I agree with Moses. I think it is dead already. I am looking for a new replacement.

Only one rose I would like to buy from Heirloom is Impressionist. May be some day, not this season.
